Leah Goodman

1955 – 2016

With both sadness and gentle relief, the family of Leah Goodman announces her passing on Sunday April 3rd, 2016 at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit at the age of 60.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sister Marcia and brother-in-law Don Taylor of Lethbridge who have so tenderly loved and cared for Leah; her adoring brother Bill, sister-in-law Ada and nephews Liron, Idan and Maayan of Israel; auntie Doris Balcovske of Lethbridge as well as many cousins and family friends far and near. Leah was predeceased by her parents, Elmer and Sharna Goodman, who nurtured her capacity for love and joy and made her “the heart” of the family.

Leah was born and raised in Lethbridge and attended Dorothy Gooder School. Following in her Dad’s spirit, to Leah “Lethbridge was Camelot”. She loved everything about her community from musical theatre, to her many friends at SACLA (Southern Alberta Community Living Association) and ARC (Ability Resource Centre), volunteer work, dances, Waterton Lake Park, annual trips to William Watson (Kananaskis) and Big Fork, Montana for musical theatre. At Dorothy Gooder School, Leah met her good friend Jane Grigg and, years later, they would become roommates for over 25 years. They were quite the dynamic duo!

Leah had many loves: white wine, Elvis, all musicals, her photos, and balloons. Most of all she treasured any occasion with family and friends, particularly the camaraderie of people sharing and laughing around a dinner table which was laden with good food and a little wine. People were most often captivated by her warm smile and, even toward the end when Leah lost the ability to speak, she was able to connect and touch people’s hearts in her own way. As much as people contributed to Leah`s life, she was a constant source of delight to so many of us.

The family would like to thank SACLA for enabling Leah to live a full and rich life in the community and more recently in our home. Another heartfelt thank you to Ability Resource Centre for enriching not only Leah`s life but supporting our family. As Leah began to fail, many more people became involved in her care. We are especially grateful for the warm and compassionate care Leah received from Renae Peterson of Home Care, Doctors Brenda Ireland, Roland Ikuta, Susan Byers and Stephen Kwan, and the Palliative team at St. Michael`s.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 at 2:00PM at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street S., Lethbridge, AB., with Garry Kohn and Reverend Erin Phillips officiating.

The family gratefully decline flowers. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Southern Alberta Community Living Association, 401 – 21 `A` Street North, Lethbridge, Alberta T1H 6L6 or to the Alzheimer Society, 402 – 740 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 0N9
