Kathryn Elizabeth Hurlburt

1928 – 2018

Kathryn Elizabeth Hurlburt was born at the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta, to Hannah and Orval Hurlburt. She grew up in Milk River and after completing high school, she went to work for Taylor Pearson & Carson in Lethbridge until she had earned enough money to enroll at the University of Alberta where she received a Bachelor of Divinity degree and later a Master of Arts degree as she pursued her goal of becoming a minister in the United Church of Canada. It was while she served in this capacity at South Minster United Church in Lethbridge, that she decided to explore her interest in spiritual guidance but now in a hospital setting. She spent a number of years at Lamont General Hospital and later the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital as chaplain. Always striving to become better educated, Kathryn made the decision to become a faith based clinical psychologist and obtained her Doctorate in Psychology at the University of Oregon. Until her retirement in 1993, Kathryn operated a very busy private practice in Calgary.

Kathryn was always eager to learn new things. She was a talented artist and many friends and family members are proud owners of her work. Kathryn was fiercely independent and accomplished and was part of a wide circle of likeminded friends. Theirs was a very close and caring group who embraced life with exuberance and great joy.

Kathryn was predeceased by her parents, Hannah and Orval; her brother Tom Hurlburt of Sacramento, California, her twin brother Ken Hurlburt of Fort Macleod; and her niece Shirley Ingleston of Sacramento California.

WOODS

LLOYD PATRICK WOODS, beloved husband of the late Mabel Emma Woods, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on November 7, 2018, at the age of 88 years.

Lloyd was born in Longford Mills, Ontario in 1930 and, at the age of 17, he came to Alberta to find a job in the oilpatch. He worked for various drilling companies and worked all the jobs on the rig, quickly advancing to the position of Driller. In 1957, while working near Indian Head, Saskatchewan, he met a young widow Mabel Brack (nee Fruin) and her four young children. Together, they moved to Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan in 1959 and Calgary, Alberta in 1961 where Lloyd continued to work in the oilpatch. In 1970, Lloyd started J&L Rock Bit Services and moved to Brooks, Alberta in 1977 to be closer to the clientele. Lloyd retired in 1985 and moved to Lethbridge, Alberta with his daughter in 2005.

Lloyd was known for the force of his personality; he was generous, mischievous, short-tempered, hilarious, tactless, and always big-hearted. He loved children and animals, especially teasing them. He was always the first person to offer to help someone and vehemently stood-up for the underdog. His late wife lovingly called him a “diamond in the rough”. In his younger days he loved hunting and fishing and always had a beloved Labrador retriever at his side.

Left to mourn his absence are his daughter Shelley Woods (Darryle Thiessen) of Lethbridge; his step-children Jim (Christine) Brack of Brooks, Mavis Walyuchow of Medicine Hat and Richard (Linda) Brack of Calgary; ten grand-children and numerous great-grandchildren. Lloyd was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Mabel Woods, his step-son Marvin Brack, his parents Thomas and Sarah Woods, and his four older siblings.

His family would like to express deep appreciation to all of the staff at St. Therese Villas for their kind care. In the final years of his life, dementia took much from him but his indomitable spirit remained until the end.

As per Lloyd’s wishes, there will be no service.
