NAKAMA, Gingo

GINGO (JOE, JERGO) NAKAMA 1929 2022 It is with sad hearts that the family of JOE NAKAMA announce his passing on October 14, 2022 at Chinook Regional Hospital at the age of 92.
Dad was born in Hardieville, AB, on November 09, 1929 to Ginkichi and Mitsu Nakama. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Fudge Nakama, and three daughters, Marilyn (Mike) Langdon, Tracy (Murray) Newton and Renee (Darrel) Sparks. Two grandchildren, Janay (Dean) Harrang and Daniel (Brittany) Newton and three great grandsons, Tomi and Joe Harrang and Ezra Newton.
Dad retired from the Lethbridge Research Station after 35 years from 1953 to 1988 where he was known as “Little Joe”. He enjoyed his job and the many friends he worked with over the years. No cold or flu could keep him home, and armed with a bottle of Buckley’s he would always show up for work. Joe took his holidays in the fall for many years and headed to Taber to help his brother in-law on the farm.
After retirement Joe spent many hours fly fishing and tying flies, along with playing the guitar and singing his favourite country and western songs. He loved his coffee and would meet his friends at McDonalds while he was driving and later he could be seen walking to A&W. He was a strict dad of three girls, and all of his nieces and nephews were on their best behaviour when Uncle Jergo was around. As Dad aged he mellowed and loved the days he went to Bridges, a senior community rehab program where he would do exercises, play cards and socialize with other members. Mom and Dad were season ticket holders for the Lethbridge Hurricanes for many years and Dad looked forward to going to the games to cheer on their team.
The family will host a reception (no formal program) at Salmon and Sons Funeral Home, located at 433 Stubb Ross Road South, Lethbridge, on Friday, October 21st between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories.
