Chiefs tell King Charles to remember his treaty obligations as he visits Ottawa

By Canadian Press on May 26, 2025.

OTTAWA — Dozens of First Nations leaders from across the country gathered in front of Parliament Hill today with a message for the King as he arrives in the city — respect your treaty partners.

The leaders say they also want the federal Liberals to take action on reforming the child welfare system, protecting traditional lands and building infrastructure desperately needed in Indigenous communities.

King Charles and Queen Camilla touched down in Ottawa today to begin their first visit to Canada since the King’s coronation two years ago.

Parliament also opened and MPs voted to elect the new Speaker of the House of Commons.

Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Vice Chief David Pratt says King Charles, and in turn Canada, should uphold and respect the treaty relationship they began with his ancestors.

He says the relationship between First Nations and the Crown was not intended to be one-sided and that the Crown should not be dictating to them on how to live their lives.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 26, 2025.

Okay, you opened the door by your statements and living in a free society, I am expressing my thoughts.
We as a society all have to follow rules which are there to respect one another, not dictate! Many areas have been changed to giver special treatment to First Nations, whether it is the courts, where smudge ceremonies have been incorporated, as in jails or changes in sentencing First Nations, for example the Gladue Principal. We have been dictated by you per say, and made changes, in an effort to accomodate concerns.
I am fine with respecting treaties and stand with our First Nations when those treaties are not upheld. But lets look closely at those treaties and see that many of them land was ceded in those treaties which no some Chiefs state were not! Treaties were signed and agreed on and no one alive was there when they were signed, not one person!
Many mistakes have been made on both sides and we have attempted in a multitude of ways to compensate First Nations, with billion dollar payouts, land agreements and recognition of errors, while the First Nations have never admitted them did anything wrong and it was all our fault for their issues they suffer from.
I even see they want back artifacts the Hudson’s Bay owned from their days of trading with the early Indians, artifacts which were not stolen, but fairly traded. Another one sided part along with the agreed land treaties which are not being disputed.
There was a term which came about from those days about demanding things back which were given, which I will not bring up, but it appears that it is the First Nations who are reneging on agreements and treaties now.
You will never bring change unless you forgive and forget the past and move forward, focusing on the future and not the past! Reconciliation is not putting a gun to someone’s head and saying you owe us!
We are getting tired of being blamed for all of your problems and have paid hundreds of billions over the years supporting you and every year you receive over $25 billion in supports from federal and provincial governments to support you.
No other First Nations in this world gets the financial supports and social supports you receive! Both parties made mistakes when the treaties were signed and later, and you have so many supports available to succeed but keep getting dragged down by living in the past and blaming everyone else.
For the sake of your people, please focus on your families, homes and communities to build them up, and end the cycle so you can appreciate what you have and enjoy life more!

I was planning a surprise for my sister in Vietnam and wanted to send her some money from the UK. I needed something secure and fast. I came across send money from uk to vietnam and it worked like a charm. The site is user friendly and even has a handy calculator for exchange rates. Personally I found it reliable and the quick transfer really saved the day for her gift.
