Nicola (Nick) Mucciarone

December 16, 1932

– December 23 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nicola (Nick) Mucciarone of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Rosina. He passed peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital with his family by his side on Sunday, December 23, 2018, at 86 years of age.

Dad was raised in the village of Sessano, Provincia Campobasso, Italy. Growing up, Dad lived a true Italian farmer’s life raising pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens. At a young age, Dad’s green thumb had already begun, tending to the family’s large garden. Dad helped his Uncle Luigi with various tasks and enjoyed spending time with his Nonno, Sabatino, learning about the bible. Dad also enjoyed ringing the church bells for mass.

At the age of 19, Dad decided it was time to leave his homeland and go to Canada. His Uncle Sam and Aunty Elisa made papers for him to come to Lethbridge. On May 16, 1952, Dad began his journey across ocean and land, arriving in Lethbridge June 3, 1952. A few days later Dad started working for the CPR and remained a faithful employee for nearly 41 years.

In 1952, Dad first saw the love of his life, Rosina, and set out to make her his wife. On October 25, 1958, the dream came true with Mom and Dad celebrating their marriage vows at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. This dream has lasted over sixty years, each year filled with the blessings of family and friends.

Dad was a man of many passions. He had an unparalleled talent for gardening, which was showcased through the meticulous garden and yard he maintained each year. His competitive spirit was also displayed through the various card games he played with his family and friends. Since family was such an important part of his life, he frequently took his family to many places around the world, particularly Hawaii, Disneyland, and Las Vegas. Alongside Mom, Dad was his grandchildren’s number one fan. No matter the event, from a music recital to a basketball game, Dad was always in the crowd cheering them on. Dad also enjoyed a good meal, especially those shared with family and friends at his dinner table. Whether it was one of Mom’s delicious homemade meals or take-out from one of his favourite local restaurants, Dad celebrated life through the meals that he shared. Each day, Dad remained devoted to his faith, dedicating time to prayer and acts of service. His steadfast love for his family and friends was rooted in his love of Jesus.

Dad will be dearly missed by his family and friends, but the many memories that were made will last a lifetime.

Nick was predeceased by his parents Giovanni and Assunta Mucciarone of Italy, his brother Antonio Mucciarone and brother in-law Graziano Altieri of Pennsylvania and his grandson James Snodgrass of Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Nick is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rosina; Son Rino (Luann) Mucciarone of Lethbridge Alberta and their children Cassandra (fiancé Brett), Ryan (girlfriend Phoebe) and Mathew; Daughter Rita (Howard) Snodgrass of Medicine Hat Alberta and their children Jaimie (Iain) Purcell and Joel Snodgrass.

Nick is also survived by his step Mom Anna Mucciarone of Italy, brother Mario Mucciarone of Italy, sister Palmina Altieri of Pennsylvania, sister Rosetta Mucciarone of Italy, sister in-law Antonietta Mucciarone of Pennsylvania and numerous nieces and nephews. He also had special affection for his father and mother in-law, John and Filomena D’Agnone, and all his brothers and sister’s in-law and children.

Vigil Rites (Prayers) will be held at 7:00PM, on Friday, December 28, 2018, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00AM, on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at the ST. BASIL’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604-13 Street North, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Father Kevin Tumback celebrant. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation, at 204, 2323-32 Avenue NE, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 6Z3.

Elaine Viergutz

1935 – 2018

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, and Grandmother, Elaine Viergutz, on Wednesday, December 26th, 2018 at the age of 83 years following a short battle with cancer. Mom was born in Wheatstone, Sask., on July 10, 1935 to John and Sophie Stratulat. The youngest of five children, Elaine grew up on the family farm adjacent to Dahinda, Sask. After school, Mom trained with the Grey Nun’s in Regina as a Nurses Aid. In 1954 she married the love of her life Mel, and they relocated to Lethbridge in 1956. Mom worked at the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital, then the Haig Clinic until their first child was born in 1960. Mom then stayed at home and raised their four children for the next fifteen years. Mom gave us all a wonderful childhood with arts, crafts and music for all the different seasons and holidays. Mom had a work ethic like no other, and there was always plenty of delicious food and baking for all and hand sewn clothing she made for us. Mom was an avid bowler in both mixed and ladies’ leagues over the years. She was an excellent gardener and loved her beautiful yard at their home on Lakeshore Road. In 1975 Mom went back to nursing at the Family Medical Centre and worked there until she retired in 1995. In retirement Mom and Dad travelled and made many friends and had great adventures via their membership in the Southern Alberta Antique & Classic Auto Club. After losing her darling husband, Mom moved to the View in January and quickly pitched in helping with the library and social activities and made many new friendships in her short time there. Elaine is survived by her son Kevin (Barb), granddaughter Kimberly Ellen (David), great-granddaughter Leslie Ellen, grandson Matthew (Sarah) and great granddaughter Katherine; son Dale (Jan) and granddaughters Taneal and Olivia; daughter Sharon Walsh (Steve); daughter Wendy Fitzsimmons and grandson Ty. She’s also survived by her sister Phyllis Harrison, brothers Steve (Pearl), Art (special friend Marion Greenway), and Phillip (Jean) Stratulat, brother in law Mervin (Faye) Viergutz, sisters in law Julia Viergutz and Lucille Duke, and many nieces and nephews. Elaine was predeceased by her beloved husband Melvin, parents John and Sophie Stratulat, in laws Christina and Leo Viergutz, brother in laws Fred Harrison, Geoff Bywater, Rob Viergutz, Ted Duke and Jake Wanner, and sisters in law Joyce Stratulat, Barbara Bywater, Alvira Beedle, and Marge Wanner. A private family interment will be held. Relatives and friends are invited to a come and go Celebration of Mom’s Life to be held between 2:00PM and 4:00PM on Friday, December 28, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, AB. Special thanks from our family to Mom’s Palliative Care team led by Dr. Elvira Smuts and the wonderful staff of the St. Michaels’ Palliative Care team. The family respectfully requests no flowers. If you would like to make a donation in mom’s name, please consider donating to the Palliative Care Chinook Regional Hospital and the St. Michaels’s Health Centre, Palliative Care unit in Lethbridge.
