Brian Walker

1944 – 2020

Following a lengthy hospital stay and the most courageous battle ever fought, Brian John Walker peacefully ended his fight surrounded by the love of his family on February 25 in the ICU unit of Foothills Medical Center. Left to cherish his memory are his soul mate, best friend and wife of 52 years, Trudy Walker; his daughter Christy (Bruce) Martens and children Brendan (Natalie) Martens and Kyle (Sara) Martens; son Kevin (Sherry) Walker, children Jesse Walker, Chautelle Haberman and Shyloh Haberman; four siblings Stuart (Gail) Walker, Lynne O’Brien, Terry Walker, Kelly Fraser and their families. Loved by him also were his mother-in-law, Kay Jensen; his sister-in-law Kathy (Tim) Barlow; brother-in-law Trevor (Kate) Stott and their families as well as Trudy’s step-siblings, his many cousins and their families. Born on October 11, 1944 in Calgary, Brian moved to Lethbridge as a child. Early on he discovered his passion for music, winning Music Festival awards for singing both locally and provincially. This led to his life-long love for vocal performance and he sang in Lethbridge Musical Theatre, was a member of the Bridge City Barbershop Chorus, the LSCO Golden Mile Singers, and most recently participated in “Titanic, The Musical” playing Mr. Strauss. An avid sports fan, baseball, hockey and basketball brought him great joy. Baseball spring training in Florida and Arizona became annual events and it was difficult to beat his knowledge of baseball trivia. He was an avid Lethbridge Hurricanes fan and tried to attend all the home games. Even though he joked he had enrolled in education because the registration line was the shortest, there was no question that Brian was one of the lucky people who earned a living doing what he loved. He taught in Calgary, and Delta, BC and spent 33 years with Lethbridge School Division in teaching and administrative roles at Gilbert Paterson, Wilson, LCI and Lakeview, as well as the district office. Following his retirement in 2001, he joined the U of L Faculty of Education where he taught and mentored student teachers. Brian genuinely loved people, especially children. Always humble, he had an awesome wit and no matter what was able to inspire, support, and tease those he cared about, worked with, and taught. Puttering in his beautifully manicured yard brought him endless joy as did the wonderful trips he and Trudy took to Europe, the United States and Canadian coast with Trudy and their family and friends. Please join in a Celebration of Brian’s Life at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH, 1011 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Reverend Trevor Potter, officiating. The family hopes in lieu of flowers you might consider a donation to: Brian Walker – Lethbridge Hurricanes Educational Scholarship – In Trust Donations can be made at any provincial ATB Financial branch, Account #0722921900610745179. As the donations to this trust account will remain anonymous to the family, and tax receipts will not be issued, we would like to thank everyone who chose to donate to something so close to Brian’s heart.
