HOBBS
EILEEN MAY HOBBS passed away peacefully in Edmonton on December 23, 2017. Her loss is deeply felt by brother Douglas Cole (Novia), son Chuck (Domynique Fortin), daughters Dorothy Humphrey (Gregory) and Betty McNaught (Alan); grandsons Matthew Moneypenny-Hobbs (Jaclyn), Timothy Hobbs (Sara), Ryan Humphrey (Ardythe Harder), Patrick Humphrey, and Cole McNaught (Shelley Petersen). She will also be missed by extended family and dear friends.
Eileen was predeceased by her parents George and Dorothy Cole, loving husband and soulmate Harcourt, brother Art and nephew Jim, and grandson William McNaught.
Eileen was born in Dodsland, Saskatchewan on May 21, 1926. She grew up on the family farm near Ruthilda where she developed her lifetime ideals—loyalty to family and community, curiosity and love of learning, the rewards of hard work and ‘making do’ through the depression, respect for nature, and the value of deep and lasting relationships.
A good scholar, Eileen graduated from the Saskatoon City Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. Her nursing career included hospitals in Saskatoon, Vernon, BC and Lethbridge. She proudly worked as part of a medical team, making long-term friendships and attending reunions with her classmates. She used her nursing skills throughout her life to help others.
Eileen and Harcourt were married in Saskatoon in August 1952. They lived in Vauxhall where they developed a close-knit community of friends and where their three children were born. They moved to Lethbridge in 1959 when Harcourt was transferred to the Research Station. Here they raised their family, lifelong friendships were formed and the door was always open to visitors. Eileen was an accomplished homemaker, cook and baker, excelling at growing roses, gardening and preserving. Later, three spouses and then six grandsons and their partners were welcomed into the family.
Eileen loved to be involved and actively participated in McKillop United Church, curling, square dancing, bridge and card clubs, the Legion Revelers, Lethbridge Seniors Centre, Alberta Senior Games, and Grandview Condo activities. Eileen and Harcourt travelled extensively. She was a proud founding member and teacher of the Lethbridge Hard of Hearing Society, and a tireless advocate for those with hearing impairment.
A Celebration of Eileen’s Life will be held at MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH – 2329 15 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Trevor Potter officiating. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (chha.ca) are appreciated.
