Dr. Peter Maclean

1953 – 2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing on March 22,2022 of our father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend Peter MacLean.

Peter was born and raised in Lethbridge where he attended school. After graduating from LCI he moved to Edmonton to study dentistry. Peter graduated from dentistry in 1978 and established a very successful business in Coaldale until his retirement in 2015.

Peter married Paddy Richardson in 1984 and together they raised 3 children, Emily Ian and Davis. He was such a proud father and grandfather.

After retirement Peter was able to pursue his many and varied interests. His most important mission was being a wonderful father and grandfather. He always wanted to give his kids as many life experiences as possible. He took them on numerous trips, Europe, camping, skiing, golfing, fishing, boating and introduced them to the finest gas station food every chance he got. Peter loved being a grandfather. He made sure he spent as much time as possible with the grandchildren, Oliver, Evelyn and Ozzie. There were zoo trips, ski trips, sleepovers and constant play and joking. And there were “Incidents”. Peter was gleeful on the occasion of an incident.

Peter was so lucky to enjoy many fishing trips to the Pacific Coast with his dad Laurie and his father-in-law Ted Richardson as well as his sons Ian and Davis and numerous friends. They were epic expeditions that always resulted in enough fish for the whole family for at least a year.

Peter loved his summers in WATERTON, spending time with his grandparents and cousins as a kid and as an adult cooking for family and hosting large parties for family and friends. He loved to feed the masses-the more the better. His “need to feed” was legendary.

Palm Springs was another of Pete’s favorite places. He spent several winter months in the sunshine there, golfing and hosting his many and varied friends and loved ones.

Peter will be remembered for his crazy sense of humour, his generosity and his desire to live his life to the fullest.

His passing is such a loss for his daughter Emily Scott (Aaron), his sons Ian MacLean (partner Alyssa Weinkauf), and Davis MacLean (Kiara); his sisters Carol Cruickshank (David), Sue MacLean (Leah Parker) and Kathryn Roberts (Nathan) as well as his sister-in-law Rosie MacLean; grandchildren Oliver and Evelyn Scott and Ozzie MacLean; his best friend and mother of his children Paddy MacLean; in laws Ted and Iris Richardson; stepmother Judy MacLean; aunt Elinor Lucas; his lifelong friend and business partner Lyal Sakamoto as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Peter was predeceased by his father Lawrence MacLean; his mother June MacLean; and his brother Patrick MacLean

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a Viewing from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

Martin, Corey

July 4, 1948 – March 20, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mr. Corey John Martin announce his peaceful passing at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at the age of 73 years. Corey was born in Red Deer, AB., and raised by his parents in Blackfalds, AB., along with his three younger siblings. After graduating high school, Corey started working with AGT at the young age of 17. While with AGT he attended SAIT and obtained his Communications Technician designation. He continued on with AGT/Telus until 1993. The years following and up to his retirement he worked as a consultant in the Telecommunications field, eventually starting his own company “Rafter M5 Network Consulting Ltd.” Sports were a very significant part of Corey’s life. This was clearly evident in his devotion to his beloved Montreal Canadiens. Corey was a gifted athlete, most notably on the ice playing hockey. However, there really wasn’t a sport that he did not excel at. At age 40, he decided to take up team roping which became his way of life for quite a few years. The last few years he spent as much time on the golf course as possible. He passed on his passion of sports to his kids and grandkids. He so very much enjoyed watching them all at their games and activities and was their #1 fan! Corey loved to travel whether it was a summertime vacation to the Okanagan or a winter escape to a sunny resort. One of his most favourite destinations was Maui which he was able to visit numerous times in his life. Corey also had a passion for music and loved to sing. A tune was always playing in the background no matter where or what he was doing. He had an uncanny knack for remembering not only the name of the artist but the year the song came out and where he was during that particular time! Retirement gave Corey time to work on many projects including working in his yard and flower garden, his backyard pond, his crafting and of course, time to pour his heart and soul into all his wine barrel water fountains that he made for many people. Anyone who knew Corey, knew that his family was the most important thing to him, that he would give you the shirt off of his back – no questions asked, and always had a story, joke or prank ready to make you laugh! Many a stray (animal or person) were rescued on his many travels along the highway. The best word to describe him aside from DAD or POPPA would be “FRIEND”. He made a friend no matter where he went and has accumulated them all over the world. Corey always had a smile on his face and made an impact on everyone he met. His personality was larger than life. Left to cherish his incredible memory are his three children, Angela (Blake) Shipley, Laine (Gord) Williamson and Kyle (Natasha) Martin; grandchildren, Dallyn and Makena Schreiner and their dad, Clint Schreiner, Logan Martin, Rhyan Williamson and Linkon Reesor-Shipley; siblings, Laurie (Ron) Short, Tom (Orena) Martin and Wendy (Al) McKee; his ex-wife and mother of his children, Lynn Martin; ex-wife, Carolyn Martin; faithful furry companions, Doogie, Lion King and Luckie as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Jean and Homer Martin. A Celebration of Corey’s life will be held at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Rd S.E., Medicine Hat on Monday, March 28, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating.  If you so choose, we encourage you to wear a Montreal Canadiens jersey or their team colours to honour Corey. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Corey’s name may be made directly to the SPCA, 55 Southwest Drive, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 8E8 or to St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice, 156 – 3 Street N.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A5M1. Honoured to serve the family is Cook Southland Funeral Chapel

Marie Mehrer

1948 – 2022

In Lethbridge, Alberta, early on the morning of 20 March, 2022, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend Marie Galoria (Hughes) Mehrer went on before us to be with her Saviour, leaving behind Eldon Mehrer, her loving husband of forty-eight years.

She is survived by her siblings, Roy Hughes, Kenneth Hughes, Robert Hughes, Alice Hughes-Welch, Bessie (Hughes) Holmes, Margaret (Hughes) Phelps, Helen Hughes, and Shirley Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Eula (Thompson) Hughes, her siblings: Ernest Hughes, Charlie Hughes, James Hughes, Betty (Hughes) Eveleth, and twin grandsons Jadon and Mason Whitman.

Born 21 April, 1948 in Harrisburg, Oregon to Gordon and Eula (Thompson) Hughes, her passing is mourned by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Lydia (Michael Jr.) Hostetler; Andreas (Trista), Emery, Damaris, and Merlin, Terry (Laura) Mehrer; Denton; Grayden, Royden (Laura); Bentley, and Brendan (Alexis); Kinsley, Larry (Mona Baker) Mehrer; Carsen, Randyl (Tricia) Mehrer; Alyssa; Sara, Kacey, and Kegan, Gloria (John) Whitman; Jasmyne, Braxton, and Hailey, Danny (Gabriela) Mehrer; Eldon, Mia, and Danika, Jenny (Daryl) Weber; Aisling, Hudson, Siobhan, and Ruari, Krystal Mehrer; Kenneth, Greyson, and Kiersten, Martha Mehrer, Grace Mehrer (Trevor Sherwick); Waylon, and Bonnita (Peter) Wurz; Landon. She is also remembered by many others whom she loved as her own.

Marie was a devoted follower of Christ and placed great importance on loving others as she was loved by Him. This was felt profoundly by all who were privileged to meet her, but none so much as her own family. As a young girl she was welcomed into the homes of the two wonderful women that her children were privileged to call grandmothers. Minerva Kropf and Josie (Reeder Baker) Schlabach set incredible examples for her in raising a family who knew that their mother’s love for them was rooted in the love of God. As a result of her belief in Christ as her Lord and Saviour, she was blessed to meet her husband through church connections. When they married six months later, on 25 May, 1973, their home became a place for friends, family, and her delicious pies, which Eldon learned were not made ‘as easy as pie’.

As a mother of eleven, she worked hard to keep hungry tummies fed, keeping a garden for most of her married life. She enjoyed seeing her rows of jars ready for the table, especially her pickles, which were her most popular canned food. Her giving heart was well-known; her grand- and great-grandchildren were gifted with lovingly-made blankets and family and friends alike were presented with cleverly-made kitchen hand towels for their oven-door handles. Of all her accomplishments and abilities, her love matters most. She loved well.

She was a safe place for many, always ready to listen, and could be found in recent years, catching up on her reading time with her Bible on her lap. She loved the ocean and her lighthouse collection held pride of place in her home. She also loved the mountains and we all have many childhood memories of hiking, having winter picnics, feeding deer leftover popcorn, and skipping rocks on Waterton Lake.

Her family misses her deeply, taking joy in the hope of seeing her beautiful smile again, while also wondering who we are without her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Diabetes Canada, 14803 Yellowhead Trail, Edmonton, AB T5L 3C4.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 5:00pm and 6:30pm on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPELS, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

All are welcome to attend a funeral service at 2:00pm on Monday, March 28, 2022 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPELS, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Burial will follow in the Stirling Mennonite Cemetery.
