CATHERINE ANN EARL, 53, of Coutts, Alberta died August 3, 2017.

She is survived by her husband Bruce of 35 years, and four children, Tina Rolfe (Tony Rolfe), Gary Earl, Natasha Earl (Sean Orr), and Stephanie Earl, as well as parents, Darrell Crawford (Rita Crawford) and Catherine Bennett (Don Bennett) and sisters Virginia Hartley (Larry Hiller) Verena Beazer (Darren Beazer) and Derra Murray (Tony Murray) and predeceased by a younger brother Stephen Crawford.

Friends are invited to meet the family between 10:00 am and 10:45 am at THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS – 345 3rd St. W, Coutts, AB. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am.

Mr. Fredrick “Fred” Ginther

1961 – 2017

Fredrick John Ginther of Lethbridge, Alberta passed away peacefully at home on July 11, 2017 at the age of 56 years.

Simon Kalau

1932 – 2017

It is with great sadness that the family of Simon Kalau announce his passing on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at the age of 85 years.

Simon was born in Mureiken, Lithuania on April 19, 1932. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1951 and settled in Milk River and then in Stirling, Alberta. He married the love of his life, Elsie Kalau, on February 5, 1955. Simon moved his family from Stirling to Lethbridge in 1967. Simon was a carpenter by trade and worked with a number of contractors on many projects in Lethbridge and area. He worked for a number of years with Kenwood Engineering and Construction. Simon retired at age 65 and kept himself busy building and fixing things for friends and family and looking after his grandchildren. Simon loved to fish, camp, and play cards. Simon will be well remembered for spending hours talking to friends and strangers alike. He loved his family pets, and always enjoyed family celebrations and spending time with friends. Many people turned to Simon for a helping hand and he was always willing to provide what he could to help others out.

Simon was predeceased by his parents Adolf and Martha Kalau. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Kalau; his daughter Ruth Hutchinson (Rod); his son Richard Kalau (Donna); his grandchildren Jason Hutchinson (Tara); Trista Lindsay (Tyler); Robyn Kalau; Sarah Kalau and her fiancée Chris Petty; his great grandchildren Cooper and Addison Lindsay; his sister in law Irma Kalau; and his brother Albin Kalau (Shirley).

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Greidanus and Dr. Boora as well as to the staff at St. Therese who provided such compassionate care to Simon in the last few months of his life.

A Funeral Service will take place at 1:00pm on Monday, August 14, 2017 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th STREET SOUTH, LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA. Interment to follow at the Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge, Alberta.

NEILSON

BLAINE L. NEILSON, beloved husband of the late Marilyn Dudley Neilson, passed away peacefully in Cardston, AB on August 2, 2017 at the age of 94 years.

Blaine was born November 12, 1922 in Magrath, AB to Earl C. & L. Geneva Passey Neilson. He lived all his life in Magrath until after his wife died, then he moved to Cardston for the last thirteen years of his life.

He is survived by his children: Richard L. Neilson, Janice (Richard) Bengry, Kelly (David) McLaughlin; 8 grandchildren: Ryan (Stephanie) Neilson, Ashley (Brian) Rivard, Jeffrey (Amy) Neilson, Jason Bengry, Chad (Carolina) Bengry, Trisha (Jaimie) Peirens, David (Kelsey) Neilson, Douglas (Janelle) Neilson; 23 great-grandchildren: Mason & Merek Neilson; Kyle, Taylor, Lee & Joshua Bengry; Cayden, Caleb, Connor & Casey Bengry; Gabriel, Noah & Thomas Rivard; Keetley, Rowan, Rafe & Everly Neilson; Savannah, Rebecca and Kristian Peirens; Kaitlynn, Brody and Adalynn Neilson; one great-great-grandson Myles Taylor Bengry; sisters-in-law Shirley and Marlene Neilson; brother-in-law Elden Coleman.

Blaine was the last living of the Neilson Family. He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn; daughters Cynthia & Mary Lynn Neilson; his parents Earl & Gen Neilson; his siblings Melva (Norm) Christensen, Merlin Neilson, Kay (Shirley) Neilson, Pearldene (Bert) Jensen, Kenneth (Marlene) Neilson, Robert (Caroline) Neilson; also all of Marilyn’s siblings, Arvilla (Ed) Louthan, Marjorie (Elden) Coleman, Roland (May) Dudley, Eugene (Freda) Dudley, Devere (Lucille) Dudley.

The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Lee Crest in Cardston, for the patience and care that they showed our father this past year. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please donate to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetic Association.

PLAXTON

ELIZABETH ANN PLAXTON, a strong, active Roman Catholic, a loving mother and wife of 51+ years, passed away on July 27, 2017 surrounded by her husband, three sons and their wives. The grandchildren and daughter and husband were able to participate in the Vigil, Funeral Mass and Internment in Kelowna, BC.

RED CROW

JULIA (BERNICE) RED CROW passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, August 7, 2017 at the age of 69 years.

Bernice was born in Cardston, AB on August 9, 1947. She attended St. Mary’s Residential School. While there, she learned about the Catholic church; she was a very spiritual person. She moved to Lethbridge, where she worked numerous jobs and raised her son Darcy. She enjoyed her family. She was a kind, loving, caring and generous person.She loved Bingo and church, where she made many friends.

She is survived by her son Darcy Wayne (Karen) Red Crow; her Brother Rodney (Lavern) First Rider; Special niece and nephews Marjorie, Kevin (Carolyn), Kirk (Bernadine); special Grandchildren Kyle, Tate & Mya. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Bernice was predeceased by her parents Edward Red Crow & Agnes Iron Horn; siblings Burton Red Crow, Horace Red Crow, Edward Red Crow, Albert Red Crow, Wilton Red Crow, Loretta Soop, Katherine Red Crow, Clara Red Crow, Phyllis Red Crow and Melinda Red Crow.

SMITH, Dorothy Elaine (nee Soby)

December 7, 1924 – August 3, 2017

It is with great memories, much love, and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dorothy Elaine Smith at the age of 92 on August 3, 2017 at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre in Claresholm, Alberta. Dorothy was born in Glendale, California to Roy and Margaret Soby. She moved back to Claresholm with her parents at the age of 2. Dorothy attended school and helped with the family store, Soby & Smith. In 1942, she enrolled in Education at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. Upon graduation she returned to Claresholm and began teaching school in Stavely. In July, 1949, she married Henry (Hank) Smith and they raised 2 children, Kirby and Debbie. Dorothy lived the remainder of her life in Claresholm.

Dorothy, or Dot as she was known to her friends, was fond of music, tennis, figure skating, curling, golfing and dancing. She was a faithful member of the Claresholm United Church. She had many close and enduring friendships, nurtured with regular coffee meetings. In early retirement she enjoyed travelling. This included trips to Europe and Asia. Dorothy was always very positive no matter what the circumstances and in line with her Norwegian heritage, very fond of desserts.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Roy and Margaret Soby, her only brother, Gordon Soby and her husband, Hank Smith. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her son, Kirby Smith, daughter-in-law, Katherine Storey Smith, her daughter, Debbie Lozeman, son-in-law Fred Lozeman, and only grandson, Jeremy Lozeman.

A Graveside Service was held Thursday, August 10, 2017, at the Claresholm Cemetery (3800-8 Street West) followed by a Celebration of Dorothy’s Life at the Claresholm United Church (4803-2 Street West, Claresholm). In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre (Box 700, Claresholm, Alberta T0L 0T0).

SOKALSKI

FRANK SOKALSKI of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Janina Sokalski, passed away at the St. Therese Villa, on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the age of 86 years.

He is lovingly remembered by his children and their families; John (Beata), Tamara and Tiffany; Tony (Jola) and Thomas; and Diane (Tony), Nicole (Geoff) and Jessica.

Along with his wife, Frank was predeceased by his infant son.

Frank was a dedicated and loyal employee of the City of Lethbridge, Waterworks Department, for 20 years.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. with Sharon Hagel officiating.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 12:00 Noon, with Father Lukas Drapal celebrating.

Following the Funeral Mass, Frank will be laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery.

EWOUD WESTSTEIJN, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Sophia Weststeijn (nee Marbus), passed away at the Fairmont Extendicare on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at the age of 87 years.

Ewoud was survived by his children: Jan (Barbara) Weststeijn of Paracatu, Brazil, Johan (Milla) Weststeijn of High Point, North Carolina and Arina (Dale) Lewis of Las Vegas, Nevada and 12 grandchildren.
