Champagne tries to sell Europe on Canadian energy, critical mineral exports

By Canadian Press on September 20, 2025.

OTTAWA — Canada’s finance minister says the country could be a “supplier of choice” for European markets looking to bolster energy security and defence capabilities.

François-Philippe Champagne says Canadian critical mineral and energy exports could help European economies become more resilient while diversifying Canada’s trade relationships.

He spoke to reporters this morning from Copenhagen following a meeting of European Union economy and finance ministers.

Champagne says the world economic order is being reshaped and it would be “prudent” for Canada to diversify its export markets.

He says Canadian critical minerals could be vital for everything from the aerospace sector to the auto and defence industries.

Canada and Mexico signed a pact earlier this week to deepen economic and security ties ahead of what is expected to be a challenging round of negotiations with the United States on a trilateral trade deal.
