1933 – 2018
Jean (Gurney) Passey, age 84, of Magrath, Alberta, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2018 after a long decline due to dementia. Jean was born on July 6, 1933 in Lethbridge, Alberta, to Albert Glen Gurney and Mary Nancy (Bingham) Gurney. She grew up in Magrath where she attended school, worked and made lifelong friends. Jean, who was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, married Ronald L. Passey on October 28, 1953. She and Ron raised a family while residing in Lethbridge, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat and Camrose. When Ron retired they built a lovely home in Magrath that became a gathering place for their children and grandchildren for many years. She loved her children and spent her life in dedicated service to them, her friends and others. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and was a wonderful cook. Her cookie jar was always full and her home neat and tidy.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Max Glen Gurney, and by two grandchildren, Daniel Spackman and Allison (Spackman) Morris. Jean is survived by her husband Ron, four children and spouses: daughter, Donna and Kent Spackman, of Tualatin, Oregon; son, Keith and Jeanine Passey, of Magrath, Alberta; daughter, Larene and Doug Zimmer, of Daysland, Alberta; and daughter Karen and Marc Payne, of Lehi, Utah. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held on Friday, June 1st, 2018, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – GARDEN PLACE CHAPEL (170 North Centre Street, Magrath, Alberta) at 11:00 a.m. after which Jean will be laid to rest in the Magrath Cemetery. Family and friends may meet the family between 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service.

Daniel “Danny” Riopel
1979 – 2018
Mr. Daniel “Danny” Riopel of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Louise Riopel and loving father to Carter and Taya, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at the age of 39 years. Danny was born on Feb 16, 1979 to Cherie and Dave Riopel (deceased) in Edmonton and lived his early life at the family acreage near Vimy, Alberta. Danny excelled in athletics and was best known for pitching “no-hitter” baseball games and achieving a black belt in karate. Danny graduated high school from Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, SK and furthered his formal education at SAIT in Calgary, ultimately obtaining his Red Seal as a professional welder. He was first introduced to his “Mama”, Louise Fairhurst, in the summer of 1997 but they didn’t begin dating until years later. Danny moved to Lethbridge from Calgary where Louise was attending post-secondary school and they were married in September 2005. Danny worked as a Senior Project Coordinator at Charlton & Hill Ltd. but also pursued his own entrepreneurial interests in his spare time. Together with their children, they enjoyed many “ultimate” family adventures including hiking, camping, and overseas travel. In addition to his “unit”, he is survived, loved, and will always be remembered by his mother Cherie Musselwhite (John), brother Bob (Mardell), and many friends and family members. Danny will be forever remembered for his dedication to his family and friends, “go get ‘em” spirit, and keen sense of adventure. He will be dearly missed. A Celebration of Danny’s Life will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4th Street South, Lethbridge, AB., with Reverend James Grunden, officiating. Cremation entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels. For those who wish, donations to Danny’s children will be accepted during the service.

Alice Eileen Saunders (nee Laurie), passed away peacefully at the age of 88 in Taber on Monday, May 14, 2018.

Alice is survived by her children Thomas (Wendy) Saunders of Victoria, British Columbia, Marilynne (David) MacDonald of Calgary, Michael (April) Saunders of Taber, Cynthia Saunders of High River, Allyson (David) Cichy of Calgary, Gregory (Karina) Saunders of Highland, Utah, Ruthanne (Ken) Holst of Taber and by thirty grandchildren and seventy one great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Pauline Laurie, Bev Laurie, Arlie Laurie, Shirley Andrews, Jeri Saunders and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Gordon Stanley Saunders, her son Gordon William James Saunders, her parents James and Jessie (nee MacPherson) Laurie and all her siblings.
Alice was born on December 29, 1929 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, the sixth of nine children born to Jessie and James Laurie. She was raised in Ladner, British Columbia and moved to Taber at age seventeen. On June 16, 1948 she married Gordon Saunders in Taber and raised eight cildren.
Alice was active in her church and community. She shared her many talents freely and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
