CP NewsAlert: Carney meets with Indian PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi

By Canadian Press on March 1, 2026.

DELHI — Prime Minister Mark Carney is meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today.

The meeting was happening as the Globe and Mail reported Sunday evening about the role Indian consular staff allegedly played in the murder of a Canadian Sikh activist three years ago.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an advocate for an independent Sikh homeland and president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, was killed in Surrey, B.C., in June 2023.

The Globe and Mail cited two anonymous sources who said consular staff in Vancouver were involved by providing information to help with the killing.

Carney landed in India on Friday, the first visit by a Canadian prime minister since diplomatic relations disintegrated two years ago, after then prime minister Justin Trudeau accused agents of the Indian government of being involved in Nijjar’s killing.

Carney has set out to repair the relationship, inviting Modi to the G7 summit Canada hosted last year.

Carney says Canada is aiming to sign a comprehensive free-trade agreement with India by the end of the year.

But the government has also been under pressure to clarify whether it believes India is still engaged in foreign interference.

After the allegations around Nijjar in 2023, in 2024, the RCMP said there was evidence of a wider campaign of intimidation and violence.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published March 2, 2026.
