Harm Thomas
1940 – 2016
On December 17, 2016 Harmen Albert Gerrit Marie Thomas, beloved husband of Elly Thomas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous and dignified battle with ALS.
Harm was born on December 28, 1940 in Amsterdam, Holland. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 22 where he met the love of his life, Elly Kramer. They married in 1963. Harm was an ambitious and hardworking provider. He came to Canada with an agricultural degree, but as it was not applicable in Canada, he pursued a career in the automotive sector. This culminated with Harm opening his own business in 1986. He spent the majority of his life on the road running his business, as he loved the freedom of the open highway.
Harm had an inquisitive mind, and combined with his passion for adventure, this took him to many parts of the world. As a land-locked Albertan, he still managed to make his dreams a reality. Harm had an enthusiasm for sailing and eventually purchased a sailboat that provided many adventures on the seas. Later in life Harm moved inland and discovered a love of motorbiking and hiking in the deserts of the U.S.A., Mexico and Spain.
Harm’s greatest accomplishment was how he dealt with the adversity and challenges life presented to him. He stoically overcame each challenge with stubborn determination and poise, rather than acquiesce and give up. Harm’s strength of character and love of family enabled him to thrive, grow and become closer to God.
Everybody loved Harm as he had a generous and kind spirit. He always saw the good in people and had many close friends that came from all walks of life. Harm was always up for a little mischief and we will miss his sense of humour that we saw shine through even in his last days. Harm was involved with the Church and enjoyed his charity work as an active member of the Knights of Columbus’ Council 10547. Along with his loving wife Elly, Harm was involved with Marriage Encounter, which bonded their love. This group of like-minded couples became like family to both Elly and Harm.
Harm welcomed everyone with open arms and always accepted each person for who they were with no judgement. He was a warm, caring and compassionate man who lived life to the fullest. He embraced each new adventure with a zest for life but always returned to the heart of his purpose, home. Harm always gave of himself selflessly to others and expected nothing in return. His warm smile, gentle laugh and welcoming hugs will be missed but never forgotten.
Besides his loving wife of 53 years, Elly, left to honour Harm are his four children Fred (Terri) Thomas, Rob (Cara) Thomas, Monique (Ed) Bailey, Michelle (Rick) Weste; eight beautiful grandchildren: Taylor, Kai, Logan, Nia, Emily, Ethan, Carson and Mataya. He is also survived by his sisters Lotti Burchartz of Pickering, Ontario and Koosje Thomas of Amsterdam, Holland.
A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00pm on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, led by Francis and Cybele Norohna.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30am on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 355 Columbia Blvd West, Lethbridge, AB with Father Kevin Tumback, celebrant.
The ALS Society provided Harm with immense comfort and support. In Harm’s memory, for those that desire, donations are gratefully accepted to the ALS Society of Alberta. Donations may be made online at http://www.alsab.ca or mailed to the ALS Society of Alberta, 7874 10 St. NE, Calgary, AB T2E 8W1.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Eric Wilde, Dr. Elvira Smuts, Rob Bauer with Respiratory Home Care Solutions and the amazing staff of Unit 4C at the Chinook Regional Hospital for their compassion and care throughout Harms final journey.
