Berg, Loreen (Wold)
August 29, 1931 – May 19, 2022
Loreen (Wold) Berg passed away peacefully on May 19, 2022 at Cedar Creek Adaptacare Facility surrounded by family. She was born on August 29, 1931 in Sexsmith, AB to Olaf and Mary Wold. Mom was a twin in a large family of 11 children. She was raised on a farm and grew up close to grandparents, cousins and other family.
She attended Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute. It was here she responded to an ad to care for five children on the Anker & Dagny Berg farm in Claresholm while Dagny was convalescing which would lead to meeting a handsome Orlan Berg. They were married on July 8, 1953 and had five daughters. Besides working on the farm and raising five daughters she entertained many people throughout the years at her table. She was a fabulous cook and baker and was well known for her buns and cinnamon buns. She ran many meals out to the field during harvest and would invite several bachelors and friends to our table for meals especially if they were alone for holidays. She worked at WCCHS as a caretaker and in the cafeteria where she was well loved by many students. She also enjoyed her time with Townsend Drugs and often reminisced about her days working in the drugstore.
Mom was a long term member of Peace Lutheran Church. She had a strong faith in God and a servant heart, always giving selflessly to others. She and Dad loved to sing in the choir and for many events such as weddings and funerals. She volunteered, helped raise money and was President at the Claresholm Auxiliary. She regularly canvassed for Heart & Stroke and the Diabetes Assn, was a volunteer with the call button program for seniors, and participated in many Terry Fox walks.
In retirement Mom remained active and enjoyed camping, curling, golfing, gardening, playing dice and games with good friends and walking. She truly had a green thumb and could make anything grow.
Mom and Dad drove across Canada many times to visit their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren in Nova Scotia. They also travelled to Alaska, a trip to Europe, and went on many camping outings to the mountains and throughout the US.
She oh so loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling them whenever she could. Her son-in-laws were each special and became like sons to her. She put up with their teasing and could give it back just as well especially as dementia took hold in later years. She never lost her sense of humour or her memory of who we all were. We are so blessed and thankful that our parents were so loving, kind, giving and instilled these values in us.
Lovingly remembered and forever in our hearts by her daughters: Cheryl Berg, Wendy (Gordon) Frank, Debbie (Bruce) Rathbun, Janice (Gord) Foxcroft, Brenda (Lindsay) Bell; her grandchildren Dylana (Dustin) Pretty, Trina (Mark) Pypers, Jill (Michael) Hooke, Greg (Erica) Frank, Marina Rathbun, Brad (Chelsea) Rathbun, Dave (Angie) Rathbun, Michael Rathbun, Mitch and Riley Foxcroft; great grandchildren: Olivia Pretty, Joshua Pypers, Eli & Wyatt Hooke, Eliesha, Natalie & Brendan Frank, Caspian Doak, Rory, Astrid & Rhys Rathbun, Alex & Claire Rathbun, Alina Foxcroft; her sister-in-laws Marlene (Jack) Thompson & Bernice (Per) Sakstad and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by her husband Orlan and all 10 brothers & sisters – Olive, Ida, Eveyln, Doris, Lennie, Norman, Clarice, Lorna, Gordon, & Alden.
Loreen’s Celebration of life will be held at 2:00 P.M on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Peace Lutheran Church, 4304 – 2nd St West, Claresholm with Pastor Donna Alm officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Loreen’s name may be made to Willow Creek Continuing Care Box 700 Claresholm, AB T0L 0T0, Alzheimers Society 1202-2 Ave S #40, Lethbridge, AB T1J 0E3, or the charity of one’s choice.

PARKER
With immense sorrow but gentle relief, we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, IRENE PARKER (nee Greenslade) of Lethbridge, AB, beloved wife of the late Thomas “Tom” Maxwell Parker, at Legacy Lodge at the grand age of 95 years.
Irene is lovingly remembered by her children, Jerry (Pat) Parker of Black Diamond, AB, Les (Kay) Parker of Tsawwassen, BC and Trish (Ric) Wallace of Lethbridge, grandchildren, Taryn and Brent (Rose) Parker, Todd Parker, Cynthia (Darwin Hanna), Camille and Candis (Mark Podlasly) Callison, Tyler (Katelyn) and Liam Wallace, great- grandchildren, Eleanor Parker, Lauren (Robert Allen) Wolfe, Shesley Callison-Hanna (Nathan Skubovius), Matthew Robinson, Freya and Kora Podlasly. Also left to cherish her memory are her sister-in-law, Sally Jones of Shelton, WA, brother-in-law, Frank Parker and sister-in-law, Kathe Parker, both of Fort Nelson, BC, as well as many Greenslade and Parker Clan nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband, Irene was predeceased by parents, William and Irene Greenslade, infant sister Dorothy, brothers Roy (Marion), Billy, Lloyd (Mary), Hugh (Pearl, Jean), Charlie (Florence, Betty-Ann), Tom (Terry), Ivor (Ruth), Jim (Marg), and Graham Greenslade, her beloved Uncle Walt (Ida) Greenslade, infant great-grandson Luke Robinson, many Parker, Dolan, McLean, Meeres and Callison in-laws as well as Greenslade and Parker Clan nephews and nieces.
Irene was born on July 14, 1926, in Hanna, AB with her twin brother Ivor and was the only girl raised with her large family in Roselynn, AB. Life was hard on the prairie in those early years where their family survived on farming and selling produce from their market garden. The family would see six brothers sign up and serve in WWII with RAF pilot Roy the only one not to make it home after being shot down over southern Holland in 1942. Their family suffered the loss of brother Billy in a farm accident then her mother passed away, also in 1942. Irene was left to help her father care for her younger brothers until graduation from high school, when she started working at the RBC in Hanna.
In 1945 her best friend Carrie introduced her to her brother, Tom Parker, who had just returned from serving in wartime Europe. Love bloomed and they were married in August of 1946. Unfortunately, with bank rules of the day, she had to resign from her job after she married. Jerry was born, and in 1949, they made their way to join other Parker family on the Alaska Hwy. at Fort Nelson, BC where jobs were plenty. Les was born and by this time, Tom and Irene had established themselves owning service stations with cafés that she managed. After Trish was born, and once they sold the Esso service station, Irene worked as a postal clerk for a short time then as a bookkeeper for brother-in-law, Frank Dolan. In the 70s she worked in the finance office of the Fort Nelson General Hospital until she retired in 1988. They lived on a few properties over the years but eventually built their home on an acreage where they raised horses and occasionally chickens, ducks and geese.
After Tom and Irene retired, they fulfilled her desire to move south and to the milder climate of the Southern Okanagan (Oliver, Penticton and Vernon) where they enjoyed all that life had to offer in warm summers, mild winters, golf and an abundance of fruit and vegetables.
After almost six years in Vernon and due to Tom’s health, they moved to Lethbridge to be closer to Trish and her family. In the years after Tom’s passing in 2011, Irene enjoyed living at Black Rock Terrace then eventually at Legacy Lodge where she resided until her recent passing.
Irene was very active personally and in the communities she lived. She was a founding and life-time member of the Order of the Royal Purple in Fort Nelson and contributed countless hours for many years to catering events and creating crafts for sales in teas and bazaars. Irene was a legendary ball player on 1st base on their ladies’ teams over the years and loved to curl with her girlfriends in the winters. In her retirement years and everywhere she lived, she enjoyed walking, fitness classes and the many friendships she made. Irene was an active parent member of the Fort Nelson Figure Skating Club in the years Trish skated, supporting all efforts to raise money and produce ice carnivals.
From her years managing the cafes, Irene became an amazing cook and baker and was known within our families for her turkey and roast beef dinners, and delicious homemade dinner and cinnamon buns. Her gardens and flowerbeds on the acreage were luscious and productive and she was kept busy every fall canning, preserving, and picking wild berries.
Those long winter months provided ample opportunity for her many talents in crocheting, hooking rugs, quilting, sewing and whichever craft she took a mind to learn. Irene had always wanted to learn to paint and finally had the opportunity in her time with Recreation Therapy at Legacy Lodge. She also loved playing cards and enjoyed playing “500” with Tom and her Parker in-laws.
Irene enjoyed travelling with our family and friends to many places including Nevada, Mexico, all over BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Ontario, the Maritimes, Arizona, California, but especially memorable was their adventure to Holland for the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation celebrations with Tom. There, she was also able to visit the grave of her dear older brother, Roy.
Although admittedly Irene couldn’t carry a tune “to save my soul”, she loved music, thoroughly enjoyed the efforts of others and was an especially good dancer. In her later years, Irene would often clap to music, real or imaginary.
You could always count on Irene to look her best with her hair done and fashionable clothes, especially when she was out of the house. In the remoteness of the north, she made good use of the Sears Catalogue and any opportunity to head to the cities. Irene enjoyed shopping, especially in later years when she could afford nicer things and travelled or lived closer to bigger centres.
Irene loved spending time with our families and was always game for whatever adventure we planned. She lovingly supported her grandchildren in their various sport and musical endeavours.
Irene will be remembered for her beautiful smile and sunny disposition, kind and friendly nature and her generous and forgiving spirit. She had an amazingly long and well-lived life and will be dearly missed.
If desired, donations in memory of Irene would be welcome to her favourite pastimes she enjoyed in recent years, New West Theatre at http://www.newwesttheatre.com or The Lethbridge Handicapped Riding Association, 24-205015 Hwy 512, Lethbridge County, AB T1J 5N8.
A Celebration of Irene’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825-32nd Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Monday, May 30, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. with Pat Siedlecki officiating.
The service will be live-streamed and can be accessed via her obituary on the Cornerstone website.
Irene will be laid to rest with Tom in the military section of Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge, AB.

SHELSON
RICHARD SHELSON, beloved husband of Dorothy Shelson of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at the age of 70 years.
In addition to his loving wife of 37 years, he is survived by his two sons, Patrick and Wayne, and his brother and sisters; Beth Bailey, Kevin Shelson, and Barb Fulton.
Richard was born to his parents Winnifred and William Shelson in Windsor, Ontario on Feb 1st, 1952. In early 1981, he accepted a job in Lethbridge, Alberta with Alberta Mental Health Services, and moved across the country from Montreal, Quebec. There he met Dorothy in Lethbridge early in 1982, and got married on August 18, 1984.
Richard served the community in his role at Alberta Mental Health for 28 years, eventually retiring in 2009 as part of Senior Management of Mental Health for the Chinook Health Region. But retirement wasn’t fully in the cards; he wished to continue to helping people as he had when he was a counsellor, before moving into management. He picked up work at several private counselling practices, returning to what he loved; helping people in need. His work within the Social Work community took him around North America, travelling to conferences, sitting on boards, writing university exam standards, and as a Sessional Professor at the University of Lethbridge, teaching in the Social Work department.
Outside of work, Richard was extremely active in many community groups, such as the Church Choir and Music Ministry, Wood Turners Guild, Lethbridge Running Club, the Knights of Columbus Council 1490, where he served as the Grand Knight and in the 4th Degree, and in many other groups, councils, boards, and teams that he was part of in his 39 years in the Lethbridge Community. He was widely known for being an incredibly social individual, his infectious laughter, and was lovingly referred to as a “Social Butterfly” by Dorothy. He never turned down an opportunity to talk to someone new, and was never afraid to speak up on an issue or for what he believed in.
The family would to extend a special and extremely heartfelt Thank You to the doctors and nurses at the Chinook Regional Hospital units 4C and 5A for their kindness, laughter, and hard work. They became like a second family to both Richard and Dorothy during their time there.
Richard was well loved by the community and will be missed by far more people than he could ever know (and that’s a lot of people). In lieu of flowers or well-wishing gifts, please donate to the Mental Health Foundation Alberta (mentalhealthfoundation.ca), a cause that was near and dear to his heart.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. BASIL’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge, AB, on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 1:30 P.M. with Father Derek Remus celebrating. The Mass will be livestreamed and may be accessed via Richard’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.
