KAETHLER, Rudy

September 18, 1937 – Zaporozhe, Ukraine

June 2, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Rudy Kaethler of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at the age of 84 years.

Rudy’s passion for making things led him to work as an engineer on large construction projects, often in the oil patch. He was on the forefront of computerizing operations wherever he worked, from the 60s onward. He bought an Apple II for his sons when they were young, triggering their lifelong passion for computing.

He loved to travel, taking the camping trailer through the forests of BC and much of the western USA. The importance of family also took him to Russia and Germany to connect with family long kept apart. He was also an avid cyclist and did many tours in Canada and the USA. He cycled the Golden triangle, the Highwood pass, and the San Juan islands with his sons and grandsons. He conquered the Red-Spoke (Redmond to Spokane, WA) at the age of 72.

Rudy was a devoted father and loving husband. He was a kind man who helped friends and family wherever he could, especially on computer problems or renovation projects. There was nothing he couldn’t build or fix for himself. He was a doting and playful grandfather with a big heart and easy smile.

Rudy joins his beloved wife, Luella, who passed away 4 years ago. Rudy is survived by his three sons and three daughters-in-law, Neil and Veronica, Richard and Judy, and Stanley and Kirsty; four grandchildren, Alexandra, Daniel, Andrew, and Sonya; as well as his brother Harry, and sister Hilda.

Shepherd, Lavonne Anne

Aug. 8, 1938 – June 2, 2022

It is with immense sorrow but gentle relief that we announce the passing of Lavonne Anne Shepherd of Raymond, Alberta. Lavonne passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on June 2, 2022, at the age of 83 years.

Left to mourn her passing are her four children, Roderick Shepherd, Darrell Shepherd, Deb Schamber, and Sharon Prasloski, her seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Lavonne is survived by her five siblings, Virginia (Albert) Zawada, Margaret (Garold) Bullock, Robert Fraser, Linda Cristofoli, and Shirley (David) Jensen, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Lavonne was predeceased by her parents, Lewis and Margaret Fraser, her brother-in-law Brian Cristofoli, and her sister-in-law Donna Fraser.

Mom was born in Lethbridge and was raised on the family farm outside of Raymond, Alberta. She spent the majority of her career working as a head cook at the Ridgeview Lodge in Raymond for 32 years where she found her passion for cooking and baking. There was never an occasion where mom didn’t have delicious meals and baked goods prepared for her family, and usually enough to feed the rest of the town too!

Mom’s hard work and dedication was exhibited in her yardwork, flowerbeds, and garden, for which she took great pride in. She always made sure to fill her flowerbeds with beautiful red and white petunias which were enjoyed by her family on her annually hosted July 1st family gatherings.

When the colder months came on, you would find mom bundled up inside working on word-search puzzles or jigsaw puzzles and watching her beloved Calgary Flames.

Mom also had a love for her four-legged furry animals and will be sadly missed by her cat, Baby. Mom always made sure there was a bowl of food and water on the front step for any cat that stopped by to visit her.

Honouring Lavonne’s wishes, there will not be a formal funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Lethbridge and District Humane Society.

TRON, Maria

Maria Tron (nee: Lasar) of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Alexander Tron passed away peacefully after a long and fulfilling life on Friday, June 3, 2022.

Maria (Mom) was born in Ukraine in 1927. One of five siblings, she had three older sisters and a younger brother. Mom and her siblings began their lives with wonder and joy on the steppes of Ukraine with parents who adored them, provided for them, and encouraged them to strive for the best. However, within a few years, they suffered through one of the greatest man-made famines in human history: The Holodomor (death by hunger in Ukrainian). Between 1932 and 1933, millions of Ukrainians died of starvation. However, due to the grit and determination of mom’s parents, she and her siblings survived the winter on one secretly buried bag of potatoes and boiled grass for soup.

Later, Mom and her family were forced to flee their beloved Ukraine home during World War II as the Russian army advanced. Her beloved father died of tuberculosis because of his help to a fallen and wounded Ukrainian soldier. They had no choice but to bury their father with honour along the roadside and continue their journey to safety. Mom along with her mother and brother eventuall immigrated to Canada to start a new life in Lethbridge.

In Lethbridge, Mom married Dad (Alexander Tron), who had also immigrated to Canada from Ukraine. Together, they gave their children a better life by making many sacrifices. Mom emphasized the importance of education to her late husband, believing that their childhood hardships in Ukraine could be overcome through education. They raised four children together, focusing on their well-being and encouraging them to pursue higher education. Their children work in medicine, law, finance, and the nonprofit sector. Mom was very proud of her children and the guidance she gave them.

Mom lived her life with joy, despite her hardships as a child. She was always grateful for her life in Canada, never taking it for granted. She had a sharp wit with a mischievous smile that made those around her laugh out loud. She had an extraordinary mind, astonishing others with how she could do complex math without using a calculator. (She also encouraged her children to do the same! Many shopping trips were delayed as one of her young children tried to figure out a percentage discount on a wanted purchase.) She was an accomplished cook and an even better baker. And her garden, both the vegetables and flowers, were the envy of her neighbours. Her green thumb was legendary; she was renowned for growing plants from a single stem or seed. She was simply one of a kind.

Mom is survived by her son Victor (Susan Braithwaite) – grandchildren, Sarah (Ken Seeback) – great- grandchildren, Max and Oliver, David and Kirsten (Neuendorff), Christopher (Paloma van Groll); son Lanny (Terry Willner) – grandchildren, Alexander, Katianna (Derek Sokol) and Marika; daughter Sonia Attkiss – grandchildren, Nicholas, Sophie, and Luke; daughter Kathy (Dave) Greenwood – grandchildren, Jack, and Tessa, brother-in-law John Tron (late Victoria Burstynsky) as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews both here and in Ukraine. She is predeceased by her late husband Alexander Tron, mother Venna Lasar, father-in-law Andrew Tron, mother-in-law Motra Tron, sister Paula Czyznski, brother Nicholas Lasar, brother-in-law Roman Czyznski and many dear family members in Ukraine.

Friends and family are invited to pay their final respects.

Prayers and service times will be announced. Please check CSGFH web-site for details.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Maria and Alexander Tron Endowed Scholarship at the University of Lethbridge .
