TERENCE HENRY BASSETT
1916 ~ 2014
Terence Bassett passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at the Good Samaritans Park Meadows Facility, North Lethbridge at the age of 98 years. Terence was born in Reading, England on February 23, 1916, the oldest of four children. He was the son of a chemistry professor at Reading University, where he initially began studying medicine. He graduated from St. Bartholomew¹s Hospital, London, England as a medical doctor. In 1939 he went to Burma as a ship surgeon, returning in May. Terence served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corp. from 1939 until 1946. He would be given the honorary rank of Captain in May 1953. He went to East Africa in 1946, with the Colonial Medical Service, where he was stationed for three years in what is now Tanzania. Terence attended the Royal Eye Hospital in London, England to study Eye, Ear, Nose and throat. There he met his first wife, June. In February 1952 they left England. In March 1952 he settled in Lethbridge, Alberta where he established his practice. Over the years he saw up to three generations of some families. Terence was chief of the eye department at St. Michael¹s Hospital in Lethbridge. He retired from surgery at 65, but continued his ophthalmic practice until the age of 79. He was a devout member of St. Mary¹s Anglican Church in North Lethbridge and subsequently St. Augustine¹s Church. In the early days he was an alter server and lay-reader as well as a member of the parish vestry and the church choir. His voice carried over everyone else¹s and it commanded attention. Terence was an excellent shot. Although he had pursued big game hunting in East Africa, he was also an avid upland game bird hunter. In later years he traded his gun for a camera. Terence had purchased a movie camera in Tanzania. He shot endless reels of Ektachrome and Kodachrome with this camera, capturing the images of many wild animals all over the world. He attended numerous Snow Leopard conferences in the 1980¹s. At one such conference he met his second wife, Tatiana, who came to Canada with her two children, Artyom and Yelena. His travelling came to an end in 2004. Tatiana and her family cared for Terence in his home when he began suffering from Alzheimer¹s disease. He was admitted to Park Meadows extended care facility in 2008. Sadly, over a period of years, his recital of poetry and story-telling ability ended and eventually his voice was silenced. Terence was pre-deceased by his father, Henry, mother, Violet, brothers, Brian and Anthony, sister, Patsy Knight, second wife, Tatiana Arjannikova. He is survived by his son, Anthony, (Toronto, ON) daughter, Jennifer (Reg) MacLeod (Halifax, NS), first wife, June Mowers (Lethbridge, AB), grandsons, Galen (Halifax, NS) and David MacLeod (New Plymouth, NZ) and granddaughter, Clare Bassett (Dublin, Ireland). A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 pm, on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at St. Augustine¹s Anglican Church, 411-11th St. S., Lethbridge, AB with Reverend Andrew Horne officiating. It was the wish of Terence that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to an organization that is dedicated to the preservation of the natural environment for future generations. Send condolences at http://www.mbfunerals.com.
