Nearly 50 students in the Multimedia Production (MMP) and Digital Communications and Media (DCM) programs of Lethbridge Polytechnic had an immersive opportunity to create websites, logos along with social media and marketing strategies for a real-life client at the 11th annual Tecconnect Challenge held last week.
This challenge required the students to work in teams of eight to create the assets in only five-hours and create a live presentation for the client and a panel of experts.
Martina Emard, instructor for both programs says this tight time limit is a challenge for even experts in industry.
“For professionals to do that within five hours, isn’t really common especially since they’d only met each other three weeks ago.”
She adds, while both of these programs occupy the third floor, they don’t often work together, so this gave them a great opportunity to work together and make connections.
“It’s a great opportunity for them to meet other students and expand their professional networks as well, for when they graduate.”
This year, the client was Roberta Mistaken Chief, alumnus of the Culinary and Entrepreneurship programs at Lethbridge Polytechnic, who created a food truck called Nisitapi Eats and Treats.
One student, Patience Omeruo, says she was quite nervous the night before the event, but it was a great learning experience, even if it was hectic.
“I learned time-management, collaboration, which was key working with my team.”
She adds that she felt a lot of pressure to deliver a good pitch and five hours was not a lot of time to create a pitch, but overall, it was a great experience to be a part of.
The Tecconnect winning team from the competition won a small prize from Economic Development Lethbridge.
