Helena Friesen

1939 – 2022

Helena Dyck Friesen, beloved wife of the late Abe Friesen, passed away peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Saviour, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at the age of 82 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 – 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, April 8, 2022 between 4:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Evangelical Free Church, 5431 – 48 Avenue, Taber on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.

Helena will be lovingly remembered by her children Neil (Debbie) Friesen of Taber, Maria Friesen of Picture Butte, Abe (Jo Ann) Friesen of Cranford, Helen (Tony) Whelan of Tucson, Arizona, Tina Friesen of Taber, Peter Friesen of Taber and Henry Friesen of Medicine Hat; grandchildren Chantella Friesen (Scott Westwood), Kyle (Jayme) Friesen, Blaire (Andrea) Friesen, Amy (Aaron) Apfelbaum, Brandy Johnston, Corey Johnston, Krista Whelan, Carli Whelan, Rachel Friesen, Michael Friesen and Brendan Friesen; great grandchildren Hunter, Jonas, Sydney, Juniper, Noah and Sophie; brothers David Fehr, Abe (Kathy) Fehr and by numerous nieces and nephews who called her grandma as she welcomed them with open arms.
She was predeceased by her husband Abraham, her parents Abram and Maria Fehr and siblings Peter Fehr and Maria Banman.
Helena was born on August 5, 1939 at Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. She resided there with parents and later with her husband where they had seven children. In 1974 Helena and Abe immigrated with their family to Canada and settled in Taber where she resided until her passing.
Helena enjoyed doing charity work and playing games with family especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed going to church and praying for her family, for everyone she knew and even those she didn’t, but still cared for.
Helena will be dearly missed by all.

Brent Gies

1963 – 2022

WO (ret’d) Brent Albert Gies of Lethbridge, AB passed suddenly at home on March 30, 2022 at the age of 58.

A Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Friday, April 8, 2022 at the VIMY RIDGE ARMORY MILITARY BASE – Officers Mess located at 337 Stubb Ross Road Lethbridge AB. with Padre Luke Watson officiating. The family requests that those that attend please wear masks to protect those family members who are immune compromised. GOSTICK

GORDON GOSTICK, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Joan Gostick, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Park Meadows Good Samaritans, on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at the age of 92 years.

Besides his wife Joan, Gordon is survived by his son Adrian.

He was predeceased by his daughter Nicola.

HAMILTON

HAZEL JOSEPHINE HAMILTON (nee Powell), who was predeceased by her husband Thomas, and son Benjamin Joseph, passed away at St. Michaels Health Center on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at the age of 92 years.

She is the loving mother of Jessie Hamilton of Calgary; Bonnie (Ron) Bennett of Vulcan; Thomas (Laurette) Hamilton of Red Deer; Mary Ann Pyska of Lethbridge; Christina Gilbert of Edmonton and James (Connie) Hamilton of Lethbridge. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and their spouses as well as 27 great grandchildren.

She was born in Lethbridge on May 17, 1929, and married Thomas Hamilton on Jan 7, 1949 in Lethbridge. Hazel and Tom lived in Lethbridge until 1966. They lived in Calgary for a short time and then moved to Jasper where they lived until they retired in 1988. They returned to Lethbridge and lived here until their passing. She was an active member of both the Jasper and Lethbridge Legions and enjoyed her time and companionship with her many friends. Her family and her extended family were of utmost importance to her and were her focus in her retirement years.

She will be greatly missed by all her friends and family.

Friends may pay respects to the family on Saturday, April 9, 2022 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home, 703 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 11, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Kathryn Hoyt

1962 – 2022

Miss Kathryn Betty Hoyt of Lethbridge, beloved mother, grandmother and dear friend to so many, passed away peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at the age of 62 years.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter Emily Derksen; two sons Adam Derksen (Caylee) and Nigel Derksen; grandchildren Bryan and Amara McPherson, Caden Jensen; sister Sue (Bill) Cox; brother John (Betty Ann) Hoyt; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sister Norma Harley; and parents John and Betty Hoyt.

A private family Memorial Service will be held at Southminster United Church.

Ellen King

1918 – 2022

It is with intense sadness that the family of Ellen King announces her passing on April 4, 2022. Ellen was in her 105th year. Ellen lived an exceptional life, beloved by her family and friends.

Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Jack King; parents Harris May and Sarah May; parents-in-law John and May King; brothers Stanley May, Gordon May, and Les May; and sister Alice Kemshead.

She is survived by her sons, Brian (Ruth) King, Ken (Jenny) King, and Bill (Charmaine) King; grandchildren Michael King (Megan Miller), Jeff (Amanda) King, Lindsay (Justin Caughey) King-Caughey, Jill (Dylan Carter) King, Alex King (Tiffany Bates) and Chelsea (Patrick Wensveen) King; great-grandchildren Liam, Joel and Etta King; Loralai and Holden Caughey; and Sienna and Cailey Carter; sister-in-law Mavis May; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Magnus “Mag” Nelson

1933 – 2022

It is with great sadness the family of Mag Nelson announce his passing in Lethbridge, on Thursday March 24, 2022 at the age of 88 years.

Mag was born in Ormiston, Saskatchewan on July 25, 1933, the son of Nicholai Nelson and Clara (Berglund). He spent his early life in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan which is also the birthplace of all of his children. He began his work life with the CPR as a claims agent. In the early 1960’s he became a broker with Richardson Securities and in 1971 he transferred to Lethbridge, Alberta and continued his career until his retirement at an early age of 56 in 1989.

Mag was an avid golfer throughout his life until recently. He made many friends in the golfing community in Saskatchewan and Alberta. His early retirement enabled him to pursue his passion of golfing with the love of his life and soul mate Lorraine. Together they enjoyed their shared love of the game and many excursions in their second joy of travelling in their motorhome, especially spending winters in Arizona.

He is survived by his five children, Jamie (Don), Jeff (Bonnie), Laurie (Baki), Scott, Mike and stepdaughter Mary Ellen (Rob). He also leaves behind his cherished grandsons Elijah, Nigel, Jeremy, Christopher, Spencer, Nathan, and Elliot; five great grandchildren, Natalie, Gabrielle, Evan, Carter, and Aditi; and also the Kemp children, Michaela, Daniel, and Jenna Lorraine. Left to mourn are his Special Companion who he was blessed to meet later in life Shirley Huzil, his sister Irene, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Mag was predeceased by his wives Diane, Lorraine and Cecile; siblings Ida, Wilma, Emil, and Nora; and nieces Sharon and Sheila.

VANDERLINDEN

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, NELLIE ELAINE BALLA VANDERLINDEN, of Coaldale, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at St. Michael’s Health Centre, on Monday, April 4, 2022, at the age of 94 years.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Art, her three children, Doug (Madeline) Balla of Lethbridge, Bonnie Palmer of Surrey, BC and Brenda Balla (Alex Stillwell) of Brockville, ON. and her precious granddaughter, Taylor Palmer. She is survived by one sister, Mary (Abe) Martens, two sisters-in-law, Irma and Edna Neufeldt and two brothers-in-law, Les and Willie Balla. Also surviving her are Art’s four children, Mary, Janie, Peter, Johnnie and their families, along with numerous nieces and nephews,

She was predeceased by her first husband, Joe Balla, in 1981. Also predeceasing her were three brothers and their spouses, John (Verna) Neufeldt, Jake (Anne) Neufeldt and Isaac (Eleanor) Neufeldt; two brothers, Ab and Peter Neufeldt, as well as her sister and brother-in-law, Annie (Edwin) Boehr, brother-in-law, Steve Balla, sister-in-law Louise Balla and son-in law, Brian Palmer.

Elaine worked at Eatons, in Lethbridge, for over 35 years and met many friends there that remained close to the end. With her friends, she loved to play cards, scrabble, and Mahjong.

A Visitation will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Sunday, April 10, 2022 from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

A Funeral Service will be held at SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH, 1011 – 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, April 11, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Taylor Croissant officiating, assisted by The Venerable Ken Wells. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in the family plot.
