Berg, Loreen (Wold)
August 29, 1931 – May 19, 2022
Loreen (Wold) Berg passed away peacefully on May 19, 2022 at Cedar Creek Adaptacare Facility surrounded by family. She was born on August 29, 1931 in Sexsmith, AB to Olaf and Mary Wold. Mom was a twin in a large family of 11 children. She was raised on a farm and grew up close to grandparents, cousins and other family.
She attended Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute. It was here she responded to an ad to care for five children on the Anker & Dagny Berg farm in Claresholm while Dagny was convalescing which would lead to meeting a handsome Orlan Berg. They were married on July 8, 1953 and had five daughters. Besides working on the farm and raising five daughters she entertained many people throughout the years at her table. She was a fabulous cook and baker and was well known for her buns and cinnamon buns. She ran many meals out to the field during harvest and would invite several bachelors and friends to our table for meals especially if they were alone for holidays. She worked at WCCHS as a caretaker and in the cafeteria where she was well loved by many students. She also enjoyed her time with Townsend Drugs and often reminisced about her days working in the drugstore.
Mom was a long term member of Peace Lutheran Church. She had a strong faith in God and a servant heart, always giving selflessly to others. She and Dad loved to sing in the choir and for many events such as weddings and funerals. She volunteered, helped raise money and was President at the Claresholm Auxiliary. She regularly canvassed for Heart & Stroke and the Diabetes Assn, was a volunteer with the call button program for seniors, and participated in many Terry Fox walks.
In retirement Mom remained active and enjoyed camping, curling, golfing, gardening, playing dice and games with good friends and walking. She truly had a green thumb and could make anything grow.
Mom and Dad drove across Canada many times to visit their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren in Nova Scotia. They also travelled to Alaska, a trip to Europe, and went on many camping outings to the mountains and throughout the US.
She oh so loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling them whenever she could. Her son-in-laws were each special and became like sons to her. She put up with their teasing and could give it back just as well especially as dementia took hold in later years. She never lost her sense of humour or her memory of who we all were. We are so blessed and thankful that our parents were so loving, kind, giving and instilled these values in us.
Lovingly remembered and forever in our hearts by her daughters: Cheryl Berg, Wendy (Gordon) Frank, Debbie (Bruce) Rathbun, Janice (Gord) Foxcroft, Brenda (Lindsay) Bell; her grandchildren Dylana (Dustin) Pretty, Trina (Mark) Pypers, Jill (Michael) Hooke, Greg (Erica) Frank, Marina Rathbun, Brad (Chelsea) Rathbun, Dave (Angie) Rathbun, Michael Rathbun, Mitch and Riley Foxcroft; great grandchildren: Olivia Pretty, Joshua Pypers, Eli & Wyatt Hooke, Eliesha, Natalie & Brendan Frank, Caspian Doak, Rory, Astrid & Rhys Rathbun, Alex & Claire Rathbun, Alina Foxcroft; her sister-in-laws Marlene (Jack) Thompson & Bernice (Per) Sakstad and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by her husband Orlan and all 10 brothers & sisters – Olive, Ida, Eveyln, Doris, Lennie, Norman, Clarice, Lorna, Gordon, & Alden.
Loreen’s Celebration of life will be held at 2:00 P.M on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Peace Lutheran Church, 4304 – 2nd St West, Claresholm with Pastor Donna Alm officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Loreen’s name may be made to Willow Creek Continuing Care

COSLOVI
LUCIANO COSLOVI, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Lidia Coslovi for 74 years, passed away peacefully at Extendicare on Saturday May 14th at the age of 92 years.
Born in 1930 in Capodistria Italy, now Slovenia, Luciano came to Canada in 1957 with his wife Lidia and their son Giuliano.
Upon arriving in Canada, Luciano worked and lived on a farm before settling in Lethbridge. He began a career with Canadian Natural Gas in 1961, went full time in 1967 and retired in 1990. His job took him all over southern Alberta and if you ever rode with him on the highway, he would often say I worked on a gas line there or at a farmhouse there. It seemed like there was no place he hadn’t been before.
Luciano worked hard to improve his English to allow him to pursue a full-time position with the gas company instead of being seasonal. His hard work paid off, rewarding him with a full-time position. Luciano worked his way up to becoming a locator and having his own truck. Those who knew Luciano knew he was a very hard worker and proud of doing a good job. He was proud of his award for 20 years accident-free driving.
Being outdoors and in the mountains was a happy place for Luciano and Lidia and many weekends were spent camping and fishing for trout at Beaver Mines and Police Lake with their grandson and friends. He had a few good bear stories from stealing wine to a giant tooth mark left in the not so tasty soap. They eventually desired a spot to call their own and purchased an acreage at Duck Lake in 1981, building a log cabin and drilling a well for running water. Luciano and Lidia forged many lifetime friendships with those who also loved going to Duck Lake and enjoyed a good meal, laughter, and of course homemade wine.
Luciano was an active and proud member of the Knights of Columbus joining their ranks in 1996 and receiving a LIFE MEMBERSHIP in November of 2021. He served many breakfasts in the basement of St. Patrick’s church where he was also a long-time member.
Luciano is survived by his wife Lidia, son Giuliano (Dawna) their son Dean. Also fondly remembered by his grandson Jade and his daughter Sara.

SAWADA
Caroline Hukiko (nee Higa) Sawada passed away on February 22, 2022 at the Chinook Regional Hospital. To commemorate Carol’s 89 years, a Celebration of Life with be held Saturday, May 28th 2022 at the Lethbridge City Hall Foyer. Program begins at 1:30 pm with reception to follow. Parking is available south of the building and on-street in front.
Born on a farm near Hardieville, Alberta to Shinei and Uta (Asato) Higa on November 19, 1932, Carol was the ninth child but first daughter and was followed by three daughters and two sons. Her large family shaped Carol’s life and she always held family close and dear to her heart. The importance of community and a strong work ethic instilled by her parents made Carol a valuable and cherished member of all the communities she lived in. In November 1939, Carol accompanied her father to Okinawa to see his ailing mother. They stayed for six months. Always a proud Canadian, she also held strong to her Okinawan roots through the Lethbridge Okinawa Cultural Society.
In 1955, the new graduate from Galt School of Nursing married the newly- graduated University of Alberta doctor, Kamio Sawada. They began their life together in Calgary, followed by moves to Quesnel, BC and Arborfield, Saskatchewan with both working until the first son, Barry arrived and Carol became a full-time mom. Randy was born 20 months later. The family moved to Taber, Alberta in 1960 where the next two sons, Gordon and Darren were born and where the family spent the next 27 years.
Carol became a valuable member of many community activities especially with the Knox United church and Taber Minor Hockey, and returned to nursing once the boys were older. Although Carol found it extremely difficult to say good-bye to her many Taber friends, in 1987 Kam, Carol and Darren moved to Vernon, BC and they became avid golfers at Spallumcheen Golf Club and skiers on Silver Star. Again, Carol threw herself into nursing, the United Church and the local JCCA and developed a deep friendship with a group of ladies that added so much to her life. She remained an active life-long member of her Galt Nursing alumni.
The next wonderful event in Carol and Kamio’s life started in 1989 when their first grandchild, Kayla was born followed by Jordan, Mackenzie and Justan and baking became a much needed past-time. Carol’s family and friends rallied around her in 1999 when her beloved Kamio passed unexpectedly. As with many events in her life, Carol drew on her inner strength to carry on. She continued golfing, skiing, visiting with family and travelling.
Carol was a great cook and baker, being efficient and having a wide-range of techniques but both were always out of necessity and never a hobby. She used her skills to bake for community events throughout her life as her baked goods were always sought out. Carol was also a super organizer for fund-raising meals and catering to church and community events. One hobby she pursued was quilting – special quilts for her newborn grandchildren, family members and a wonderful community quilt that was done for a fund-raiser. She was known for her joy of walking all her life. Carol travelled with friends / family or with her youngest son Darren, including trips to Okinawa, Japan, across Canada, Australia, Thailand, Israel, Cuba, Caribbean and Alaska cruises and New York.
Over the years, Carol would face the passing of her Higa brothers and dear in- laws; George and Yoshiko (Kohashigawa), Harry and Jessie (Lauder), Jim and Helen (Nishimazuru), Tom, Francis and Sue (Ohno), Sam and Ricki (Jomori), Jack and Victor, brothers-in-law Seiko Miyashiro and Tom Miyanaga. Her Sawada family, parents Kahei and Kane; and Linda and Jim McLaren, Cheiko and Bill Sturley.
Health challenges started to impact Carol and in 2016 she once again returned to southern Alberta, this time to Lethbridge where she could get increasing support and care from family. Always with a deep inner strength, compassion for others and warm smile, Carol would embrace life until her passing.
Celebrating her life and legacy are her four grandchildren, four sons, Gordon’s partner Kathy Thomson, second husband Dennis Seeley, siblings and their spouses; Larry and Mary (Horio) Higa, Geri Miyashiro, Jeff and Royce (Brower) Higa, Eileen Miyanaga, Judy and Tad Mukuda, sisters-in law Amy (Sakumoto) Higa, Shirley (Miyagawa ) Higa; the Sawada families; Kinko and Bert Bandola, Jim and Norma (Robertson), Daiyo and Soly (Cruz Rivera) and over forty dearly loved Higa and Sawada nieces and nephews and the next generations too numerous to count.
With Carol’s love of geography and song, our wish for her is that her next journey be full of new sights and beautiful songs to sing.
Carol’s family is very appreciative of the excellent care provided by the Good Samaritan West Highland Centre. If so desired, charitable donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories: alzheimer.ca/ab/en/contact.
