MALCOLM DUNN
(1922-2014)
On September 24, 2014, Malcolm “Mac” Dunn of Red Deer, Alberta and formerly of Blairmore, Alberta, passed away at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre in Blairmore, Alberta, at the age of 91 years. He was vital and active up until 10 days before his death, exploring central and southern Alberta in his pickup truck, golfing many courses in these areas, driving teams of horses in Red Deer, and honing his keyboard skills. Mac was born on October 6, 1922 in Edmonton, Alberta to parents Peter & Kathleen Dunn. He grew up during the Great Depression and gained a “stiff upper lip” that carried him through the challenges of that era. He had no use for extravagance, self-indulgence, and self-pity. He served with Royal Canadian Air Force, growing from a farm boy to a man like so many others during World War II. Mac met Corinne Eleanor McColl in Lethbridge, where they married on September 14, 1946. They had two children, and later came several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mac spent his entire working career with Alberta Government Telephones, first as an outside plant foreman in the Crowsnest Pass, then transferring to management in Red Deer. He preferred working outside, and was pleased when AGT allowed him to end his career as a foreman of a crew laying the first buried cable throughout rural central Alberta. While working in the Pass, his favorite part of the job was the construction and ongoing operation of the microwave tower situated on the ridge above Crowsnest Lake. Later this year, he would have been retired for as long as he had worked. To the end, Mac had a sense of curiosity about everything and a keen interest in everyone. An avid reader, he loved his mysteries, and also enjoyed learning about the history of Alberta and Northern Canada. He is survived by his brother, William (Bill) Dunn of Lethbridge; his children, Peter (Isabel) Dunn of Blairmore and Patricia (Ray) Duffy of Edmonton; his grandchildren, Kevin (Jana) Dunn of Yellowknife, Melissa Brown of Sparwood, Micaela (Brad Istace) Brown of St. Albert, George (Laurie) Duffy of Edmonton, Shannon (Ryan) Webb of Mundare and Heather (Ted) Duffy of Slave Lake; his great grandchildren, Aisling, Lochlan, Jack, Xander, Mia, Isabel, Cameron, Keira, Malcolm, and Sawyer; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his wife, Corinne Dunn; his parents, Peter & Kathleen Dunn; and grandchildren, Michael and Stephen. A very special thank you must be given to Joel Martens, of the Heritage Ranch in Red Deer, who gave Mac so many opportunities this past summer to live life to the fullest. Mac loved Heritage Ranch, its horses, its activity, and the people who worked there. A Memorial Service will be held next spring at the Heritage Ranch in Red Deer.
