OTTAWA – Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc says he will not run for the Liberal party leadership.
The New Brunswick MP says in a statement that Canada is at “a critical juncture in its relationship with its most important ally and trading partner, the United States.”
As a result, LeBlanc says he will keep his full attention on making the case against the “unjust application” of tariffs on Canadian businesses.
Incoming U.S. president Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico later this month.
Trump has also ramped up his rhetoric in recent days with threats to use “economic force” to annex Canada and make it the 51st state.
LeBlanc has travelled to Florida twice since Trump won the U.S. election in November to meet with the president-elect and key members of his team.
