KWAN

May 4, 1958 – Dec. 24, 2020

JONI MAY KWAN was the first child born to Wayne and Elsie Kwan. She went to school through grade 12 in Lethbridge and maintained many good friends from her school days throughout her life.

In the early 80’s, she went to college in Calgary to learn to be a travel consultant and returned to Lethbridge to begin her career at All World Travel. She was one of those very lucky few that truly loved her chosen profession. She loved to travel, loved her clients and loved the people she worked with. She spent more than thirty years sending people to every corner of the world.

In 1989, she married her husband Jack Houtekamer and soon after, started their little family. We always felt it was the most magical time in our lives. Joni loved her children dearly and was fiercely proud of them. She endured a difficult time as she neared the end but maintained a clean, glad happiness and because of her strength and courage, we were able to continue to enjoy many happy occasions and visits until the end.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Jack Houtekamer, daughter Sara Houtekamer (Gerrit) and son Adam Houtekamer (Kate), sister Lorraine (Kayton) Chow and her children, Stephanie, and Chris. She is also survived by her uncle Jimmy Lee and stepmothers Sherrie Kwan and Maria Kwan, as well as numerous cousins across Alberta and British Columbia.

Joni was predeceased by her brother Archie Kwan, who she dearly loved and cared for.

We want to express our most sincere gratitude to the staff at Legacy Lodge. Joni loved them like family and they treated her the same. It was a great comfort to us all, knowing she was so well cared for. Further, we want to show our gratitude to the ALS Society of Alberta. They were a tremendous support to Joni and to all of us.

Following Joni’s wishes and due to current COVID-19 regulations, no funeral service will be held.

RACH

It is with heavy hearts that the family of ADOLF RACH, brother, dad, grandfather uncle and friend, announce his unexpected passing at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Christmas Day at the age of 79 years from non-covid complications.

He is survived by his brother Stan, and his sister Christa (Rick) Lastuka; son Jack Rach, and step daughter Janet Fehr (Herman) and step- granddaughter Kristi (Kris) Brown, grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Teresa, parents, Ernst and Maria Rach and his brothers Anton and Walter.

Adolf was born in Kleinhilde, Kreis, Marienburg, Hannover on June 19, 1941. He came to Canada, Quebec Harbour on the Arosa Sun with his parents, brother and sister on June 18, 1956 – one day before his 16th birthday. After settling in Coaldale, and working in the beet field for a season, Adolf was employed by Alberta Transportation for 35 years and followed through for another five years with Volker Stevin. For more than 40 years, Adolf helped keep our roadways safe. Adolf enjoyed life and had a wonderful sense of humour. He kept everyone on their toes with his quick wit. He enjoyed his coffee with friends and the occasional beer or two and always lightened up the room with his charm and conversation. He touched all of those who spent time with him. He was a compassionate, thoughtful and honourable man who loved his family. His quiet courage, strength of spirit, creativity and sense of humour will be carried forward by those who knew and loved him.

After some health complications, he left his independent living and moved into Linden View Care Centre in Taber and then relocated with much delight to Fairmont Extendicare. He could not say enough about the quality and care received at both centres. A special heartfelt thanks to the staff and wonderful caregivers who were part of Adolf’s daily anticipation.

Adolf was a man of deep faith. When he was no longer able to attend Mass, he would watch it on television, as well as on his iPad. He enjoyed “attending” mass anywhere in the world, his favourite places being Poland and Germany.

Due to COVID 19 restrictions there will be a private Funeral Mass on Thursday, December 31st., at 10 AM. The Mass will be live-streamed. To watch, a link will be available on Adolf’s obituary at the Cornerstone website.

SCOTTER

Marjory Scotter of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late George Scotter, passed away December 23, 2020 at the age of 99.

Marj is survived by her son Jack (Barbara) Scotter, granddaughter Jody Scotter of Edmonton, grandson Wade (Susan) Scotter of Calgary, great grandchildren Zachary Boras, Whitney Boras and Mia Scotter. She is also survived by her sister Dora Marose and brothers Everett, Ray and Ron Tinsley.

Marj grew up without parents to guide her so she was always determined that this would not happen to her family. Her main focus was on her son and grandchildren and she was always so excited to spend time with Jody and Wade. They fondly remember Sunday breakfasts, Sunday roast beef dinners and the many wonderful camping trips with her.

She was the best and most amazing mother and grandmother that anyone could ever hope for.

When illness forced her husband out of the work force for an extended period she went to business school and learned shorthand and typing. She supported the family working as a secretary in the insurance industry and later went on to become a self-taught accountant. Her first retirement was interrupted in 1981 when she went to work part time at her son’s business. She permanently retired in 1993. She was a past member of the Lethbridge Curling Club and Henderson Lake Golf Course.

At her request, there will be no funeral service. Cremation and a private family ceremony will take place at a later date.
