It is with great sadness we announce the passing of BRANDON PAUL BLOCK. He passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 23, 2016 in his home in Calgary at the age of 27 years.

A Funeral Service will be held at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 1:30 p.m.

Interment to follow in the Royal View Cemetery.


Maurice Edward Brayley

1923 -2016

Mr. Maurice Edward Brayley of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at St. Therese Villa on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at the age of 92 years.

Maurice will be sadly missed by Jean, his loving wife of 67 years and their 6 children.

He was the proud father of Virginia (Gary), Stefan (Yvonne), Susan (Dale), Russell (Renee), Evelyn (Lorne – deceased), and Jennifer (Michael).

Maurice “Pop” is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Elsie First Rider (Naaminnima)

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we, the family of Elsie First Rider, announce her passing at Cardston, AB on Monday, June 21, 2016 at the age of 87 years. Surrounded by her loving children, the Creator called her name and mom began her journey to reunite with our dad, the late Herbert First Rider and our baby brother, the late Herbert George First Rider, Jr. Left to mourn her passing is Son: Dennis First Rider (Dorothy), and Daughters, Doris Sweet Grass (Tom), Evelyn Sweet Grass, Velma Red Crow (Godfrey), Elaine Potts (Bruce), Mary Chief Calf (Denis), Marilyn Standing Alone (Alfonse) and adopted daughter Thelma Murphy; Sister: Isabel Healy, numerous Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Predeceased by her best friend and sister: Molly Healy, Brothers: John Sweet Grass and Alfred Sweet Grass, sisters, Annie and Mildred Sweet Grass, Mother: Mary Frank and Father: Leonard Sweet Grass, Grandson: Godfrey Red Crow, Jr.

A Family Service will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at 4:00 PM at Eden’s Funeral Home, 2424 5th Ave, Fort Macleod, AB with the wake service following at the Gladstone Hall on the Blood Reserve from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church at Cardston, AB. Interment at the Blood Band Cemetery. Following the graveside service, a feast will be held at the Gladstone Hall.


MILDRED LONG

Mildred (Millie) Agnes Long, beloved wife of Harry Long passed away on June 23, 2016 at the age of 82.

She leaves to mourn her husband of almost 63 years, Harry; her twin brother William (Milton) Alexander; her children, Cheryl (Barry) Knight, Greg (Darlene) Long, Stephen (Dale) Long, David (Dixie) Long; eight grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; her cousin and best friend Isabel (Walter) Hewko, and her very good friends Darlene Sinclair of Regina and Elaine Ayling of Calgary.

Millie was born in Ardrossen, Alberta to Maisie and John Alexander. She started working at sixteen at Woodwards in the toy department. She and Harry married October 17, 1953. Harry and Millie raised their children in Edmonton and Stettler. Millie owned the knit and craft shop in Stettler, honing her business and crafter skills. She later went to work at and retired from the Bank of Nova Scotia. Mom and Dad retired to Leduc and later Lethbridge. Mom was always proud of her children’s accomplishments and quick to tell you about them. Her greatest joys were decorating her home, her coffee, shopping, and clothes with bling. She loved to model for the LSCO or Red Hatter’s fashion shows. Her numerous friends will miss her kindness and her wit.

Our thanks go out to Dr. Jonker, Dr. Brigden, and Dr. Ireland for their thoughtful and caring service. We are also grateful to the Jack Ady Centre. Mom always felt she was welcome and at home when she came for treatments.

As per Millie’s wishes there will not be a memorial or funeral. However, family invite friends to join us at the Sierras of Courtyard 2020 – 32 Street S (Door 2) from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm, Thursday, June 30th for a come and go celebration of her life. If one so chooses, donations can be made in Millie’s name to the Chinook Regional Hospital, Jack Ady Cancer Centre or St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit.


Stanislawa “Stasia”

Michalska

1926 -2016

Mrs. Stanislawa “Stasia” Michalska of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Joseph Michalski, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the age of 89 years.

She is survived by her family in Poland; son Wladyslaw (Alina) Michalski; grandson Marcin (Claudia); grand-daughter Edyta; and her great-grandchildren Dominika, Timek, and Jakub; sister Pola (Zbyszek) Radzinski; and sisters-in-law Irene Slodkowski and Wanda Stencil. As well as numerous nephews and nieces in Poland and Canada.

Stasia was pre-deceased by her husband Joseph Michalski; her mother Sabina Lebioda; brothers Czeslaw (Chester) and Boleslaw (Bolek); and sister Albina.

Stasia will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Vigil Rites (prayers) will be held at 5:00PM on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 St. S., Lethbridge, Alberta, led by Father Ian Gagne.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at ST. CATHERINE’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 762 Crescent Ave N Picture Butte, with Father Ian Gagne officiating.

Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

1938 – 2016

Faye Hildegard Shaw, beloved wife of the late Melvin Shaw, passed away in Taber on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the age of 78 years.

VANDEN BERG

MR. NORMAN PHILLIP VANDEN BERG, of Foremost, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Saturday, June 18th, 2016 at the age of 61 years.

He is survived by: parents Stephen and Johanna Vanden Berg, sister Carol Schuld, brothers Jim (Joan) and Mark (Lorelei), and sixteen nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by: brother Arthur, niece Abby, sister-in-law Julie.

After attending Foremost school, Norm worked on the family farm and for local farmers. In 2000 he moved into town and worked at the Foremost Seed Cleaning plant till 2015. He liked to sing and was part of the Foremost Theatrical Society. Norm loved sports, playing with the Foremost Bombers (basketball) for many years and then became passionate about golf, using holiday time to find new golf courses.

The Funeral Service will be held at MARANATHA CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH, 260 McGill Blvd. West, Lethbridge, AB., on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Cameron Fraser officiating.

The Interment will be held at the High Field Cemetery, County of 40 Mile, AB., on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 11:00 A.M.

WURTZ

Our beloved husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa, JACOB G. “JAKE” WURTZ, went home to be with his Saviour on Thursday, June 23rd, 2016 at the age of 83 years. He was surrounded by his loving family who will cherish his memory.

He is survived by his wife of more than 58 years, Minnie, his daughters Brenda (Jerry), Karen, Diane (Ron) as well as his precious grandchildren, Dini (John), Sandra, Ryan (Terena), and Monique and his beloved great-grandchildren, Madison, Jaden, Jonathan, Thea and Lauton. He is also survived by his brother John and his sister Elizabeth and many nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his mom and dad, Mary and George, and his brothers and sisters, George, Mary, Andy, Annie and Joe.

Jake was born near Magrath on January 16th, 1933 and raised in rural Southern Alberta. The majority of his career was spent working at Noble Cultivators. He spent many years on the consistory of Monarch Reformed Church. He worked as a volunteer firefighter for the Nobleford Fire Department.

He was a caring man who loved his family very much and worked hard to support them. He especially adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jake loved fishing, playing pool, visiting with friends at the mall (lunch counter), searching the summer fallow for arrowheads with his father-in-law Gerrit and playing his harmonica.

We will miss his sense of humour, his encouraging smile and hugs, his phone calls, his singing, his harmonica playing and his prayers for all of us. Heaven’s gain is our loss. Dad was well loved.

Our family wishes to send a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the nurses and doctors at Chinook Regional Hospital who looked after dad with kindness and respect.

A Come and Go Visitation with family will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Monday, June 27, 2016, from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Jake’s life will be held at the MONARCH REFORMED CHURCH on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverends Bob Derrick and Roger Halverson officiating.
