COLBURN

LORNA COLBURN, beloved wife of Gerald Colburn, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Fairmont Extendicare, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, August 20th, 2016 at the age of 71 years.

Besides her husband, Gerry, Lorna is survived by her daughters Lesley (Ron) Swartz and Heather (Scott) Hadford, both of Lethbridge, brother Dr. Bruce (Ann) MacWhirter of Halifax, sister Elaine (Peter) Lines of Boca Raton, FL, granddaughters Katherine and Caroline Colburn-Swartz, and Meghan MacWhirter; nephews and nieces Bruce MacWhirter, Stephanie (John) MacHopkins, Peter MacWhirter and Stephanie Lines. She was predeceased by brother David (Wendy) MacWhirter of Calgary.

Lorna worked in a medical office in St. John’s, Newfoundland until she met and married her loving husband Gerry. Lorna was known for her wit, loyalty to her family and humour. She had a passion and talent for quilting and knitting. She took great pleasure in gardening. Mom, life will never be the same without you in it. Your laugh and smile, your hugs and kisses will be memories we will cherish.

At Lorna’s request, no formal funeral service will be held.

Jack Jones

January 27, 1920 – August 24, 2016

Jack passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the age of 96 years. Jack is survived by his loving wife Alfreda; daughter Penny (Robert) Marshall; two grandsons Sean (Nancy) Marshall, Ryan (Tanis) Marshall; three great- granddaughters McKenna, Rowan and Jordyn Marshall; sister Ivy Chenger; 2 sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews and their families. Jack was predeceased by his father Henry Parry Jones; mother Elsie Emily Jones and his brothers David, Richard and Frank. Johanna Donkersgoed

1926 – 2016

Mrs. Johanna Donkersgoed passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016.

Johanna is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Gerrit; her children Joyce and Ken; daughter-in-law Alana; grandchildren Gerrit and Braden; her brother Bert; sister Trix; as well as many cousins, sisters and brothers-in-law.

Johanna was born May 30, 1926 in Barneveld, Netherlands. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1952. The family settled in Iron Springs.

Gerrit and Johanna moved to Coaldale in 1961 to farm, where they remained until her passing. Her last few years were made possible to live at home with the help of her 2 loving caregivers Beverly and Rowena.

Johanna was a faithful Christian and loved music and flowers. She was a great cook and loved gardening. Johanna was a member of the Dutch Canadian Club and loved to Klompen dance. She was a wise, patient, independent, caring, strong woman with a fighting spirit that carried her though her many years. She will be sadly missed by all that had the pleasure to know her.

A Celebration of Johanna’s Life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4th St. S., Lethbridge, AB.

LEAVITT

WADE LEAVITT passed away in Lethbridge, Aug. 23, 2016 with his family at his side. He was predeceased by his brother Kelly Leavitt. He was survived by his daughter Ashley Leavitt of Lloydminster, sister Lori (Mike) Waldner of Lethbridge and parents Carol and Darryl Leavitt also from Lethbridge. There will be no service held.

NIKLES

1966 – 2016

GREGORY WAYNE NIKLES, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Roxanne Nikles, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital surrounded by his family, after a courageous, hard fought battle with cancer, on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at the age of 50 years.

Greg’s memory will be cherished by his loving wife and companion of 26 years, Roxanne and their boys Brendan and Rylan. Greg will be dearly missed by his mom, brother, sisters, nieces and nephews, his second family and his many friends and colleagues.

Greg valued his family. He loved and enjoyed their many vacations, especially their time spent at their Phoenix property. Greg proudly supported his sons, Brendan and Rylan in all their endeavours, cheering them on at their sporting events. During numerous winters, Greg would build an outdoor rink in their backyard for the boys on which they would spend hours practicing. Greg was a food connoisseur. He and Roxanne spent many special evenings together appreciating good food, wine and each other’s company. They spent their 20th anniversary in Huatulco, Mexico. Their love was celebrated with a rose petal path and a candlelight dinner on the beach. Greg shared a special bond with Roxanne, whom he called his “angel”. She provided boundless support throughout his illness and their life together.

Greg had a very strong passion for the agriculture and seed industry, as he was an active member of the Canadian Seed Trade Association and was a chairman of the hybrid canola seed production committee during the time of tremendous growth in the hybrid seed industry. Greg also had a deep level of concern for the Southern Alberta community and was a leader in the development of the annual “Harvest Howler”, an important fund raising event for local community programs and associations. Greg was highly regarded and respected by his colleagues and the industry will miss him.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB., on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

A Funeral Service will be held at the IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 20 Rocky Mountain Blvd. West, Lethbridge, AB., on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 1:00 P.M.

Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

She was predeceased by her husband Bill Valgardson; her parents Charles and Sally Edwards; granddaughter Amber Rae Valgardson; siblings Eldon (Mary) Edwards, Rachel (Melvin) Anderson, Maydell (Dean) Anderson and Ruth Nadine; In-laws Norma (Van) Haslam, Thelma (Cliff) Rawsthorne, LaRue (Alfred) Carter, Howard Valgardson, Garry Valgardson and Patti Valgardson.
Donna was born in Taber, November 8, 1927 to Charles and Sally Russell Edwards. She spent her life in Taber and attended Central School and Taber High School. Donna had a keen mind and a wonderful memory. She won many awards for her performances in poetic competitions and could recite long memorized poems into her later years. She also excelled in gymnastics while in school.  For many years, Donna could turn herself into a “pretzel” that entertained her family. She worked at the Bank of Montreal before marrying Bill Valgardson on July 10, 1948. Her greatest love was her family. Donna devoted her time and energy in creating a warm and wholesome home to nurture her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful homemaker and the best cook. She was loved for her hot crossed buns, her flapper pies, her donut days and memorable Sunday dinners. Her grandchildren always knew there would be treats at Grandma’s house.
Donna enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, knitting, quilting and crocheting and used these skills to bless her family.  There were many dresses made, quilts delivered and baby gifts enjoyed by her selfless acts. She amazed everyone with her creative Halloween and skating costumes. Donna most loved Christmas and birthdays and spent many hours turning these events into magical moments for her family.
Donna had many life long friends that were dear to her and enriched her life. She often spoke of her friends from her school years and the wonderful memories that she enjoyed from that time. She valued her friendships with those from her church associations and her time spent working on genealogy as well. They were happy times for her.
Donna was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many positions in the Church and executed them faithfully. She taught her family of her faith in the Gospel and instilled in her children, a love of our Savior. Her legacy of Faith lives on through her posterity.
Our love and thanks go to the nurses and staff at the Edith Cavell Care Centre for the kind and personal care that they gave to our mother. We express much love and appreciation to Kristine (Ackerman) Jensen and to Lori Derksen for their loving, thoughtful and attentive sweet care that they rendered to our mother and grandmother.
