Freda Gatzky

1941 – 2018

Freda Gatzky of Lethbridge, formerly of Edmonton, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Edith Cavell Care Centre at the age of 76 years. Freda was born in the rolling hills of southern Saskatchewan, in the Whiska Creek area on a farm, on a snowy November 2, 1941 evening. Her grandmother delivered her and she grew up going to school at Neville. She enjoyed sports, especially playing ball and hockey and she usually won a ribbon or two during track and field days. She attended Neville United Church, sang in the CGIT choir and was a member of our local Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT). Freda graduated grade 12 in 1960 and started her 48 year telephone career in Regina, and it was during this time she worked for Sask Tel for four and a half years as an operator and junior supervisor. Getting tired of the large city she decided to spread her wings and venture out west. Freda went to Peace River, Alberta where she was hired immediately as a mobile and radio operator. She found this particular job very interesting as it was a part of the oilfield connection. 30 years were spent in Peace River as an operator, trainer and relief manager/supervisor and she particularly loved the north for the forest parks and nature. It was during her stay in Peace River that she began selling real estate part time and she also began curling which she enjoyed very much. When A.G.T telephones shut down in Peace River, she transferred to Grande Prairie where she worked for about 7 years when the company changed to Telus. Eventually the Grande Prairie location shut down, and it was during that time that Freda moved to Edmonton and worked as a relay operator for the deaf and hard of hearing. Then when they shut down Edmonton, she had the opportunity to move to New Westminster, but her health started to fail so that is when she decided to retire. Freda loved her weekend trips to Jasper Hot Springs, which was her favorite get away. She was also very fond of Palm Springs, and Phoenix during winter holidays. Freda moved with the help of a special nephew Ed Gatzky to Lethbridge which was a huge relief to get out of the big city. She enjoyed Lethbridge and resided there until her retirement. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Doug was born in Dinsmore, Saskatchewan on January 8, 1934. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter (Bentley) and Gertrude Gibson, and his sister, Joyce Gibson.

Doug was raised in Saskatchewan and attended school in Lloydminster, where he excelled in football, hockey, and baseball. After moving back to Lloydminster in 1963, Doug started a job with AGT (Telus) as a Communications Technician, working his way up to Central Office Manager, and remained in that capacity until his retirement in 1993. He developed a passion and proficiency for golf, won several championships, and enjoyed the game well into his late seventies. Travel was important in Doug’s life after retirement, and he spent time in Arizona, Mexico, and Europe. A vacation to his ancestral home of Ireland had special meaning to him.

Doug was a talented musician, and he learned to play several instruments by ear. He was an accomplished harmonica player, and played drums, harmonica, guitar, and sang lead and backup vocals in a country band in Lloydminster. After retirement, Doug was a member of several musical groups and vocal ensembles. He also developed a love for karaoke, and entertained many friends at the Senior’s Centre in Lethbridge.

Doug is survived by two sons, Kevin Gibson of Edmonton and Don Gibson of Calgary, a daughter Cheryl Preston of Regina, grandsons Rick and Ryan Preston of Edmonton and Josh Gibson of Calgary, granddaughters Trish Robins of Langley, Erin Gibson of Calgary, great-grandsons Hunter Preston and Porter and Carson Robins, and loving companion Shirley Sewell of Lethbridge.

Maurice “Moe” Martin

1933 – 2018

Mr. Maurice “Moe” Martin of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Betty Martin, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the age of 84 years. Born to fly but learned to run at the Warner Highschool, Moe excelled due to the fact his dad was the principal (there was some retaliation from classmates haha). Moe moved on to Edmonton to get his (Bac) which he said stood for “Bounced At Christmas Degree.” At this point, being in the air was the place for Dad, so he joined the RCAF for a 5 year stint. Moe met his future wife Betty in a bowling alley and eventually they had the Martin Brothers (Mitch/Murray). Out of the military, Pa took up being a spray pilot, convincing Betty that spraying was much safer than being a stunt pilot (air shows). As we know, Moe became one of Time Airs number one airplane pilots and Moe’s knowledge was shared with all above and beyond. Mom and Dad retired to Desert Hot Springs where they enjoyed 12 years… they were very accommodating to all who visited for a stint in the 3 day hide a bed… A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am, Monday, January 29, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Final Debriefing to follow at the 702 Wing Lethbridge Airport. Open to all, Captain’s Treat!
