GILLIES, DAVID “JERRY”

SAN DIEGO

David “Jerry” Gillies, age 86, born November 28, 1926 in Picture Butte, Alberta, died September 23, 2013 in San Diego, California, after a brief illness and surrounded by family members. Jerry is survived by his two loving sisters, Vida Thornsberry (Denver, Colorado) and Lorraine Harris (Edmonton, Alberta). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including Patricia (John) Thornsberry, Nancy Thornsberry, Linda Thornsberry, Kent Harris, Doug (Trudy) Harris, Jane (Wade) Hartley, Greg (Patricia) Harris, Gord (Janis) Harris, and Jeff (Jody) Harris, as well as their respective children. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Jack; his father and mother, David and Ellen Gillies; and his niece Carol Thornsberry. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada, Jerry emigrated to San Diego, eventually becoming chief estimator, executive vice president and co-owner of Riha Construction Co., where he flourished in a 60 year career. Jerry was a prominent fixture in the professional construction arena; his dry wit became legendary. He will be dearly missed by his Riha “family” of employees, including business partner, Ken Riha. Jerry bid on and was awarded an extensive list of Southern California Naval projects which includes the Submarine Firefighter Training Facility, the Shore Intermediate Maintenance Facility, and the Navy Underseas Facility. He successfully completed iconic and award- winning projects such as the Westgate Hotel, the waterfront Embarcadero along Harbor Drive in San Diego, Grossmont College, America’s Cup Harbor, Vandenberg Air Force Base Missile Assembly Building, Deodor Reservoir, The Anza-Borrego Visitors’ Center, San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center (a LEED -platinum project), La Mesa Trolley Station Tower and Pedestrian Bridge, San Diego Juvenile Hall, the seismic retrofit of the historic Balboa Theatre, and the challenging La Mesa EDCO Transfer and Recycling Center and Grossmont High School Humanities Building, Auto Shop and Tennis Courts. It was often remarked that, as a construction estimator, “Jerry forgot more than most other estimators knew.” He often engineered techniques for complex and challenging construction projects, often receiving awards, recognition and admiration within the industry. Jerry’s legacy is that he successfully bid many iconic San Diego landmarks that will last many years and be enjoyed and utilized by San Diegans.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Mission Bay Yacht Club, 1215 El Carmel Place, San Diego, California.
