Steel producers call on Carney to match Trump’s tariffs

OTTAWA — Canada’s steel industry is calling on the federal government to match U.S. President Donald Trump’s 50 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Canadian Steel Producers Association CEO Catherine Cobden says Trump’s tariffs are delivering a crushing blow to the Canadian steel industry.

She says steel companies and union members will be in Ottawa tomorrow to urge federal cabinet ministers to immediately retaliate.

She says Trump’s tariffs are so steep they have effectively closed the U.S. market to Canadian steel.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier today he is not yet ready to decide on retaliation, and Industry Minister Melanie Joly says the government is currently reviewing multiple scenarios.

Trump, who signed an executive order Tuesday that doubles his levies on steel and aluminum, claims this measure will protect U.S. national security and domestic industries.
