Mayor Blaine Hyggen put forward a motion at Tuesday’s city council meeting to declare April 7th as Green Shirt Day once again, that passed unanimously.
Hyggen said he wants to keep bringing this item to council annually, rather than as a one-time declaration, to continually highlight Logan Boulet’s impact and the importance of talking to family about becoming an organ donor.
On Jan. 11, 1999, city council passed a resolution stating the Mayor’s Office would discontinue the long-standing practice of issuing proclamations to avoid endorsements for a cause or program that would result in controversy in the community.
Lethbridge city council has declared April 7th as Green Shirt Day every year since 2019 by requesting an exception to that resolution.
“I’m happy to see it’s unanimous once again, and I can’t see why it would not be, but it’s great to be able to see that,” said Hyggen.
He added that he is pleased that his colleagues on city council have supported his resolutions throughout the years.
“First in 2019 to rename Adams Park Ice Centre to Logan Boulet Arena, then each year since 2021 to declare April 7 as Green Shirt Day,” says Mayor Hyggen.
He said Green Shirt Day was created to honour, remember and recognize all the victims and families of the fatal crash and to continue Logan’s legacy by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors.
“Logan Boulet saved lives and his inspiring legacy will continue to save lives. I commend his parents, Toby and Bernie, and sister Mariko, for continuing efforts to promote Green Shirt Day.”
He said that even though the Boulets live here in Lethbridge, the impact of their continued efforts to promote Green Shirt Day are felt across the country.
“I never know where Toby and Bernie are. They’re all over the place talking about this important cause,” said Hyggen.
