SORGARD
JAMES “JAMIE” ELWOOD SORGARD, of Picture Butte, AB, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday, June 16th, 2017 at the age of 66 years.
Jamie was born on November 14, 1950 in Lethbridge, AB and was raised on the family farm in Iron Springs. After attending school in Iron Springs and Picture Butte, he trained at Lethbridge Community College and was a butcher in Picture Butte before starting a dairy on the family farm in 1970. He married his wife Karen in 1979 and they raised their four children on the farm until selling the land and dairy in 1998 after which he and his brother Randy continued to farm near Calgary for another four years. He worked in construction for a time and then returned to his love of farming by working casually driving a truck and doing some custom work for area farmers.
He was a man of tremendous faith with a gentle spirit and wonderful sense of humor. His pride and joy were his family whom he loved deeply. He loved the outdoors, especially time spent camping and fishing when the children were young and later the winter getaways in the tropics. He was an avid gardener as evidenced by the oasis he created on the acreage in Picture Butte.
He is survived by his wife Karen, daughters Kristy (Ryan) Clarke and grandson Noah of Coquitlam, B.C., Shannon (Jason) Wiens, grandson Miloh & granddaughter Chloe of Calgary, AB, son Michael and son Mark (Emily Jankunis) of Picture Butte, brothers Randy (Rhonda) of Cobble Hill, BC, Dale (Jean) of Ottawa, ON, Patrick (Thip) of Thailand and Ted (Anita) of Princeville, B.C. and his mother Mary of West Highlands, Lethbridge.
His quiet courage and strength of spirit will be carried forward by those who knew and loved him.
Thanks to Dr. Lui, Dr. Turner and the staff of Unit 31 at the Foothills Hospital and a special thank you to Dr. Shukkoor from Lethbridge Palliative Care.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Cornerstone E-Free Church of Picture Butte (expansion fund), 440 Crescent Avenue, Picture Butte, AB, T0K 1V0 or the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, 960 – 19 Street S, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 1W5.

WALLEWEIN – JOAN MAUREEN
With love we announce the passing of Joan Maureen Wallewein (nee Godfrey). Born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on August 26, 1929, she spent her early childhood on her father’s homestead in Brightbank, AB. She grew to maturity in Medicine Hat, where she met and married Emil Wallewein in 1949. Joining him on his farm in Scandia, AB. she put all her energies into being a farm wife, an active community member, and a busy mother of four.
The family moved to Rainier, AB in 1968 to operate what became the Oasis Snack Bar and Service. After serving public and friends in a manner unique to herself, she sold the business and retired to Lethbridge AB. where she was an active member of the John Howard Society, the On Our Own group, the Lethbridge Philatelic Society and later as a member of the CNIB bowlers.
Joan was predeceased by her parents Eva and Ken Godfrey, her husband Emil and her granddaughter Megan. She is survived by her brother Allan and his family, her four children: Ken (Marlene), Barry (Barb), Tom, Christine, her grandchildren Brian (Casey) and Charlotte (Adam), and great-granddaughter Amalia.
Her wit, wisdom, and unyielding gratitude for life’s blessings will be cherished always.
We are hoping to hold a memorial service on August 26, her birthday. Plans will be announced at a later date.
