Carney promises home building program, Poilievre pitches national energy corridor

By Canadian Press on March 31, 2025.

OTTAWA — Liberal Leader Mark Carney promised Monday to get the federal government back into the business of home building, while Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives pitched a national energy corridor to fast-track approval of key infrastructure.

The two rival party leaders touted the plans as national projects to stand up to the United States as it menaces Canada’s economy with a steady stream of fresh tariffs.

Canadians head to the polls in a general election on April 28.

The Liberals propose doubling the pace of construction to almost 500,000 new homes a year, unleashing the power of public-private co-operation on a scale not seen since the end of the Second World War.

The government would create a new entity, Build Canada Homes, to act as a developer on new housing projects and provide more than $25 billion in financing to innovative builders of prefabricated homes in Canada.

At a campaign stop in Vaughan, Ont., Carney said the new approach aimed to “build faster, build smarter and to build more affordably.”

The Conservatives’ planned national energy corridor would expedite approval of transmission lines, railways, pipelines and other critical infrastructure.

Canada needs big projects that link its regions, east to west, as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens Canada with tariffs, Poilievre said at an event in Saint John, N.B.

“We need to be able to get our resources across Canada, bypassing America, so we can trade more with each other and sell our resources to the world,” he said.

Eyes are turning to Wednesday when Trump is likely to slap “reciprocal tariffs” on countries including Canada over various alleged trade practices.

Carney has stressed the need for Canada to fundamentally reimagine its economy in response to Trump’s levies and threats of annexation.

“We are facing the biggest crisis of our lifetimes, and we are going to build our way out of it,” Carney said Monday.

Poilievre has campaigned on a need for change, warning that Canadians can ill afford to re-elect the Liberals after almost 10 years at the helm.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was set to start the day in Victoria before travelling to Edmonton.

Say What . . .

The Liberals have a long history of promising the moon, sun and stars to all of the suckers who believe election promises and the young people are easily brainwashed these days and easily misled and they will soon see how putting the Liberals back into government will allow Carney to complete what Trudeau started, a Net Zero plan that will further bankrupt our country and allow other nations to take advantage of us!
Looking at that polls it appears inevitable the Liberals will win this federal election and proves that people just do not take the time to research the past or look at the damages done. You would think that almost doubling our National Debt from $750 billion to almost $1.3 trillion in just a few years would wake them up, since at no time in Canada’s history have we seen such an extreme increase in such a short time. That and the fact that killing our oil and gas industry will impact all of Canada, with no viable industry in place to replace the lost GDP! This when the biggest emitters refuse to reduce their emissions and scientists are now flip-flopping back to say reducing the emissions will have little impact, which many of us were aware, since many of the changes are from solar flare activity hitting the earth and natural changes in climate that have occurred since the earth was born! It is just another scheme by billionaires to gain power and wealth!
There is a reason the federal NDP has lost so much support, and it ws because they propped up the Liberal government as they killed our economy and our international relationships, yet people are willing to put in place another Liberal government, a Trudeau 2.0 government under Carney (or I should say a Chretien 2.0 government since Chretien was one of the main reason Carney was put in that chair) and continue the devastating destruction of a once great nation!
Our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are the ones who will pay!

People just don’t care about tomorrow or the consequences and choose to follow online media rather than taking the time to actually think for themselves.
BOHICA . . . Canada is on its way towards a third world country economy!
Carney is pro NetZero and he doesn’t recognize Canada only emits 1.6% of the world GHG’s while China, over 34%. China, Russia and India emit over 50% of the world GHG’s and they refuse to reduce emissions. So common sense can tell you that at the very best, Canada can only bring down its world GHG’s to about 1% to 1.2% which is not even a drop in a barrel so to speak. There is a master plan at play here and it isn’t enviromental concerns!
I agree with you . . . people are going to be stupid enough to put the Liberals, the same people, just a different leader in place, to continue their efforts, only they brought in the NetZero Czar himself, Mr. Carney to complete the task!
As time has passed it has been proven that solar energy, wind generated energy and EV’s all have a larger carbon footprint than fossil fuels/fossil fuel vehicles . . . so why, with this knowledge are they promoted the change??
In 4 years many will realize they put the Liberals in by mistake, but by that time the extra damage will be done!
Canada used to be the best country in the world!! After just 10 years of Liberals, even many refugees left Canada for a better country . . . what does that tell you??
I would say wake up, but I know it would fall on deaf ears . . . luckily I am retired and have lived a good life, but for the young people, they will be facing hard times and maybe even world war III which we show them how bad things were for our parents and grandparents in world wars I and II . . . sad way to learn!
