Prime Minister Carney says next 48 hours will be ‘crucial’ to Gaza peace process

By Canadian Press on October 9, 2025.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is urging all parties involved in the U.S.-backed Gaza peace plan to follow through, and Ottawa is looking at how it can support efforts to end the conflict.

“The next 48 hours are crucial,” Carney told reporters Thursday morning on Parliament Hill, ahead of a cabinet meeting.

“We’re encouraged, but it’s the first phase and there’s more to come.”

Israel and Hamas say they have agreed to the first phase of a plan that would pause the fighting and see Hamas release the 20 living hostages while Israel pulls troops back to an agreed-upon line.

The pause in the fighting is meant to lead to a phased end to the war. Details of the medium and long-term plan are still under discussion.

Carney thanked U.S. President Donald Trump, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey for their work to orchestrate the deal, and urged Israel and “particularly Hamas” to follow through by releasing all hostages, including the deceased.

“The president and I discussed in the White House how Canada can support this process,” Carney said, referring to his Tuesday visit to Washington.

“We are supporting with humanitarian aid. There are other mechanisms that we can do to support it.”

In a statement on X, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand called for the immediate and unimpeded resumption of humanitarian aid in the besieged territory.

“Canada will support all efforts to turn this positive step into lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians,” she wrote.

Global Affairs Canada officials told the Senate foreign affairs committee on Wednesday that it’s too soon to say whether Canada will be part of an armed mission to secure a ceasefire or truce in the Gaza Strip.

Stefanie McCollum, a director with the department’s Middle East bureau, noted talks continue on setting up an international stabilization force and an apolitical transitional government led by Palestinian technocrats.

“Canada is in active discussions right now to see how Canada will be able to support such initiatives. I can’t speak to whether that will entail a deployment or not,” McCollum told senators.

“I don’t want to presume what the decisions will be. I can say (that) we are actively speaking to our partners, so that if these negotiations are successful, if there is broad agreement to this plan, Canada will be ready to speak to how we can support it.”

Carney said last month that he was aware of calls for some sort of stabilization force involving European and Arab governments. He said Ottawa is looking at how it might contribute to those efforts.

Canada has in recent times supported stabilization efforts globally without putting boots on the ground.

In Haiti, Canada is facilitating a mission to rout heavily armed gangs, primarily through assessing local security services’ equipment gaps and helping supporting nations provide interchangeable gear. Ottawa also has helped to deploy surveillance planes in Haiti.

Tara Carney, acting director of humanitarian issues, said Canadian aid is ready to be deployed into the Gaza Strip by the United Nations, the Red Cross and other charities.

“There are millions of dollars worth of pre-positioned supplies, including food, water and medicine, awaiting clearances at border crossings,” she testified Wednesday alongside McCollum.

“Canada’s … partners have the capacity to rapidly scale up, when conditions allow.”

War is not pretty, and when not stopped in the early stages, only causes more death and devastation.
There used to be an organization which was put in place to prevent such conflicts and to prevent strife from rising up as we see in Haiti . . . an organization which promised “to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation in solving global problems, and promote respect for human rights” . . . that organization was the United Nations!
How are they doing? They have failed completely and Haiti is one very good example where other arms of the UN failed after the 2010 earthquake, where billions of international dollars should have rebuilt infrastructure and supplied housing for Haitians, yet 11 years later, when another eathquake devastated Haiti, most were still in tents/makeshift huts surrounded by sewage and garbage. Is there any wonder they revolted and chaos took over!
The UN continuously have failed in their mandates in many areas to the point the we now face another world war! The UN was supposed to prevent conflicts, but as you can see beginning with Rwanda, then Somalia, the former Yugoslavia, Syria, Sudan, Congo, the Middle East . . . they are useless! They now are controlled by China, Russia and the Arab League and many of their actions are anti-West and anti-semetic, but people have not being paying attention. They have focused on weakening the West and aligned with the World Economic Forum, are pushing hard with their globalist policies to do so! That would take too long to explain!
The Gaza-Israeli war would have ended several months ago if the EU, the Biden government and Canada would have not supported the Palestinians and turned against the only democratic country in the region, Israel, binding their hands.
This should be a wake-up call to free societies such as Canada!
When we chose to support terrorists, who have written in their Charter the destruction of Israel and annihilation of all Jews, who fund protests on our streets and universities, which call for genocide of Jews and death to Canada and we do nothing . . . we have to ask ourselves, why we support the terrorists and condemn a people who are Indigenous to the Middle East, the Israelis, and are not occupiers of the land . . . Why?
Do we now exchange good for evil and call evil good? How can we trust a government to lead in such uncertain times, when they cannot discern between terrorists and a people just trying to survive attacks from all sides, by terrorists funded by Iran and Qatar?
There is a reason why Egypt enforced the wall between Gaza and Egypt, and put up razor wire after the war began . . . why other Arab countries will not take in people from Gaza! They have been radicalized for 20 years by the same people, the Muslim Brotherhood who almost brought down Egypt in the Arab Spring revolution in 2011.
The children have been indoctrinated from 5 years old in UNRWA schools to kill Jews and that Jews are occupiers, for over 20 years, and many Hamas fighters and terrorists came from those as they aged! Women and children were trained and at one point there was brigade of women fighters.
To support the atrocities of October 7th by supporting Hamas shows how far we as a society have lost the meaning of ‘humanity’!
When Middle Eastern born doctors who live in Canada, but go to work in Gaza in hospitals which Hamas has operatives crawling within, in hospitals that have massive underground bases which they supply electricty for Hamas, and Hamas oversees the Gaza Health Authority, and those doctors return to Canada and tell Canadians that Hamas is not in the hospitals and it is all Israelis lies . . . you have to ask yourselves why you would support terrorists and not believe the truth! Hamas oversees the Gaza Health Authority and inflated deaths which come from the Gaza Health Authority has been disputed by the UN and even some Hamas members admitted they inflated the statistics to gain international support!
Media would not act professionally and report the truth . . . but they would take the Hamas fed disinformation and spread it to make money!
Media showed its true colours! They would prefer spreading propaganda for a terrorist organization, rather then report the truth. The Associated Press in Gaza was found to have some of the Hamas leadership working for them and the AP had to report what Hamas released or lose access to Gaza. So what happened to good journalism?
It all helped prolong the war and prolong the suffering!
We as a society need to reflect on what our values are . . . what ever happened to such a great country . . . why we have chose to support terrorism and allow hate and demands for genocide to be allowed on our streets . . . we need to define what is free speech!
We need to meditate deeply why we have allowed terrorist support in our government!
