Butch Egeland
1948 – 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Butch Egeland announce that he said his last goodbye on Monday, September 19, 2022, surrounded by his family in Calgary at the age of 74 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 – 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, September 22, 2022 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
The Burial Service will be held at the Ibbestad Lutheran Cemetery, one kilometre east of Range Road 182 on Township Road 154, northeast of Enchant, on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 11:30 A.M.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Enchant Community Hall, 121 Center Street, Enchant on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Besides his loving wife Wendy, Butch is survived by their four precious daughters Lori (Rob) Doerksen and their family Brandi, Lane and Dakota; Tami (Cody) Plumb and their family Chase and Torynn; Lisa Egeland; Kim (Cody) Dorin and their family Ty and Emersyn. He is also survived by his siblings Taletta Dorchak, Maggie Egeland, Alma Osberg, Gordon (Carol) Egeland, Gladys Hagen and by his brother-in-law Charlie (Hazel) Woolford. He is adored by his grandpuppies and by many cherished nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents; his father-in-law Henry (Darleen) Woolford and mother-in-law Jean Woolford; brothers and sisters-in-law Carl (Gloria), Olai (Suzy), Art (Kathy) and Otto; brothers-in-law Orville Dorchak and Ray Osberg.
Butch was born in Lethbridge on January 7, 1948 to Oscar and Anna Egeland, the youngest of ten children. He grew up on the original homestead at Circle Hill where he farmed and began ditchriding. He worked for the Bow River Irrigation District and St. Mary River and Taber Irrigation Districts. He drove faster on the ditchbanks than he did on the road. Butch did not like retirement.
His love of sports started from an early age. As a kid, he played ball and skated with the neighbourhood. He played, coached and watched ball and hockey for years and became an even bigger fan when his grandkids started playing sports. Of course, the Calgary Flames was the only team to cheer for if you wanted to be a part of the family, even if you had to be bribed.
His other love was cattle and he enjoyed taking his family on bumpy rides through his cattle herd. This interest led to a second job as a custom processor at feedlots around southern Alberta for more than thirty five years. ‘Going branding’ made many special memories with his girls, sons-in-law and grandkids. He employed and influenced many young people over that period of time.
Hunting was something else Butch liked to do mostly because of the people he was with. This group has a long tradition of spending Thanksgiving together and doing the Hunters Hockey Draft which Butch actually won last year. He was looking forward to everyone being together and bragging about his win.
His biggest love were his four daughters who were all so special to him, they brought home the sons he always wanted and then came the seven grandchildren who were such fun, watching all their activities, even figure skating and playing cards. Oh the fun and giggles he had beating everyone at cards with his uncanny luck. He had a great last weekend with grandkids and playing in a crib tournament with Lori.
“Thank you Butch – dad, gpa, brother, uncle, friend, teammate, coach and boss. We love you. We miss you. We will continue the legacy you created.”
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Butch name may be made directly to HALO Air Ambulance, 12 – 1 Airport Drive SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5G4 (http://www.haloairambulance.com).

Casey Gouw Sr.
1940 – 2022
Casey Gouw Sr., beloved husband of Janet Gouw, passed away in Taber on Monday, September 19, 2022 at the age of 81 years.
Casey didn’t want harvest to be interrupted on his account and for this reason, a funeral service will be announced after harvest is finished. A private burial service will be held at the Taber Memorial Garden on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Besides his loving wife Janet, whom he shared his life with for over fifty eight years, he is survived by their four children, Casey (Tiffany) Gouw Jr. of Taber and family Taylor (Codi) Gouw (their children Grayson and Callen), Colton (Kiana) Gouw (their son Casen), Logan (Kassidy) Gouw (their son Dawson), Jayme (Mace) Perozak (their daughter Payden), Brandon Wolgen, Charlee Gouw and Ainsley Schweitzer; Kyle (Carla) Gouw of Taber and their family Lauren (Erwin) Claassen, Linden Gouw, Rachel Gouw and Cameron Gouw; Loralei (Ryan) Fujita of Taber and their family Kaden Fujita, Kole Fujita; Jolene (Billy) Wenbourne of Taber and their son Ace Wenbourne. He is also survived by his brothers Ed (Marion) Gouw, Jim Gouw, John (Weltje) Gouw and Bill (Mary) Gouw; sister Rosie (Klaas) Ten Have; brother-in-law Jake Elfring and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Arie and Bastianje Gouw; brothers Jan Gouw, Arie Gouw and his sisters Audrey Vander Hoek and Toni Prins; brothers-in-law Jerry Vander Hoek and Arnold Prins; sisters-in-law Florence Gouw, Francis Gouw, Shirley Gouw and Alma Gouw. He was also predeceased by Janet’s parents Harry and Janet Taylor and her sister Harriet Elfring.
Casey was born in Barendrecht, Holland on December 26, 1940 to Arie and Bastianje Gouw. Growing up in the Netherlands until he was nine years old, left him with some faint memories of his childhood including living through WW II. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and nine siblings, settling in Magrath in 1951. He remembered his excitement upon arriving in Canada, the vastness of the land, with so much for a young boy to explore. At a young age he already had a love for the land, which continued to grow as he set out in his desire to be a farmer and own his own land.
In 1963, Casey met Janet Mae Taylor and they married on June 26, 1964 in Fort Macleod. Together, they worked side by side raising their family and establishing the business. He had humble beginnings working with his dad and brothers growing sugar beets and grain. He also worked as a hired hand for local farmers and became “farm foreman” on a couple of farms in the Taber area before he set out on his own venture. In 1986, Gouw Quality Onions was established with sons Casey and Kyle. He worked many long hours in the designing of specialized equipment for harvesting onions, not available on the market at the time. Among many of the creations he designed was an onion lifter and onion topper. In July 1998, he was granted a United States patent for his original creation of the onion topper. Another design was an automated green onion line built for Circle Produce in Calexico, Mexico. These achievements speak to Casey’s many innovations as a pioneer in the Onion Industry.
His two greatest passions in life were family and farming and not always in that order. There was never any doubt that he loved them both.
He loved and welcomed all new additions to his family. He was very proud of his four children. His fourteen grandchildren were his pride and joy and he had a special love for his five great grandchildren.
Casey was a man of few words. Determined, stubborn, innovative, resourceful, he would never give up until the problem was solved. He had a work ethic second to none, something that he endeavored to pass on to his kids and grandkids. His long hours working didn’t allow much time for hobbies, but when opportunity arose, he enjoyed fishing.
For the past thirty years he struggled with the pain and immobility of rheumatoid arthritis and multiple other health issues as of result of this chronic disease. He met those challenges with determination, strong will and a ‘never give up’ attitude.
Casey was loved by many and had a positive and lasting impact on those who knew him. May he rest in peace.
The family are sincerely grateful for the compassionate care given by the entire healthcare team at the Taber Health Centre, the Home Care team and the staff at the Coulee Medical Clinic.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Casey’s name may be made directly to the Taber and District Health Foundation, 4326 – 50 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 1N9 (www.tdhf.ca), to the Arthritis Society, 393 University Avenue, Suite 1700, Toronto, Ontario M5G 1E6 (www.arthritis.ca) or to Diabetes Canada, Calgary and District Branch, 220, 6223 – 2 Street SE, Calgary, Alberta T2H 1J5 (www.diabetes.ca).
