Environment Lethbridge is looking for artists and crafters to participate in their first Art and Craft Supply Swap on Feb. 15.

The event is a two-part event, where anyone in the community who has extra art and craft supplies can drop them off on Feb. 14, and come back on Feb. 15, to find something else new-to-them from 12 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room at Casa.

Executive Director of Environment Lethbridge Kathleen Sheppard says every crafter she knows has extra supplies of one sort or another.

“Rather than having them sit unused, this is an opportunity to pass them on to someone else and to find gently-used supplies for a new project,” says Sheppard.

She says that by helping artists clean out their closets and studios, The Art and Craft Supply Swap will give items a new home and keep them out of the landfill.

“We’re looking for ideas on how we can help people keep good items from going into the garbage and into the landfill. And we know that lots of people out there have different arts and craft supplies that they may not be using anymore,” says Sheppard.

Therefore, says Sheppard they wanted to provide an opportunity for people to pass those items along to someone who can use them.

“Some of those items are toxic and should not be going in your garbage, so that makes them harder to dispose of and this is a way they can be used up instead of being thrown away,” says Sheppard.

Environment Lethbridge is inviting residents to drop off their items at Casa on Feb. 14 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. where they will receive a voucher for free admission on Feb. 15.

“Those who don’t have items to donate are welcome to attend on Sunday and can take as many items as they like for a $5 admission fee,” says Sheppard. “Teachers are welcome to attend the final hour of the swap for free.”

She explains that any type of art and craft supply is welcome, from yarn and fabric to paint and drawing materials or beads and jewelry making.

“If you’re not using it, we’ll see if we can find it a new home,” says Sheppard.

To do that, Sheppard says they need volunteers to help them organize the items once they are dropped off, as well as other activities during the event.

“On the Sunday (Feb.15), we’re looking for people at the welcome table and on the floor to keep things tidy as well,” says Sheppard.
