1962 ~ BORLAND ~ 2014
With deep sadness, our family wishes to announce the sudden passing of Craig Borland on Friday, August 29th, 2014 at the age of 52 years. Craig was a beloved husband, dad, brother, uncle and friend. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Anita; children, Kimberly (Justin Congram) and Cameron; sisters, Carol Hauser (Russ), Patricia Smithdorf (Colin), and Terry Manery (Don); brothers, Scott Borland (Sharon) and Dale Miller (Maria); along with numerous nephews, nieces and in-laws. Craig was predeceased by his parents, William Borland and Shirley Miller; brother, Glen Borland; step-father, Gene Miller; step-brother, Alan Miller; and grandparents, Dora and Harvey Gowin. Craig was born in Calgary on January 25th, 1962 and spent his childhood years in Bow Island and Lethbridge. He met Anita while studying at Lethbridge College. They married on February 16th, 1991 and later moved to Medicine Hat where Craig was employed by Superstore for many years and then more recently at the Medicine Hat Exhibition Grounds. Craig was an avid golfer and loved to spend his free time in the summer on the links. He also had a passion for computers, either building his own or tinkering with their inner workings. Our lives on earth are measured in hours, days and years. A life well lived is not only measured by our accomplishments but also on what we have given to others. Craig, you have given us a lot by being who you are. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten. We would like to acknowledge and thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Angela (Angie) Schluchter, beloved wife of Bill Schluchter, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2014 at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge. Angie is survived by her husband Bill from Lethbridge, daughters Donna from Edmonton and Carla from Lethbridge; sisters Mona from Delta, BC, her twin Sr Marie Bitz from St. John, NB, and Gwen (Ken) Schmidt from North Vancouver, BC.
She was predeceased by her parents Frank Bitz and Angelina Bitz (nee Ell) and brother Charles in infancy. Angie was born at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina and was raised on a farm in the Holdfast, SK area, moved to Regina in 1959. On May 1, 1965, she and Bill Schluchter were united in marriage and Regina was their home until 2008 when they moved to Lethbridge, AB. Angie courageously battled a chronic illness (Scleroderma) throughout the majority of her life. Even with these struggles she found great enjoyment in reading, spending time with family and friends and especially loved all animals. BROOKS
RITA COMAI BROOKS, age 81, passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta. Rita is survived by her sister Wilma (Andy) Valer of Lethbridge, and her four children: Clint Dee Winton Brooks (Mary), of Daytona Beach, Florida, Rory Kelvin Brooks (Ruth) of Kelowna, BC, Wendy Laine Tolley (Warren) of Stockholm, Sweden, and Gregory LeRoy Brooks of Lethbridge. She has 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Rita was predeceased by her loving husband, Winton Earl Brooks in July 2007, whom she has sorely missed. Born in Lethbridge on July 23, 1933, Rita was the younger of two girls born to Alfredo and Olga Comai. She grew up in North Lethbridge and was very active in the Italian Canadian Community right up to her passing. Rita received her education in Lethbridge, and on March 10, 1951 she was married to Winton Brooks. She was happy as a devoted wife and mother as she partnered with her best friend Winton in raising their four children and in his teaching career in Lethbridge. Over the years they had several foster children in their home who were loved and cared for just like their own. As grandchildren arrived, they were famous for their devotion and individual attention to each of their new additions to the family. After retirement in 1983, Winton and Rita maintained an extremely active lifestyle, and spent their time involved in travelling in their motor home to visit the family that was scattered around the US and Canada. During that time they spent most of their winters being snowbirds in Arizona, where they became well known and loved in the Lake Havasu community.
Rita was known by everyone she met as a warm, friendly and loving person who lit up the room when she entered. She was very outgoing and made friends very easily. Her smile and sense of humor made her the life of any gathering. She was a talented homemaker with notable abilities in cooking, baking, sewing and home decorating. She loved to collect and display beautiful things. She was active in her church as a visiting teacher and as Relief Society President and spent endless hours serving and assisting others. Friends may greet the family on Sunday, September 7 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703-13 Street North, Lethbridge or prior to the funeral service on Monday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. BROWN
BILL “MAC” BROWN, beloved husband of Anne Brown, of Lethbridge, passed away at St. Michael’s Health Centre Palliative Care Unit after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the age of 87 years. Besides his loving wife Anne, Bill leaves behind his children; William (Hui) Brown of Esquimault, B.C., Fiona Brown (Brian Kinnee) and children Katrina and Stephanie Kinnee of Diamond City, AB and Elisabeth (David) Mayne and children Matthew and Justin Mayne of Winton, Queensland, Australia. He is also survived by his brother John Brown. Bill was predeceased by his parents and brothers George RAF 1940 and Robert. Bill was born and raised in Fife, Scotland, working and studying Horticulture before moving to Edinburgh and Birmingham to continue his studies.
He married Anne in 1956 and they immigrated to Canada in 1957 where he worked for the City of Edmonton Parks from 1957 to 1961. They moved to Lethbridge where he became the Superintendant of Parks and Recreation for the city from 1961 – 1987 and retired following the completion of the Urban Parks Project, where he was responsible for establishing the framework of Lethbridge’s renowned Urban Parks System. During his time in Lethbridge, he was a member of the Lethbridge Public School Board # 51 from 1970 to 1975. Bill was involved with the Royal Canadian Legion, the Southern Alberta Environmental Group, the Lethbridge Naturalist Society and Toastmasters International. He also held memberships with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Guild as well as with the Alberta and Canada Parks and Recreation Associations. WARREN GILMAR, loving son of Gaydene and Brian Gilmar, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Tuesday, Sep. 2, 2014 at the age of 33 years. Besides his loving parents, Warren is survived by his sister Crystal Gilmar-Korethoski of Calgary, his grandfather Robert H. Gilmar (Trudy McDonald) of Lethbridge and one nephew and two nieces Ethan, Taylor and Hailie Korethoski all of Calgary.
He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends. Warren was predeceased by his grandparents Joyce and Russel Pocha and Margaret Gilmar. HOVELING
ANNE HOVELING, beloved wife of George Hoveling of Lethbridge, passed away at St. Michael¹s Palliative Care on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the age of 86 years. She is survived by her three children: Yvonne (Ron) Pasco of Jaffray, B.C., Michael Hoveling of Weston Priory, Vermont and Mark (Ingrid) Hoveling of Lethbridge, AB, as well as her five grandchildren, Katherine (Kevin) Larsen of Calgary, Paul (Tara) Pasco of Calgary, Tonya (Braydin) Brosseau of Calgary, Alyssa Hoveling and Ben Hoveling of Lethbridge and her three great grandchildren Finnigan Pasco, Killian Pasco and Clara Larsen. Anne is also survived by one brother Jack (Lucille) Schavemaker of Calgary and four sisters, and their families in Holland. She is also survived by her special nieces and nephews Marcel (Christine) Hoveling of Elkford, B.C. and Leonne (Duncan) MacDonald of Cranbrook, B.C.
Anne will also be lovingly remembered by the Benedictine Brothers of the Weston Priory & many, many friends. Anne was predeceased by a sister Bridgette and a brother Ton. Anne was born May 3, 1928 in Amsterdam. She was educated as a seamstress before marrying George. Together with their three year old daughter they immigrated to Foremost, AB. After moving to Lethbridge, Anne continued her career as a seamstress at The Primrose Shop. Her faith was important to her, as she was an associate member of the Sisters of St. Martha’s. She enjoyed singing in the choir and volunteered many hours at St. Michael’s Health Centre in the gift shop & spending time with seniors. Anne enjoyed the outdoors & sitting on her patio was a favorite. Anne’s strong will helped her at all times and was a source of pride for her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be sadly missed. Mrs. Maaike Van Dijk of Shaughnessy, beloved wife of the late Mr. Lieuwe Van Dijk, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at the age of 92 years. She is fondly remembered for her caring nature, singing psalms and hymns, and her passion for farming. She was born on November 10, 1921 in the Netherlands. She married Lieuwe Van Dijk, and together they raised seven children. In 1980 they immigrated to Canada with three sons, and settled on a dairy farm near Park Lake, where she was still residing at the time of her departure. She will be missed by her children Doetje and Anne Hummel (Taber), Goffe and Gre Van Dijk (The Netherlands), Ijbeltje and Klaas Biewenga (The Netherlands), Ben and Fay Van Dijk (Coaldale), Marijke and Alberta Feenstra (The Netherlands), Jan Van Dijk (Park Lake), Mike and Anne Van Dijk (Park Lake), twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Lieuwe Van Dijk (1994) and three grandchildren Henrike Van Dijk (1997), Anne Marie Van Dijk (1997), and Leo Minnes Van Dijk (1997). PATRICIA MARY BROOKS, beloved wife of the late Mickey Brooks, passed away on September 2, 2014 at the age of 83 years. ³Pat² was the loving mother of Michelle Walker, Valerie (Junji) Kuno, Bruce and Tom (Colleen) Brooks and grandmother to 16 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren. She was a loving sister to her brother Tom Yates and an aunt to a large and loving extended family. Pat was predeceased by her husband Mickey, her son Bill, her great-grandson Jacob Anthony, her parents Harold and Ethel Yates, her brothers Bill and Richard Yates and her sister-in-law Midge Yates.
Pat will always be remembered by all who knew her. She loved children and was happiest with a baby on her knee; of both her own children and grandchildren and the many children she helped care for over the years. Pat and Mickey¹s house was always open, the coffee pot on and the cookies made. The house was small but so full of love that there was always room for one more. Mom¹s faith was very important to her and this helped so much as she coped with the difficult times. Mom, ³We look forward to seeing you again in heaven². MRS. DOLORES PLOMP, beloved wife of the late Mr. Bill Plomp, of Picture Butte, AB, formerly of Nobleford, AB, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at the age of 84 years. Mom was born in Lethbridge, AB, on March 15, 1930 to William & Pearl Beattie. She grew up and was raised on the family farm in the Keho District. Mom did various jobs until she married her husband of 63 years William Plomp and they moved to Nobleford, where they raised their 3 girls. In 2012 she moved to the Piyami Lodge in Picture Butte and resided there until her passing. Dolores is survived by her 3 daughters; Dianne (Tony) Wolak of Shaughnessy, Carol (Tracy) Beglaw of Nobleford and Kathy (Tim) McNichol of Nobleford, 3 grandchildren; Travis, Jody, Jennifer, 3 great grandchildren; Ryden, Walker, Sawyer, her brother Glenn Beattie, numerous nieces and nephews and her cat Nike. She was predeceased by her husband William on June 6, 2014, her parents and her siblings; Doreen (her twin) Grant, Leslie, Betty and Shirley. The family would like to thank the staff at the Picture Butte Piyami Lodge for the excellent care they gave our parents in the last 2 years, as well as the Picture Butte EMS and the Doctors and Nurses of the Chinook Regional Hospital. SWEDISH
AUDREY SUSAN SWEDISH (CHISWICK) passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the Lethbridge Chinook Regional Hospital at the age of 93. She was born in Lethbridge on June 6, 1921, the oldest of two daughters of George and Susan Chiswick. She was predeceased by her parents, sister Thelma Bambrick, her husband George Swedish and her son, Douglas Baines. Audrey is survived by her niece Heather Lejbjuk (George) of Lethbridge and her nephew Terry Bambrick (Dina) of Creston, B.C. as well as numerous cousins, great nieces and great nephews and their children. Audrey¹s working years included employment with the RCMP as secretary to the Officer Commanding the Sub-Division here in Lethbridge; part-time and eventually full time employment with the Lethbridge School District No. 51, where she retired as executive secretary to the Superintendent. As a secretary who doubted she would last for the three month probation period she ended up working for four different Superintendents retiring after 23 years in June of 1981. She certainly loved her job and took great pride in her work. Audrey has always been a history buff and was approached by the School District in her retirement to chronicle “The First Hundred Years” of the Lethbridge Public Schools. Five years later a 230 page distillation of 100 years of public school history “From College to Composite” was written. Audrey was a long time member of St. Augustine¹s Anglican Church. She became a member of the Sanctuary Guild at the age of 16 and taught in the primary Sunday School later serving as Superintendent of the Sunday School for five years and loved every minute of it. Auntie had many interests and talents. She worked with Brownies and also served as Guide Captain for the 1st Lethbridge Guide Company. Having joined the Order of the Eastern Star at age 18, she held the position of Worthy Matron in 1952 and again in 2000 for Laurel Chapter #43. In the early 60’s she was asked to accept the position of Director of Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and stayed with Kappa for eight years serving as City Sponsor for two years. She was also a long time member of Sakkara Temple No. 115. Audrey was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Henderson Lake Golf Club. Auntie loved to travel and took many many trips. She would rarely pass up an opportunity to go somewhere. She was a very talented lady who excelled at many hobbies including knitting, sewing, cross stitch, flower arranging to name a few. She had a quick wit and a great sense of humour and loved to entertain with her stories and poems some of which she wrote herself. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family will honour Audrey¹s request that no funeral service be held. Cremation in care of Christensen Salmon Generations.

THEA MARIA (KUTSCH) LEAVITT passed away peacefully on September 02, 2014, at the age of 89. She was predeceased by her loving husband Archie, son Verald, brother Otto, son-in-law Ken Stewart and great granddaughter Taylor Roberts. Thea was loved by all and will be missed by her five children: Gerry (Faye) Leavitt, Linda (Gail) Workman, Maria (Merril) Roberts, Carol Stewart, Rob (Malcolm) Leavitt, 12 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren and her brother Rudy (Vernene) Kutsch.

1931 ~ 2014
It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of William “Bill” Vegter on August 27, 2014 at the age of 83 years.  Bill is survived by three brothers Willy, Albert (Barbara), Cor (Phyllis); four sisters Jopie Knol, Edna Karsten, Tina (Marinus) Ekkel, Rita Van Zeggelaar, brother in law Andy Wind, sister in law Florence Vegter, as well as numerous nephews, nieces and their families. Bill was predeceased by two brothers Arnold and Tony, and two sisters Dia and Dessa. A Celebration of Bill¹s life will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, September 5, 2014 at the IRON SPRINGS CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH, Iron Springs, Alberta. Witdouck, Rafael (Ralph)
January 1, 1936 ­ September 2, 2014
Rafael (Ralph) Paul Witdouck, beloved husband of Mary, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2014 at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge. Ralph is survived by his wife, Mary, his sons Brian (Kathy), Calvin (Elaine) and Dale (Sandy) and his 8 grandchildren which were his pride and joy; Geni, Kevin, Brandon, Matthew, Lexi, Justin, Jared, and Shalyn. Ralph is also survived by Mary¹s family. He is predeceased by his son, Mark, his parents, Julius and Maria, infant sister, Bernice and his sister, Christine Van Raay. Ralph was born in Belgium and at the age of 14 immigrated with his family to Canada for a better life. He began work in Taber in the sugar beet fields, and the following year he got a job with the P.F.R.A. and worked for them for 6 years. During that time he met Mary Bouw and on April 30, 1960 they married and enjoyed 54 years together. Ralph began farming in the Iron Springs area with his dad in 1957. In 1964 Ralph and Mary purchased some land and farming became one of his greatest loves. His last tour of the farm was the day before he passed away. Family meant everything to him and he was most proud of his boys and his grandchildren. In 2000, Ralph and Mary retired from the farm and moved into Lethbridge where he resided until his passing. Ralph loved to socialize and developed many great friendships over the years through community, church activities, the Knights of Columbus, 60 Plus Club, card parties and coffee row. Ralph¹s fondest memories include his parent¹s accomplishments, the hard but rewarding farm life that he and Mary enjoyed, family gatherings and several trips to visit friends and family back in Belgium. He will be remembered by many for his sense of humor and his laughter. A Memorial Mass will be held at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH – 2405 12th Avenue South, Lethbridge, on Saturday, September 6th, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. with Father Kevin Tumback celebrating.
