HANKE

On January 8, 2018, SHIRLEY HANKE passed away surrounded by her loved ones after a brief battle with cancer.

Shirley was born on April 26, 1943 in Lethbridge, Alberta. She grew up in the Enchant area. In 1959, she married Bill Holoboff, and together they had four children. Although they moved frequently, she spent her happiest years living in Kimberley, British Columbia.

Shirley devoted her life to looking after her family, both blood and acquired. She was proud of her work on the Cominco Gardens, but no matter where she worked she was a dedicated and loyal employee. Shirley also had other skills and talents, such as editing the Elkford Bugle in the ‘70s or throwing herself in to painting in the ‘80s, working on art projects like the backdrop in the Golden Wildlife Museum in British Columbia. Her friends and family cherish her saw blades and cream cans. Other talents included cake decorating and baking, and many of her grandkids have learned to cook her homemade noodles. Shirley loved to sing and dance and she especially loved karaoke. She was into softball and bowling, and she was an avid Calgary Flames fan.

Shirley is survived by her four children: Brenda (Neil) Secrist, Janet Cronquist (Antonio Long Time Squirrel), Alexander Holoboff and Shiela Ann (the late Bruce) Dyck; her grandchildren: Neil Secrist (Shanna Collins) and their children Brandon, Brytnee, Isabelle and Scarlette; Wes (Sara) Secrist and their children Janea and Cullen; Billi Joe (Howie) Flemming and her children Mackenzie, Aurora and Destiny; Jessica (Chris) Holzapfel and their children Dean, Mathew and Livia; Amy Cronquist (Ryan Boban); Salina Thien and her children Swaylon, Lovaida and Isaac; William Holoboff; Virginia Holoboff; Alex Holoboff; Alicia (Mike) Hirsche and their children Kansis, Jamie, Ryder and Sadie; Richelle Merrick; one brother Melvin Speager and one sister Audrey Orsten, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father Alexander Speager and her mother Janet (McNiven) Speager, as well as one granddaughter Jennifer Holoboff, two husbands Bill Holoboff and John Hanke, and one brother Stanley Speager.

She touched so many lives, like those of her best friends Donna Keyes and Jim Gillespie. Some others that were special to her were her granddaughter-in-law Jenny Secrist, granddaughter Jen and great-granddaughter Savanna Delyea. If we have missed anyone, please know that you may not be on paper but you are forever in Shirley’s heart.

All who knew and loved her are invited to join the family for a Celebration of her Life at the PICTURE BUTTE SENIORS CENTRE, 120 – 4 Street North, Picture Butte, Alberta on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. Please bring your favourite memories of Shirley to share with the family.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Mom, please plant a tree, take a hike in the mountains, or donate to an animal charity of your choice.
