BERTE
GERALYN DIANE BERTE passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Friday, September 30, 2022 at the age of 81 years.
Geralyn “Gerry” was born to Gerald and Lorraine Johnson in Lethbridge on March 28, 1941. She did most of her growing up in Taber and was raised with the help of her grandfather and grandmother, Everett and Elizabeth Stelter and her aunt Joyce Stelter (née Crumley), while her father was away at war overseas.
Her father didn’t get a chance to meet Gerry until he reunited with his family after the war. But he soon made up for lost time with her, and a few years later Geralyn was joined by her sister Trudy “Roy” and quite a few years later by her youngest sister Susan Johnson. Even though they were quite a few years apart Gerry was very close with both of her sisters and always loved spending time with each of them.
As soon as Gerry turned 18, her parents drove her down to Billings, Montana and dropped her off to go to school to become an X-Ray Technician. She had so many great experiences down there and met and made many friends, who till this day she stayed in contact with.
Upon finishing her schooling, she returned to Taber where she met the love of her life Donald Berte. They married in Taber on May 30th, 1964 and began their life together. Moving to Lethbridge, Cranbrook, Calgary and then finally back to Lethbridge.
Tracey Dawn was born on Dec 19, 1968, and their son Daniel Gerald was born on April 15th, 1975.
Geralyn worked first at the Old Lethbridge Regional Hospital and then at St. Michael’s Hospital in the X-Ray department and then moved over to the Campbell Clinic South, where she worked for many years until her retirement approx. 15 years ago. She made many friends and acquaintances over the many years at the clinic.
Gerry and Don loved to travel, and they had the opportunity to travel to Maui, Hawaii many times. They loved sitting on their balcony and watching the whales for hours at a time. They also travelled to many places including Arizona, all across the United States and down into the Eastern States, especially enjoying Maine, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania with the magnificent fall colors. They were also always camping and playing golf every chance, they could with their close friends, especially John and Gwen Edwards. But mostly they enjoyed each other’s company whatever they were doing.
Gerry fought many health issues over the past years but was always smiling and cheerful through it all. Geralyn was predeceased by her loving husband Donald Berte, parents, Gerald and Lorraine Johnson and grandparents, Everett and Elizabeth Stelter.
Left to mourn her passing are Tracey and Ronald Dumonceau, Daniel Berte and Nicole Gelderman, Ty and Kylee Gibson, Lee Gibson and Katherine Van Tol, as well as Joyce Crumley and family, Trudy and Clovis Roy and family and Susan Johnson and family.
Donations can be made in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society (cancer.ca)
A private function will be held later this month in her honor.

GRANT WILLIAM GURR
OCT. 22, 1942 – SEPT 30, 2022
Passed away “suddenly” after a very lengthy endurance of illnesses…
Grant is sadly missed by his loving wife of 16+ years … Carol Joan Henderson Patey (Gurr), with whom he shared 8 stepchildren, 29 step- grandchildren and 15 step-great grandchildren. Within a short time after “stepping” into this large family, came lasting memories and special bonding.
Grant has 2 daughters: Twyla Gurr of Lethbridge, Paige O’Byrne (Josh) of Eastend, Sask., along with her 2 children, Carter and Lexy Armstrong (Marty), also of Eastend, Sask. Grant loves them all dearly and they truly made his face “light up”.
Grant has 4 siblings: 1 sister, Harriett (Gurr) Dickson, Okotoks, Ab. 3 brothers: Phillip (Deloris) Gurr, Diamond City, Ab., Glen Gurr (deceased), Calgary, Ab., Darren Gurr, Okotoks, Ab.
Grant is predeceased by his parents, William Grant and Margueritte (Pavan) Gurr, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. His grandparents, Joseph and Maria Pavan were deeply loved and admired.
Living relatives include many Pavan/Gurr cousins, nieces and nephews.
Grant often mentioned how much he loved the life he chose. His dreams and accomplishments in Rodeo and Farming were realized.
He loved nature … the wilderness, the great outdoors … learning about remote and indigenous people, places and cultures. He was forever engulfed and emerged in books and maps with this insatiable desire. He dreamed of the Great North. With natural instinct, he voiced his love and admiration of Mountain Men. He often said he wanted to be one.
Grant’s natural desire and passion for anything “historical” was amazing … especially relating to Lethbridge and surrounding areas … being so familiar with the “River Valley” while growing up.
To all our dear friends, including our “Music Buddies” … what can we say? We love you all! A special thank you to Randy Hillman! Your music brings joy to everyone. You are a blessing … one who brightened Grant’s life more than you know.
How can Grant be described? He was like a “Storm” … a Determined Soul to be reckoned with!
Thank you to all the doctors who knew and attended to Grant for so many years. Special thanks to Dr. Aaron Coma, Dr. David Stewart and Family Medical, as well as to Dr. Lee Oviatt and Dr. Morley Wong.

RYK PRINS
1928 – 2022
Ryk Prins, of Foremost, beloved husband of Sybil Prins and father of John (Jan), Aafke, and Elaine, went home to be with the Lord on October 4, 2022, at the age of 93 years.
Ryk was born on October 23, 1928, in Rinusmageest, Netherlands. He spent his early years helping on the Prins’ family farmstead, a formative time to nurture his passion for the farming industry. To follow said passion, at the young age of 25, Ryk first came to Canada on the Dutch emigrant ship the Groote Beer, docking in Halifax, before proceeding to Saskatoon for a farming apprenticeship. Several years later, he returned to the Netherlands and met his soon-to-be wife, Sybil. It was love at first sight, and as a result, a short courtship. After a just two-week holiday with Sybil, Ryk was provided the blessing from her father to marry his daughter. Sybil followed Ryk to Canada, and they were married on Victoria Island, BC, in 1961, eventually settling in Foremost, Alberta, and buying their first farm in 1965. During his time in Foremost, Ryk was actively involved in the community and Burdett Christian Reformed Church. The Prins family moved to Lethbridge in 1996, where Ryk continued to volunteer his time and energy with the Marantha Christian Reformed Church, as well as local food banks, helping fundraise for Bibles for Missions, and being a participating member of the Lethbridge Christian Men’s Choir. A pillar of strength for his family, and a shining beacon of faith in the Lord, we will always carry his memory in our hearts.
Ryk is survived by Sybil, his wife of 61 years; children Jan Prins (Jana), Aafke (Troy) Loney, and Elaine (Bruce) Wind; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters.
