EILEEN PONECH

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Eileen Ponech, 85, of Penticton, British Columbia.

Eileen was born to Wilbert and Leora Ness in 1935. In her early school days, she excelled at playing the violin, with her favourite song being “Hot Canary” and also being sports-minded, she later enjoyed playing basketball. She continued in sports throughout her life and became an avid curler and golfer. While relaxing at home, with a cup of coffee, there was usually a news channel on TV, keeping her up-to-date on current politics. Not far from reach was always a crossword puzzle or two, as she liked to keep her brain active. Her favourite motto was, “If you don’t use it, you lose it!”

Eileen met Fred in 1952 and they were married the next year in Lethbridge, Alberta. Together they raised their two children: Janis and Jim. Through their lives, they took the opportunity to live in Lethbridge, Calgary, Creston, Hillcrest, Summerland and Penticton, making the most of their times. They worked, farmed, owned a grocery store, and volunteered for their favourite service clubs.

Her career as a computer operator began at University of Calgary, then on to Aquitaine Oil, and Banff Oil. She continued to work for Thorne-Riddell after moving back to Lethbridge. Her love of golf led to a position at the Lethbridge Country Club, and she soon became the Golf Course Manager, where she remained until she retired. Eileen and Fred decided that Hillcrest would be the perfect retirement location. They made many friends there and Eileen began helping out at Hillcrest Miners Club. The west began to call again, so they moved to the Okanagan where Eileen enjoyed managing the Eagles Club for many years.

Eileen always loved to cook and cater, and she had a deep love for animals, especially her horses, Penny, Blue, Lady and Deena, her Pomeranian, Carmelita, and family dogs, Bear and Molly. She was an adventurer at farming for a few years on property near Creston, BC, in the mid-seventies. There were many hilarious memories of planting too many pumpkins and raising too many chickens, which also turned out to be prolific layers.

Eileen is survived by her loving husband Fred, her daughter Jan Smith (Steve), her daughter-in-law Patti Ponech, her brothers, Stan Ness (Noreen), Ed Ness (Reni), Denny Ness (Irene), Marvin Ness, and her sisters, Donna Boughen, Bev LeBlanc (Chuck), her cherished grandchildren, Taylor Bailey (Cherlyn), Ryan Bailey (Lindy), Erin Jantz (Neil), Kristen Kirkendall (Daron), and her treasured great grandchildren: Dorian, Vayda, Ava, Brigitte and Emmett Bailey, Karis and Gavin Jantz, Leah Kirkendall, many dear nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Sadly, Eileen was predeceased by her beloved son, Jim Ponech, her parents Wilbert and Leora Ness, her sisters Betty Tremblay, Lou Lawson and Lillian Renfrow.

The family has entrusted Providence Funeral Homes, Summerland, BC with the arrangements. A Celebration of Life will be planned in the early summer of 2022.
