WESLEY JACOB KUEHN
1919 ~ 2013
WESLEY JACOB KUEHN of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Woitte) Kuehn, passed away peacefully at Coaldale Health Centre, on July 18th, at the age of 94 years.
With the help of a kindly neighbor, Dr. Tenney, Wes was born on Mar. 5th, 1919, the youngest child of Frank and Louise (Jahn) Kuehn. He received his public schooling to grade nine, at Kessler School, finishing in Warner.
Farming was in his blood, so graduating from Olds School of Agriculture, and Garbutt Business College, at the tender age of 18, he was on his way to gaining the knowledge required. After a year back on the farm, with his Dad, and brother Herb, he attended Calgary Tech.
In February 1942; Wes married a local girl, Dorothy, daughter of George and Mae (Culler) Woitte.
While operating the farm seemed to consume his life, in 1950, he, together with Ed Lonsdale, built and operated the Warner Hotel, the building that still stands today. Wes served as a member of the Wrentham School board, director of District 14 of F.U.A., President and Drawmaster of the Wrentham Curling Club for many years, and founding Director and Chairman of the Sunshine Seed Plant. He was one of the organizers and Secretary of the Chin Lake Aqua Club, and recently received his 70 year member Pin of the Warner Elks Club. Wes wanted to fly, a Kuehn trait it seems, but due to limited vision in one eye, was denied his pilot’s license, so riding with brother Herb, or nephew Franklyn was the next best thing.
Wes found time to take his family for an annual trip to Waterton for 2-3 weeks, every summer, starting in the mid 50’s. Hiking to all the upper lakes, fishing, and numerous rounds of Golf, occupied their time there. Anyone brave enough to join him in the boat, for a cruise, was welcome.
With the boys getting old enough to operate the farm, Wes and Dorothy retired, and moved to Lethbridge in 1975. This allowed for summer trips to Campbell River and area, after the illusive Salmon. The entire family anticipated their return as Dorothy canned the Salmon, as Wes caught it, and it far exceeded the taste of store bought. They spent about 3.5 months in California each winter, staying in Lethbridge until after Christmas, as they both enjoyed curling.
Wes is survived by his 4 children, and their families; Pheona (Ed) Sloboda, Wendy (Keith) Routley, Jackie (Toby) Poncelet, all of Warner, Harold (Lorraine) Kuehn; Paula (Stewart) Whillans, Karie Kuehn of Lethbridge, Shonna (Mike) Hirney of Taber; Randy (Karen) Kuehn, of Warner , Amber (Chris) Pinchin of Bow Island, Krista (Quang) Le of Surrey, Talayna (Stan) Rickert of Cold Lake, Adon Kuehn of Lethbridge, Farley Kuehn of Warner, his older brother Herb Kuehn of Lethbridge; 17 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his loving wife, Dorothy, Wes was predeceased by his parents, sisters Hildegarde (Steve) Storfie, Florence, brother Harold, and recently his close nephew, Franklyn Kuehn
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 7pm and 9pm on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge.
The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, with Pastor Scott Currie officiating. A private family interment will be held in the Warner Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers those who wish can make a memorial donation to Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, 960 – 19 Street South, Lethbridge Alberta, T1J 1W5.
