DUCKETT, ANTHONY “TONY”
May 2, 1926 Blackburn, England
November 10, 2014 Calgary, Alberta
Tony passed from this world to the next on November 10, 2014 at the age of 88 years. Tony was born in Blackburn, Lancashire on May 2, 1926. He was educated in both England and Scotland, served with the Royal Air Force in 1945 and completed his teacher training in 1946. He met Kit Reeves in Haverhill, West Suffolk, where they both taught, and they were married in 1949. In 1953 he brought his young family to Canada which he saw as “a land of opportunity”. He taught with Indian Affairs in such places as Brocket, Caughnawaga (Quebec), and Hobbema until 1960, and then moved his growing family to Lethbridge where he took up an appointment to teach Industrial Arts at St. Francis Boy¹s High School. He attended summer school and obtained his Bachelor of Education in 1964 from the then University of Alberta (Calgary). Tony progressed within the administration of the Lethbridge Catholic School system, becoming Vice Principal of St. Mary¹s Junior High / Elementary School in 1966 and Principal of Our Lady of the Assumption Elementary School from 1972 until 1982. Kit and Tony spent their first eleven years of retirement on Vancouver Island where they enjoyed salmon fishing and travelling to the Far East, Britain, and various parts of Canada and the US. As Tony¹s health began to deteriorate, they moved back to Alberta to be near their extended family. Tony said he was never bored. He enjoyed his hobbies (stamp collecting, reading, fishing, woodworking and playing bridge) and was always available to fix things at his children¹s homes. Tony was a quiet, kind and gentle man. His life membership in the Knights of Columbus attested to his faith and strong moral values. He always led by example and had the courage of his convictions. He was very loving and supportive of Kit and his greatest pride was in his family. Tony was well respected by all who knew him: his family, his students, his colleagues, his community acquaintances and even as he neared the end of his life, by the staff and residents of Bow Crest Care Centre where he will no doubt be remembered for his joy in participating in the singsongs! Tony is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Katherine “Kit” Duckett; his seven children, John (Susan), Michael (Sue), Paul (Joan), Christopher, Peter (Mona), Brian (Anne) and Mary (Keith Meservia); his twenty grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and his two sisters, Mary Harrison and Bernadette (Cyril) Dandy of Lancashire, England. He was predeceased by his parents Reginald and Clare.
