 FINLEY

MELBA LEILA (LAMB) FINLEY, beloved wife of the late J. Ray Finley, beloved mother of Carol Diane Mathes, and Brian Ray Finley, passed away in Lethbridge on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at the age of 99 years.
Leila Finley was born November 5,1915 in Raymond, AB, the sixth of seven children, to Charles and Eldora Lamb.
She leaves to cherish her memory two children: Carol (Ron) Mathes and Brian Finley; four grandchildren: Renee (Steve) Pease, David (Amanda) Levesey, Caitlyn Finley and Jane Finley; two great grandchildren: Lauren Leila Pease and Aidan Steven Pease.
Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband J. Ray Finley, both her parents, and all of her siblings: Floyd Lamb, Dean (Irene) Lamb, Kathryn (Dewey) Ernshaw, Norma (Bill) Minshull, Inez (Orvin) Hicken, Marie (Grant) Smith.
After completing high school in Raymond, Mom went to Salt Lake City to train as a stenographer, which eventually led to a steno position at the new Sugar Factory in Picture Butte, where she met the love of her life, J. Ray Finley. They married in 1940 in Lethbridge and settled in Picture Butte. The family grew by one in 1944 when Carol Diane came along, followed two years later by little brother Brian Ray.
Mom stayed and worked at home until both kids were in school and then returned to the Sugar Factory for a few years. She then joined the Bank of Nova Scotia and was there for over 20 years.
Following Ray’s retirement from the Sugar Factory in 1980 (coincidentally the same year the factory closed), they moved into Lethbridge.
Mom became a happy grandmother first in 1969 with the birth of Carol’s daughter Renee, followed five years later with little brother David Ray. Nana became a grandmother again in 1991 with the birth of Brian’s daughter Caitlyn Renee, followed in 1996 with little sister Jane Ray. Mom welcomed great grandkids Lauren Leila Pease in 2004 and Aidan Steven Pease in 2008, Renee’s two children.
Mom and Dad enjoyed their retirement years in Lethbridge, making new friends and visiting kids and grandkids. After Dad’s passing in 1994, Mom moved “uptown” to a seniors’ high-rise, where she cooked full and well-balanced meals for herself. The family used to joke that “Mom was into health food before health food was cool”. Mom moved into Columbia House Assisted Living in 2010 after her pelvic fracture, and got around very well with her walker. She made many new friends there and socialized with them right up until her broken arm and hospitalization.
Thank-you to Dr. Gillis and the wonderful, dedicated nursing staff on 3C at Chinook Regional.
Mom will always be remembered with love for her kind, gentle way, her outstanding baking and love of family.
The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, COPPERWOOD CHAPEL, 9 Keystone Terrace West, Lethbridge. Friends may meet the family from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

 Dr. Bernard Stillwell
1929 – 201
“Now cracks a noble heart”. Dr. John Bernard Stillwell, who died peacefully in his 87th year on July 10, 2015, was a man of compassion, many interests, and great determination, beloved by his family, friends and the patients he served for over forty years.
Bernard was born on the 31st of March, 1929 near Leeds, Yorkshire, England. He was educated at Bristol Grammar Prep School and Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Hertfortshire. Captivated by the ocean from a young age, he spent two and a half years serving with 45 Commando Royal Marines in Malta, Palestine, North Africa and Jordan. The allure of exploring new places and ideas never left him.
Following his National Service, he qualified as a doctor, studying first at Queen Mary College, University of London, and then at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel. It was here that he met his wife-to-be, Frances, a midwife and nurse. Bernard loved to tell the story of how he met her while delivering a baby under her watchful gaze. They were married in 1956.
In March 1959, with their eldest daughter, the young family immigrated to Canada, sailing across the Atlantic Ocean to Halifax. From Halifax they journeyed westward by train, finally crossing the snow-covered prairies to Alberta. Bernard practised medicine first in Coaldale before moving to the Campbell Clinic in Lethbridge in 1961, where he remained until his retirement in 1995. Throughout his forty years of practice, he was trusted by his patients and respected by his colleagues. When speaking of his vocation, he always referred to ‘looking after’ and ‘taking care’ of people.
Bernard’s interests took him on many journeys, inward and outward. A man of perpetual curiosity, he enjoyed photography, cross country skiing, reading, poetry, swimming, and sailing at St Mary’s Sailing Club, where the family were longtime members. He loved experiencing new places with Frances, with whom he enjoyed several wonderful trips abroad. He was also a longstanding member of St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, where he served two terms on vestry and was involved with Stephen Ministry.
Bernard was the dearly beloved husband of Frances, father and father-in-law to Alison and husband Greg Wirch, Elizabeth and husband David Stewart, Andrew and his wife Denise, and Vivian and her husband Rick Torres, as well as to adopted daughter Hazel and her husband Davidson, living in Dominica, West Indies. His grandchildren include Laura (and husband Andrew Gillott), Julia, Greg, Claire, Sophie, Liam, Aidan, Tourné, Eliska (and husband Shawn), as well as great grandchildren Julien and Kilani.
Bernard was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Edith, and older sister Joan.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, July 27, 2015 at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411-11 Street South, Lethbridge, AB.
In lieu of flowers, and if desired, memorial donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders, 720 Spadina Avenue, Suite 402 Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 2T9, Christian Blind Mission, 3844 Stouffville Road, PO Box 800 Stouffville ON L4A 7Z9, or St Michael’s Foundation – Palliative Care, 1400 9 Ave South, Lethbridge AB T1J 4V5.
