By Lethbridge Herald Obituaries on March 9, 2023.

SASSE, Joyce

Joyce Marlene Sasse May 21, 1940 – February 28, 2023 Joyce grew up in Milk River, Alberta and was active in the United Church of Canada from a young age. Summers were spent at Canyon Church Camp in Waterton where she started to develop her leadership skills. From a young age Joyce knew she wanted to be a United Church Minister.
As a young adult she first studied in Lethbridge at the Junior College. While there she realized her passion for writing. She began writing editorial columns for the Lethbridge Herald and went on to write many columns and articles, books and plays.
Joyce continued her studies at St. Andrew’s Theological College and ultimately achieved her Master of Divinity. She was the only woman to graduate in the class of 1965 and only the second woman to graduate from the college at that time.
After graduation she went to South Korea for 4 years as a missionary, teaching English and working with the YWCA. This experience left her with strong impressions and many stories to tell.
On returning to Canada, Joyce became director of the YWCA in Saskatoon. She went on to be the “Saddlebag Rural Minister” for two Southern Saskatchewan ministries. She returned to Alberta to be closer to her aging mother and found herself in Rockyford with a large rural ministry. She served as Pincher Creek United Church Pastoral Charge minister from 1989 to 1996.
Joyce retired in 1996, continuing to pursue her, “get on with life”, interests. She wrote spiritual columns for the Pincher Creek Echo, the Western Producer, and the Fort Macleod Gazette. She published four books on her rural ministry work. She wrote and produced three plays about the life and times of Kootenai Brown, Father LaCombe and Anora Brown. Her plays shone a spotlight on the legacy of these individuals who advanced the rural development of Southwestern Alberta. In recent years she worked to bring Anora Brown’s artwork back to the attention of Canadians.
In 2021 Joyce was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the St. Andrew’s Theological College.
Joyce Sasse passed away peacefully in Pincher Creek. She is survived by her sister Gloria Dyrdra, cousins Bev (Ken) McCoy and Noreen (Michael) Blackmer, and nephews Steven Sasse and Michael Sasse.
A celebration of life will be held at the Pincher Creek United Church, 972 Police Avenue, Pincher Creek, AB T0K 1W0 on March 16, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.

ALEMAN, John

JOHN ALEMAN 1950 – 2023 Mr. John Aleman of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Bea Aleman, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at the age of 72 years.
John Aleman was born as the tenth child of Teunis and Cornelia Aleman in Ouddorp, The Netherlands on November 28, 1950. Following the devastating Flood of ’53, the family immigrated to the Picture Butte area. John attended Barrhill School, followed by Picture Butte High School. He then went on to SAIT for a Power Engineering Technician diploma. After a short stint at Swift’s Meat Packing Plant, he spent 39 years in the oil and gas sector, mostly at the Turin Gas Plant.
John married Bea in 1973, and in August they would have been married for 50 years. They were blessed with seven children. Although he worked full-time, he found time to start Busy Bea’s Market Garden. This allowed the family to work together and learn many transferrable skills while trying to match his work ethic.
John’s retirement from the energy sector lasted only a few months. He took up part-time work with Canada Post as a mail carrier in Coalhurst and Diamond City, which he valued for the social contact it offered. He and Bea also enjoyed travelling on shorter and longer trips in their motorhome.
John had cancer for which he was being treated. But, at the Lord’s time and in His way, it was a combination of pneumonia and heart problems which took John’s life sooner than we expected. The family would like to acknowledge the medical and emergency professionals who helped John so much in the past months at the Jack Ady Cancer Centre, especially Dr. Talib and nurse Diane, as well as the Coalhurst Fire Department and Lethbridge EMS who responded so often. Special thanks also to those who dealt with dad during his last brief hospital stay, from his admission in ER, to his code on 4C, to his passing in ICU.
John loved and was loved by his 7 children, Trevor & Cindy, Brent & Louise, Eric & Willene, Jorica & Joe, Michael & Cindy, Colleen, and Bruce & Leanna, and his 23 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by six siblings and is survived by three siblings.
Condolences will be held from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 10, 2023 only for friends, family, and past and present colleagues in the meeting room of the Lethbridge Netherlands Reformed Congregation, located at 48-90022, Rge Rd 211, Lethbridge County.
The Funeral Service is scheduled the Lord willing in the same church on Saturday, March 11 at 10:30 with Rev. A.H. Verhoef officiating.
The family requests those attending Condolences and the Funeral Service to avoid wearing scents. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvin Christian School, Box 26, Coalhurst, AB, T0L 0V0.

MUHLY, Adam

ADAM ROBERT MUHLY 1985 – 2023 It comes with great sadness to announce the passing of Adam Robert Muhly on March 3, 2023, at the age of 37. Adam passed away peacefully due to heart disease, surrounded by the comforts of home.
Left to find solace in the memories are his mom and greatest supporter, Mary-Lynn Muhly and dad, Bob Muhly. Adam will also be remembered by 3 children who were a huge part of his life, Travis Green, Tyler (Caitlyn) Green, Courtney (Brent) Hasper; step-grandchildren Sophie Green and Adeline Hasper; uncle Bryon and aunt Linda Muhly; buddy Draydin Davies as well as his cousins and friends in the community.
He was predeceased by his grandparents Addie and Charlie Perdue & Mel and Jean Muhly; aunt Jean (Dave) Lapointe and uncle Ken Perdue.
As a child, Adam went on many adventures with his grandpa and best friend, Charlie. Tending to the cows, tinkering with machines, daily coffee outings and driving 30km/hr always fulfilled their days. Adam’s ability to spend great lengths of time to fix something without using shortcuts was developed during these formative years. Charlie’s passing was a difficult moment in Adam’s life.
His skills and contributions were evident when he became involved with Lethbridge’s local theatre scene. He found his niche with set production and fine-tuning lighting and sound. Adam introduced his passion to his mom who continues to contribute her time to many productions.
Adam lived his best life on a bike or quad while exploring trails in the coulees or on a mountain. One could guarantee, he was probably wearing his favorite color, orange and had a slurpee near by. Finding solace in the outdoors was Adam’s desire, he often spoke of owning and farming a piece of land.
Those that knew Adam observed how he wanted those around him to succeed. His generosity with his time, knowledge and resources where reflective of this desire. When he struggled to see his own value those closest to him saw that he needed to be generous and forgiving to himself.
Rest now Adam knowing that your mom will have the support needed to guide her through this difficult time. She will continue to honor you with her ongoing commitment to community theatre.
To honor Adam, a private gathering will be held for those who were privileged to have spent time with him.

JACKSON, Elizabeth “Betty”

JACKSON It is with a heavy heart that the family of ELIZABETH “BETTY” ANN JACKSON announce her passing on Monday March 6, 2023, at the St Michael’s Health Centre, at the age of 100 years.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Carol (Wayne) Neilson, Michael (Tammy) Jackson, Julie (Gary) Pike, David (Tamara) Jackson, Bev (Alan Gajdostic) Jackson as well as grandchildren, great- grandchildren and extended family members.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, husband, two sisters and two brothers-in-law.
Betty was born December 10, 1922, in Regina Saskatchewan, the second of three daughters to Oliver and Merle Bright. The family lived in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan during Betty’s early years and then returned to Regina.
In 1942 Betty met and fell in love with Victor Sydney Jackson, an RAF Spitfire pilot from the Fiji Islands. They married December 31, 1943 and Victor was sent to England to train other pilots. After WWII ended Vic returned to Fiji from England and Betty set off on the adventure of a lifetime. Having never been away from home, she bravely journeyed alone to Fiji where she joined husband Vic. Together they raised 5 children, Carol, Michael, Julie, David and Beverley. In 1961 the family emigrated to Lethbridge, Alberta and reunited with Betty’s family. They continued to live in and around the Lethbridge area, but their happiest years were those spent on their acreages at Kipp and Diamond City.
Betty will be remembered by her family and friends as a dedicated mother and a kind, compassionate and loving person. Nothing made her happier than visitors or family popping in for a cup of tea, cookie and a chat. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, nature and had a deep love for animals.
Her family wish to acknowledge the special friendships Betty formed during the years she lived in Nobleford. She treasured each and every relationship and was forever grateful to the incredible kindness extended to her. Many happy times were shared over countless cups of tea and cookies and Betty felt like she was part of a big family.
A heartfelt thank you is also extended to the residents, staff and management of Pemmican Lodge for the love and care she received in the latter years of her life that she spent there.
Betty’s family would also like to thank the Doctors and nursing staff at the Chinook Regional Hospital and St Michael’s Health Centre for their excellent care and compassion. Their dedication and comforting words made this journey easier to bear for the family.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers and in memory of Betty to an animal rescue or an animal shelter organization.
