ELKJAER
July 30, 1920 – August 20, 2016
KAJ MARTIN ELKJAER, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Fairmont Extendicare, on Saturday, August 20th, 2016 at the age of 96
years. He was predeceased by his loving wife Ketty of 73 years in 2015.
Kaj is survived by Liss (Don) Kundich, Kurt (Thelma) Elkjaer, Karin (Don) Fung, Linda (Bob) Copeland, Peter (Janet) Elkjaer, Sonja Elkjar, Darren (Carie) Elkjaer; grandchildren Robert, Marty, Monique, Shane, Stacey, Martin, Kathleen, Michael (deceased), Nigel, Justin, Ryan, Kerri, Scott, Tamara, Krista, Taylor, David, Jennifer, Daniel, Cayla and many great and great great-grandchildren.
Kaj and Ketty met while he was working on a neighbouring farm and their love story began. They married in May 1941 and emigrated from Denmark to Alberta in 1950, settling in Coutts in 1953. Shortly thereafter, they started a successful poultry farm. Mom and Dad were forerunners in organic husbandry. They received a commendation from the provincial and federal government for their consistent high quality of poultry. Dad loved to work. All who knew Kaj recognized his tenacity, work ethic, integrity and willingness to tackle any obstacle.
In 1967, Dad sold his farm and moved his family to Lethbridge. In 1968 and over the next 25 years, Mom and Dad opened their hearts and home to many special needs foster children. During that time, Dad enjoyed fishing, camping and travelling. Dad’s special joy was landscaping and keeping his yard pristine and a beauty to behold. Mom and Dad were pleased to receive “Yard of the Year” award, which was presented by Communities in Bloom.
In later years, Kaj and Ketty enjoyed walking their beloved dogs around Henderson Park, where on their way home had a special bench where they rested before continuing their journey. “The Last Stop Before Home”. We are grateful that the bench where they sat has been memorialized in their honour.
Dad has requested no funeral. So friends, when you are out walking, sit on their bench and behold the beauty before you. Over the years, Mom and Dad treasured their special friendships that lasted their lifetime.
Dad, the journey has been long but now the two of you are together again in your eternal home with our Lord.
