GYEONGJU — Prime Minister Mark Carney has wrapped up his first official visit to Asia after attending two major summits and meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The prime minister arrived in Asia last week with a plan to pitch Canada as a reliable trading partner and to try to encourage investment into nation-building projects at home.
After meetings with the leaders of both countries, Carney says Canada aims to conclude free trade deals with Thailand and the Philippines, along with the wider ASEAN bloc, within a year.
The government will introduce its first budget on Tuesday, a spending plan that Carney says is meant to make the economy more resilient to trade shocks.
But the Liberals will have to get the support of opposition members of Parliament in order to pass in the minority House of Commons.
Carney wouldn’t say whether he’s confident the budget will pass, instead telling reporters he’s confident it’s the right budget.
