JEAN “BERNICE” COLEMAN

April 20, 1923 – January 18, 2021

Bernice passed away peacefully on Monday, January 18, 2021 at the age of 97, at Good Samaritan Garden Vista, Magrath, AB.

Bernice was born in a tiny home in Magrath, Alberta, the youngest child of Charles Heber Dudley and Bernice Barton Taylor. Her father later built a large home next-door where Bernice lived for the rest of her life until moving to Good Sams three years ago.

She recalled many summers growing up spent at the family farm out by the river, riding on a horse and buggy between town and the farm. She was amazed that she lived to see all of the technological advances we have now.

From horse and buggy to the moon.

After taking an accounting course she worked for the Town of Magrath and the Magrath Irrigation District for many years.

Bernice married Blaine Anderson, and had two children Barbara and Roger. After Blaine died due to a farming accident, she married Gordon Coleman and gained two step children Jude and Jimmy.

Bernice enjoyed travelling with family and friends. Among others, Hawaii was one of her favourite places, where she spent a few months a year for several years. Many family and friends enjoyed staying with her in Hawaii when they could.

She excelled at everything she did, from cooking, keeping an immaculate home, any type of sewing handiwork, to babysitting her great-grandchildren.

But if you needed her on a Tuesday, you’d find her at the Seniors Centre quilting and visiting for hours.

Bernice knew what it meant to be a good friend, whether she’d known you for years or just met you on a bus in Hawaii, she learned everything about you and most likely found out you had a friend in common. She corresponded regularly with friends made on her travels.

Her grand and great grandchildren were her joy, she loved being in their company, and they all loved being spoiled by grandma.

Bernice had and shared a strong testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The reunion is large and wonderful this week.

The family would like to thank Charlotte Anderson, Grethe Anderson, and also the staff at Good Sams in Magrath for their wonderful care of grandma the last few years.

Bernice was predeceased by her parents, siblings, both husbands, her children Barbara and Roger, a grandson, and a few neices and nephews.

She is survived by step children, Jude (Brian) Sheer, James (Dixie) Coleman, and their children. Son in law, Marc (Barbara- deceased) Heggie, and their children- Randal Heggie, Marc Heggie, Carrie (Will) Thompson, Michael (Lisa) Heggie, Josh (Shannon) Heggie, and special great grandchildren, Corey, Abby, Nate, Madi, Owen, Johnny, Kayden, and Elle.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, a Private Graveside Service will be held at the Magrath Memorial Cemetery.

DOROTHY JOAN STROEVE, beloved wife of Ben Stroeve, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at the age of 89 years.

Besides her husband Ben, Dorothy is survived by her brother Bob (Joan), Ben’s brothers, sisters, in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy met the love of her life in 1971 and they were married on November 10, 1973.

Dorothy was known for her love of shopping, especially with her friend Mary and sister-in-law Elizabeth, as well as collecting knick knacks and mowing her lawn, which was her pride and joy. She was a long time CWL member and liked to visit the elderly and shut ins.

She was a real farm wife, bringing lunch out to the field, helping with beet harvest and driving the combine at harvest time. Dorothy was always so proud of her “Bernie” when they went to all the Charolais cattle shows.

Ben and Dorothy made many annual trips to New Mexico until declining health kept them close to home. Dorothy’s love of all things south western was evident in their home as she proudly displayed her many treasures.
