OTTAWA — Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux has crossed the floor from the Conservative party to join the Liberal caucus.
Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on social media this morning, saying he is honoured to welcome Jeneroux as the newest member of the Liberal caucus.
Jeneroux suddenly announced plans to resign in November, just days after Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont left the Conservative caucus to join the Liberals.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said at the time that Jeneroux planned to step down as a member of Parliament in the spring.
But Jeneroux says in a statement on his social media today that he changed his mind after talking with his family and that the moment demands “steady leadership” for the country.
The Liberals remain several seats shy of a majority government; they recently lost MPs through the resignations of Chrystia Freeland and Bill Blair, and a court ruling that overturned a Quebec riding result from last spring’s election.
