Gloria Dian Bell
1958 – 2015
Gloria Dian Bell, age 56, passed away peacefully at the Edith Cavell Care Centre, Lethbridge, Alberta, on Friday, March 20, 2015, after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer. Gloria was the fourth child of Ben G. Bell and Novajean Swihart, born on March 28, 1958, at the Municipal Hospital, Lethbridge, Alberta. Gloria received her education in the Lethbridge area, where she chose to make her life. She was experienced in Warehousing and Customer Service. She was a proud supporter of the Lethbridge Special Olympics where she coached bowling, cheered on power-lifting, and provided support and encouragement wherever needed. She was honoured to have received the 2014 Volunteer of the Year Award. She is survived by her son and light of her life, Adam. Parents: Ben (Sharon) Bell, Novajean Swihart (Ray). Siblings: Ben (Nan) Bell, Bonnie (Brent) Murray, Yvonne McPherson, Patti (Paul) Malone, Dale (Susan) Dersch, Darlene (Brian) Spiller, Renea (Mike) Egeland, Dawn (Shane) Weston, Terry Pierson. Uncle: Garret (Karen) Swihart. Gloria was much loved by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We would like to take time to thank everyone who provided the wonderful, compassionate care that Gloria received throughout her struggle. Ruth Evelyn Evans, loving wife of Gordon Evans and beloved mother of Valerie (Roy) Stotz and Randy (Cheryl) Mack, left this life in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 22, 2015. Also left to mourn her passing are her cherished grandsons Chad (Tina) Stotz and Dustin Stotz; step-daughters Bonnie Evans (Jim Guiboche) and Nancy (Mike) Skrynyk; granddaughters Tegan Rosato, Candace (Justin) Gillis, Karissa Skrynyk and Kyla Skrynyk (Clay Soloshy); great- granddaughters Ava and Kate Gillis; and step-grandchildren Holly and Tom Bergerman. She will also be deeply missed by her surviving siblings Gladys Stromsmoe, Walter (Mary Rose) Rasmussen, Carole (George) Hendrickson, and Dick (Marion) Rasmussen; sisters-in-law Marion Rasmussen and Joyce Rasmussen; and brother-in-law Eldon Conquergood; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Richard and Minda Rasmussen and siblings Lloyd, Helen, Gordon, Violet, and Margaret. Ruth had many passions – family, friends, teaching, travelling, gardening and lifelong learning. She would never turn down the chance to fly, including a glider flight for her 80th birthday. Her cookies were sent home by the dozens with family and friends, but her amazing cinnamon buns were best at the kitchen table with fresh coffee and conversation. She was many things to many people, and will be deeply missed and forever loved. It is with great sadness that the family of Darlene Hare announces her passing on Sunday, March 22, 2015 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Darlene was a bright light. She saw the beauty in everything and was able to translate that through so many different mediums, painting, pottery, and music. Her practice of Yoga and Meditation was vital to her cancer survival for the past 2 years. Every challenge, every disability that came along she viewed as a project that she would take in stride and work through it. Darlene is survived by her husband Fred Hare and daughter Jennifer Misura (Patrick, Evrett and Colby) and son Jason Hare (Karen). In lieu of flowers the family requests donations towards the purchase of a tree and park bench to honor Darlene’s memory at Henderson Lake in Lethbridge, Alberta. MOSIER
EUGENE “GENE” O. MOSIER, cherished husband of Agnes Mosier, of Picture Butte, passed away at the St. Michael’s Health Centre on Monday, March 23rd, 2015 at the age of 86 years. Gene is survived by his wife Agnes – married for almost 42 years, his children Trudy (Cliff) Nelson, Rick (Patty) Mosier, Kathy (Tom) Lunnin and Agnes’ daughter Shawna Gienow; his grandchildren Bryce (Rhonda) Nelson (great-grandsons Cameron and Spencer), great-grandson Devin (Stef) Booth (great great-grandson Finnigan), Trisha (Adam) Mickelson (great- granddaughter Heidi) and Candace Lunnin; as well as Shawna’s daughters; Christine (Toby) Dodsworth, Amanda Dodsworth and Samantha Gienow; his brother Bob (Olga) Mosier and a sister Joanne Rogers. He was predeceased by his parents Clark & Grace, granddaughter Tanya Nelson and a brother-in-law Ed Rogers. Gene was born July 21, 1928 in Daysland, Alberta. He started out as a farm boy but his career was in the propane industry, first a propane delivery man, then as a gasfitter and pipefitter and eventually owning his own business in St. Albert (we moved a lot when we were kids). He sold the business to Cigas and took on the roll as manager for them first in Edmonton then moving to Calgary in 1980, before retiring and becoming a handyman. This last career took him well into his seventies before he and Agnes retired together and moved to Picture Butte in 2007 (small town life has suited them both). A Celebration of Gene’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME,2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. with a Reception to follow at Cornerstone Funeral Home’s reception room. KENNETH LEE PHILLIPS, beloved husband of Yvonne Phillips passed away very peacefully at home on Saturday, March 21, 2015. Besides his loving wife Yvonne, Ken is survived by six daughters: Shirley, Laura, Catherine, Linda, all of BC, Melanie of Costa Rica, and Heather Woods of Lethbridge; two sisters Ruby Hill and Ruth Waterhouse, both of Lethbridge. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Mary Phillips, and brother Larry. Ken was born in the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge on September 5, 1930. He received his schooling in Picture Butte and Jackson, Michigan. In his lifetime, Ken was a heavy equipment machine operator, trucker, and later went on to retire from a successful career in sales. Ken was known for his warm gentle nature and great sense of humour and will be missed so much by those who loved him. Friends may meet the family on Friday, March 27 from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, LETHBRIDGE STAKE CENTRE, 2410-28 Street South, Lethbridge. Mildred Nellie Scout, “Pokskiaakii”, beloved wife of the late Louie Scout, passed away on Friday March 20th, 2015 at the age of 83 years. Mildred was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. Mildred leaves to mourn her children, Sandra, and children, Corrine (Garrett), J.R. (Leslie), L.G., C.J; Flora (Don) and children, Jenny (Tyson), Jeremy, Amy (Darcy), Jonelle, Little John; Gary (Kym), and children, Millie, Ross (Jacey), Samantha, Dexter (Dezary); also 25 great grandchildren, and 2 great -great grandchildren. Mildred also leaves to mourn in her passing siblings, Wayne (Christine) Davis, Roland Scout, Brian Scout and Rosemarie Davis; extended families include Big Sorrel Horse, Rider, Eagle Bear, Red Crow, Black Water, First Charger, Blood, Wadsworth, Brown Weasel, Many Grey Horses, Scouts and Kings. Mom was born on the Blood Reserve on May 26, 1931 to Frank and Flossy (Rider) Big Sorrel Horse. She received her education at the St.Paul¹s Residential School and later attended a Life Skills course in Standoff. Mom worked at various jobs in Southern Alberta as house keeper, and at the Tanco Windows and Doors (Magrath). The job that Mildred enjoyed the most was raising her family, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren. Mom will be remembered for her thoughtful giving nature, her humour and her strength that she so lovingly shared with her family and friends. Mom was pre-deceased by her husband Louis (1991), her children Van (1977), Kevin (1979), Missy (1989), Garth (1991), grandson Corey (2009), great grandson Kevin Dexter (2014), parents Frank Big Sorrel Horse, Flossy Rider, brothers Gilbert Big Sorrel Horse, Warner, Franklin, Reil Scout, sisters Frankina and Margorie Big Sorrel Horse. Mom and Dad lived in various places in Southern Alberta and settled in Magrath in 1966. They resided there until 1980 and moved to their homestead near Lavern, Alberta. It was there that they built their farm, raising horses, cattle as well as other farm animals, including chickens, geese, rabbits, and her 2 favorite goats ³Gus² and ³Jimmy². It was here where her grandchildren were given the opportunity to experience farm life. Mom was actively involved in traditional spirituality, she attended ceremonies conducted by many notable ceremonialists who looked forward to her attendance. She went to the Sundance in Montana several years; memories of her involvement are still held by lodgekeepers. Mom was known to be a very strong and noble woman. She lived a ceremonial life in a good and reverent manner which she role modeled to those who participated in ceremonies with her. Mom spent her final years at the Kainai Continuing Care Centre where she acquired many friendships and considered this her home, we would like to take this time to thank the staff at KCC for taking such good care of mom. Her legacy will live on through her teachings and the values which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. A Wake Service will be held at the Senator Gladstone Hall, Blood Reserve on Thursday, March 26th from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary¹s Catholic Church, Blood Reserve on Friday, March 27th at 11:00 a.m. Interment in the Blood Band Cemetery. Mrs. Barbara MacDonald Simmons of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Robert Simmons, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the age of 91 years. Barb is survived by her four children; Colin Simmons (Kyra) of Calgary, Ron Simmons (Susan) of Winnipeg, Kathleen Murphy (Charlie) of Lethbridge and Debbie Buksewich-McPhie (Curtis) of Vancouver; and her seven grandchildren, Ryan, Alaire, Danielle, Bobby and Genevieve Simmons, and Ainsley and Aleah Murphy. Barb was predeceased by her beloved husband Bob in 2013, her mother Barbara and father George, her brother Dugald and his wife Pat, her grandson, William Murphy, and her granddaughter Alexandra Simmons. Barb’s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff at the GARU unit on floor 5A of the Chinook Regional Hospital for the care and attention they provided to Barb during her last days. Also a heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Columbia Assisted Living Center for making Barb feel “well taken care of” for the last two years.
