Prime Minister Mark Carney says he plans to meet with Chinese leader at APEC

KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Mark Carney says he plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week.

Carney says the pair will have a discussion at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum later this week in South Korea.

It will mark the first time the leaders of the two countries have met in several years, and a significant thawing in relations.

Premiers and business leaders in Canada have been urging Carney to meet with Xi in an effort to ease the current trade dispute.

China has imposed damaging tariffs on Canadian canola, seafood and agriculture products in retaliation for Canada’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and batteries.

Carney is in the middle of his first trip to Asia as prime minister, where he’s seeking expanded trade and new trading partners.
