Air Force 1 has taken off from the Calgary airport, after U.S. President Donald Trump spent one day at the G7 leaders’ summit in Kananaskis, Alta.
Trump told reporters during a group photo that it had been a good meeting, but he had to return to Washington as soon as possible because of the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Just before his plane left, he posted on social media that he was not going back to Washington to work on a cease fire between Israel and Iran and said it’s “much bigger than that.”
Trump and Carney met one-on-one early in the day, as the two nations continue to hammer out a new economic and security partnership.
A formal recounting of that meeting by the Canadian government says the two leaders agreed to a mid-July deadline to reach a deal.
Carney says he was grateful for Trump’s presence but understands why the president had to leave before the summit wraps on Tuesday.
More coming.
