BRANDLEY, Calvin

BRANDLEY It is with sadness the family of CALVIN SELK BRANDLEY announce his passing on October 8, 2022, at Lethbridge, Alberta. Cal was born January 25, 1928, in Stirling, Alberta, the oldest child of Joseph Smith Brandley and Anna Madeline Selk Brandley. He was raised in Stirling, and had fond memories of family, farm, friends, school and sports. After High School he attended Brigham Young University and received a degree in Agricultural Economics. While at BYU Cal met and married Viola Johansen of Lethbridge. He later graduated from law school at the University of British Columbia. Cal and Vi then returned to Lethbridge and he was involved in private practice for a few years. Cal then took a position as a lawyer for the Alberta Department of Agriculture for the rest of his career. He enjoyed this work very much, and the associations it brought throughout the province. Besides his professional endeavors, he continued to run the farm at Stirling, and the ranch he acquired in the foothills south of Pincher Creek.
Cal’s family was the center of his life, and he wanted them to be involved with him whether in work or play. He was never happier than when he could go on horseback rides with family at the ranch or in the mountains. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he served in the Church in many capacities over the years. He was a kind and generous man, who was quick to help others and be sensitive to the situations of those around him. Cal was an active member and an honorary member of the Lethbridge East Rotary Club for over 60 years.
It was difficult for Cal when his wife Vi passed away in 1977, and then his son, Dallan, in 1991, but he carried on with strength and was a great support for children and grandchildren. He has resided the last few years at Extendicare Fairmont in Lethbridge, where he received quality care and support, which his family has greatly appreciated.
Cal was predeceased by his parents; wife, Viola; son, Dallan; sisters and husbands, Ireta (Scott) Wolfley, Cleo (Gary) Gardner; and brother-in-law Robert Linebarger. He is survived by his daughters: Janay (Randy) Smith and their children, Mekell (Quinn) Lybbert, and Melora (John) Rasmussen; Cheralyn (Greg) Steed and their children, Rashelle (Mark) Leishman, Jorie (Mac) Clements, Hayley (Wes) Fairbanks, and Whitney (Jay) Rainsdon. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Jadene (Terry) Huston and her and Dallan’s children, Jaylyn (Todd) Baxter, and Ryan (Michaela) Brandley; as well as a brother-in-law Frank (Ann) Johansen, and sister-in-law, Joyce Linebarger. He was extremely proud of his 8 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Cal never missed out on the opportunity to support children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved to spend time with them and shared in their activities and accomplishments.
Cal will be lovingly remembered by family and friends as an influence for good in their lives. He appreciated his extended family and cherished their support. Cal had a loyal group of friends that were always there for each other.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 22, at 11:00 AM at the FAIRMONT CHAPEL of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 205 Fairmont Blvd S, Lethbridge, Alberta. The Service will be preceded by an opportunity to meet the family at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 AM.

WIEDEMANN, Niklaus

NIKLAUS “NICK” WIEDEMANN 1951 2022 Nicklaus (Nick) Andreus Wiedemann passed away on October 12, 2022, at his home in Coaldale, Alberta.
Nick was born in Germany on October 4, 1951, and spent most of his youth in Switzerland, advancing his education in Agriculture and Agronomy at schools in Aesch and Basel, Switzerland.
Nicks life in Canada started in the mid 70’s when he came to Rosemary, Alberta through an agricultural exchange program. He worked hard, made friends easily and quickly made strong connections with people in the communities he lived and worked in and those included: Rosemary, Lathom, Gem, Bassano, Finnegan, Dorothy and more recently, Coaldale.
Nick was skilled with horses and cattle and worked on numerous farms and ranches in the area -taking the most enjoyment when his work included looking after cows. Nick was the summer grazing manager/rider at the Gem Grazing Association from 1978 – 1987 and the Rosemary Grazing Association from 1988 2001.
Nick’s focus changed dramatically when he met and married Avidania “Benly” Deato. Their lives changed forever when their daughter Alice was born in 2010 and Alice has been the light of his life every day since then. Nick has been actively involved in the life of his family and caring for the details of life and education for Alice were among his highest priorities. This included meeting extended family on trips to Switzerland, Spain, and Philippines. Nick took special pleasure in seeing Alice involved in riding lessons even though his recent health challenges prevented him from being as involved as he wanted to be.
Nick was predeceased by his father Maximillan; mother Hanna; brothers Lutz and Hans; sister Alice Blatter and father-in-law Benjamin Deato.
Nick is survived by his loving wife Benly and beautiful daughter Alice; sister Antonette (Daniel) Graub; sister-in-law Martha Wiedemann; brother-in-law Roland Blatter; mother-in-law Lilla Deato; sister-in-law Mingly Deato and niece Nicole Deato
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 21, 2022, at COALDALE MENNONITE BRETHREN CHURCH, 2114 – 18 Street, Coaldale, Alberta with Pastor Gary Burke, officiating. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects 1 hour prior to the service at the Coaldale Mennonite Brethren Church. GAIL SUNDSTROM 1946 2022 Gone Fishing Gail Sundstrom of Lethbridge, passed away at Pemmican Lodge on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at the age of 76 years. She is survived by her loving son Mike (Amber) Hewitt and grandsons Parker and Ashton Hewitt all of Calgary, as well as her sister Gloria (Craig) Miller of Pender Island, BC.

DUMONT, Camelia

CAMELIA DUMONT 1949 2022 Camelia Dumont of Lethbridge passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Chinook Regional Hospital on October 14th, 2022 at the age of 73 years.
Camelia is survived by her two sons, Daniel Healy Jr., and Steven (Divine) Healy Sr.; her grandchildren, Steven Healy Jr., Salena (Colbey) Healy, Dakota Wadsworth, Jeremy Oka, and Patrick Oka; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, relatives, and close friends.
Camelia was predeceased by her parents, George Dumont and Verna Roberton; her son Anthony Healy; her siblings, David Dumont, Avis Maxwell, and Laurenza Dumont; her niece Louellyn Dumont, and nephew Blaze Cardinal.
Camelia was born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, on January 28th 1949, to George Dumont and Verna Roberton. She grew up in Fort Macleod and graduated high school at F.P. Walshe. Camelia continued her education at the University of Lethbridge where she acquired her B.Ed. She furthered her education at the University of Oregon and received her M.Ed. She continued with PhD studies in California.
Having spent over 30 years as an educator, Camelia had an impressive resume. She was a teacher at St. Mary’s School, until she moved on to teach at the Lethbridge College. She also worked within the Willow Creek School Division at G.R. Davis and F.P. Walshe. Camelia finished her career as an educator at the University of Lethbridge within the Faculty of Education.
Camelia was heavily involved within the community. She was part of the Lifelong Learning Association, Aboriginal Council, Native Women’s Transition Home, and an advisor to Opokaa’sin Early Intervention Society. These are only a few of her involvements; she also volunteered extensively for multiple organizations in Lethbridge.
Within retirement, Camelia mostly enjoyed playing bingo, watching her favourite sports teams, and of course keeping up with her astrology.
Camelia touched many hearts and will be missed dearly by her family, friends, and the community.

DEAN PAISLEY 1945 2022 Dean Paisley of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Patricia Paisley, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a short battle with cancer on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at the age of 77 years.
Dean is survived by his wife Patricia nee Fawcett; daughter Deana (Kirby) Nishikawa of Calgary; son Doug (Tami) Paisley of Lethbridge; brother Dale Paisley of Regina, Saskatchewan; grandchildren Kimiko Nishikawa, Takara Nishikawa, Logan Paisley, Brooklyn Paisley.

MERTZ, Gary

MERTZ GARY KEITH MERTZ, beloved husband of Bev (Heggie) Mertz passed away peacefully in Raymond Hospital on October 15, 2022 at the age of 75 years. Gary is the loving father of Gerald (Helen), Todd (Rochelle), and David. He is also a grandfather of 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to Bev and his family, he is survived by his brother Ken (Dianne) and sisters Della and Linda (Larry). He was predeceased by his parents William and Rosina, brothers Leonard and Dennis, and sisters Lorna, Marlene and Jeanine.
Gary was born on February 2, 1947 in Lethbridge to William and Rosina Mertz. He was the seventh of their nine children. He grew up as a farm kid in Stirling, and later raised his family there. He met his beautiful bride, Bev Heggie and they were married in 1966, spending 56 years together. He worked hard on his farm, to support his family. He also spent over 40 years as a Ford partsman in Calgary, Lethbridge, Raymond and Cranbrook. In 1992, Gary had the opportunity to purchase a ranch in B.C. with his wife Bev, and they spent the next 25 years living their dream. This is where his family was able to develop some of their fondest memories of grandpa and grandma. He loved being in the mountains and caring for his livestock. During their years ranching they were adopted into the close-knit community of Jaffray, B.C. and loved the people there. In 2017, Gary and Bev decided it was time to retire and moved back to southern Alberta to settle in Coaldale. Gary was a man of few words but loved to visit with people. However, at church and other events, he was most comfortable sitting on the back row. He served his Church in any way he felt he could; including serving with Bev at the Cardston Temple.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to the caring staff at the Raymond Hospital, Coaldale Homecare, Foothills Hospital, and Dr. C. Nelson and Dr. W. Walters.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 2216 – 21a Ave, COALDALE, AB on Friday, October 21, 2022 at 11:00 am.
Friends may meet the family prior to the Service from 10:00 to 10:45 am or on Thursday, October 20, 2022, also at the Coaldale Chapel, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. For those wishing to participate at home, a link will be provided on the Salmon and Sons website.
