BURLA
1921 – 2015
ANN BURLA, beloved wife of John Burla, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Edith Cavell Nursing Home in Lethbridge at the age of 93 years. She was a long-term resident of Edith Cavell, having spent the last 14 1/2 years there until her passing. Ann was born on December 19, 1921 at Zascianocze Trembowla, Poland. At the age of four, her parents and family immigrated to Canada where they established their new home life in Canmore, Alberta. Upon completing high school, Ann enrolled at the Royal Alexandra School of Nursing in Edmonton. After graduating in the 1940’s, Ann moved to Lethbridge and began her career as a Registered Nurse at the Galt Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital and Auxiliary – later moving to the Roy Clinic. It was in Lethbridge where she eventually met John Burla. After a courtship, Ann and John were married on July 22, 1950. Their marriage lasted almost 50 years until John passed away on July 10, 2000. He also was a resident of Edith Cavell. Ann was an avid and vocal hockey fan of the Lethbridge Broncos and later, the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Ann and John were shareholders and long-time season ticket holders. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge and Crib. The couple were active members of the Cosmopolitan Club of Lethbridge and enjoyed camping on their annual trips back to Canmore and British Columbia. Ann leaves to mourn four sons; Mike (Linda Cook), Don (Dianne Hackson), Ken (Anna) and Rick (Shelley). Ann is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Johanna, her sister Jeanette and two infant siblings. She is survived by her brother John Krasnodemski of Banff and Olga Garcia of Calgary. A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Frank Peta officiating. A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 1:00 PM with Deacon Frank Peta officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations in memory of John Burla be made to the ALS Society, Suite 250, 4723 – 1 Street S.W., Calgary, AB, T2G 4Y8. The Burla family would like to sincerely thank the entire staff of the Edith Cavell Nursing Home for all of their compassionate and tender care of our mother during her last years of life. EMILE THEODORE SCHAUERTE
1923 – 2015
Emile Theodore Schauerte slipped away peacefully at the Pincher Creek Hospital to meet his Lord and his beloved Ruth. Emile will be lovingly remembered by his children Mary (Ken) Clinton, Sharon (Art) Bonertz, Pete (Rhonda) Schauerte, Diana Shortt and Donna Schauerte; 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; his brothers Joe (Jean), Otto ³Happy², Paul ³Hank², Lawrence (Joan) and Walter (Jane) and sister- in-law Mary (Bill) Everts. Emile was born to John and Clara Schauerte east of St. Henry¹s Church on September 28, 1923. Emile learned his work ethic at a very young age running the farm. He was a man of many skills including mechanics, farming, projectionist, meat cutter, crafts person, truck driver and whatever it took to raise his family. His passions were riding horses, wood working crafts and dancing with Ruth. Emile was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Windy Slopes Health Foundation a member of St. Michael¹s School Board from 1964 until 1967and working with Barry and Sophie Carney at the Cowley Lions Club. Dad was a gentle, caring and giving man and was always willing to come to the aide of anyone that needed help or assistance. Dad could always make everyone smile with his quick wit and colloquial saying with a twinkle in his eye. He enjoyed his homes no matter where they were including the last few years at Vista Village. We loved dad immensely and we miss him always.
Relatives and Friends are invited to the Prayer Service to be held at St. Michael¹s Catholic Church (958 Christie Avenue, Pincher Creek) on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. Michael¹s Catholic Church on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 11:00 A.M., with Reverend Silvano Vargas presiding. Memorial Donations in Emile¹s name may be made directly to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation Box 2554, Pincher Creek T0K 1W0.
Hildur Eriksson née Sandquist 1911 – 2014
Hildur Eriksson was born in 1911 in the house her father built at 429 13th St South in Lethbridge and lived there for 34 years until she married. Hildur taught piano and had many pupils in and around Lethbridge. Her elder brother Carl studied journalism in Seattle and wrote for the Herald from time to time. Her wedding to Sven G Eriksson in 1945 was at Southminster Church not far from her home. They first lived in Rochester Minnesota and then continued to Sweden where they made their home in Djursholm outside Stockholm. Sven passed away in 2010. Hildur passed away peacefully at her home on Dec 20 2014. She was 103. Hildur leaves three sons, 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. INA PALMER

Ina was born on October 3, 1922 at the farm home in Robsart, Sask to Olaf and Olina Teigen. There were six children: Emma (Gene) Swihart, Gordon (Barbara) Teigen, Olga (Walter) Hogg, Ina (Earl) Palmer, Edna (Bill) Behrman, Martha (Al) Flick. When Ina was 6 years of age, her mother passed away and she was raised by her Uncle Ole and Aunt Gertie Wenaas and their family of six: Gudrun (Chester) Johnson, Opal (Alan) Lester, Paul (Marg and later Evelee) Wenaas, Olga (Ira) Smith; Myrtle (Ralph Tiedeman, Orland (Margie & later Norma) Wenaas, and Orland’s twin, Oscar Wenaas. Ina attended school at Robsart, Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. She clerked in Abotts’ Grocery store in Robsart. After attending Teacher’s College in Regina in 1942, she taught in rural schools in Saskatchewan, B.C. and Alberta for five years. She worked at the Palomino Restaurant under Mr. Kreutzer and Marie Patterson and then at the Post Office for 13 years under Mrs. Walshe, Curt Butler, Gordon Burrows & Len Tilbe. She married Earl Palmer in Fort Macleod on July 14, 1950. They had four children: Jacqueline (Glen) Burrows, and their children Jason, Chloe & Lane Burrows, Wade, Megan and Taylor Burrows, Angie (Mike) Findlay, Myka and Shea, Jaime (Chad) Gray and Peyton; Karen (Doug) Christie and their children Kate (Ryan) Vogelaar, Riley Black & Sarah Christie; Melanie (Shane) Brooks and their children Michael and Renae; and Tracy (Jackie) Palmer and their children Eric and Bradley. She was predeceased by her husband Earl on August 6, 2008. Ina enjoyed many happy camping trips with family and friends. She loved to read, play cards, take daily walks and enjoyed living the past few years at the Pioneer Lodge. She loved her family and extended family dearly and felt very blessed to have been so welcomed into the Wenaas home at a very young age. A special thank you goes out to the Fort Macleod Pioneer Lodge, Dr. Uwalka and staff of the Fort Macleod Health Care Center, Dr. Benke and staff of the Jack Ady Centre for their wonderful care.
A Celebration of Life will be held at TRINITY UNITED CHURCH, 220 – 20th St., Fort Macleod on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Church Memorial Fund, Box 100, Fort Macleod, Alberta T0L 0Z0 or the Fort Macleod Handi-bus Society, c/o Box 881, Fort Macleod, Alberta T0L 0Z0.
